Tom, if I ever make my way over to St. Louis, i'll give it a try but honestly, I want some St. Louis Ribs!! :D
If you come to St. Louis, you have to try the Italian food on "the Hill," too (The "Hill" is the original Italian neighborhood). St. Louis has great ribs, too. But if you are ever heading to Memphis, let me know and I'll direct you to the best ribs restaurant in the world!

From Louie Burke: Update on Abie Han

During the last 3 weeks, Abie Han has been in preparation for his fight July 30th at Softball Country Arena in Denver, Colorado against 3-3-1 Justin Williams from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Abie who’s been sparring with Austin Trout and Siju Shabazz, isn’t taking Williams lightly. As was Abie’s last opponent, Taronze Washington, Williams record is deceiving mainly, mainly due to him coming off a stunning 3rd round KO win over 10-1 Jovan Munoz. Williams 3 losses are from opponents that have a combined record of 15-1-1, all by decision. Williams wins are over opponents that have a combined record of 18-5-2 and having a draw with a 6-0 Rudolph Gomez Jr. !

Abie is anxious to get back into the Ring, after having a slightly longer time between fights than he’d like due to a cut suffered in his last fight. Abie is wanting to get back on the KO track again on July 30th!

The fight is being promoted by Top Rank Promotions and being televised on FOX Sports Network.

This is a great site. I'm having a little trouble with the Trout broadcast, interference of some sort.

Hey Tom, I didnt know you were in St Louis. I thought you were still in Okla. but I'm know sometimes I'm a day late and a dollar short.

From 1982-1985 I worked a short stint as a merchandising supv for an Anheuser Busch franchise here on Long Island. The company sent me to St Louis for some marketing classes for about 3 weekdays and I stayed the weekend. My partner rolled up sick and so I did the trip myself.

Back then, I got caught up with some local Anh-Busch employees and went out on the town at night. At that time, St Louie had a waterfront entertainment area loaded with Rests and bars. We hit the old Spaghetti Factory and some Blues clubs after.
Its my understanding that whole area was washed away from Mississippi Rv. flooding out St Louie a few yrs back. Do they still have the McDonalds Riverboat barge.?
There was another barge next to it on the river serving up fish. Had fried catfish that was out of this world there.

One night we went to a rest. owned by a famous baseball umpire up in town closer to downtown.I forgot the name of the umpire, but his Rest might still be there.
Of course went up in the arch via the sideway elevator. Cool stuff
Was going to venture over to East St Louis, Ill to check out the hood, but they told me that they wouldnt even find my wallet afterwards-I would disappear-poof in thin air. I laughed and didnt go.

Capped off the weekend at a Chicago Bears-St Louis Cardinals football game. Tix courtesy of Anh-Busch on the field. Walter Payton ran in 3 TDs over Cards QB Steve Lomax 2 TD passes. Great day. Bypassed the well known National Bowling HOF next door though .

I was shown Stan Musials Bowling Center though or was it Yogi Berra's. I forgot now.
That was 30 years ago-Hopefully some of that stuff still exists.

Rios vs. Antillon: In the Phone Booth
By Ted Sares:

This guy is never in a dull fight.
Anonymous

The excitement was palpable as both fighters entered the ring at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Chants of “Antillon, Antillon, Antillon” were louder than “Rios, Rios, Rios,” but that would be the extent of any domination by the Mexican native.. The opposing bands also faced off, but Bam Bam’s was larger and clearly better. Adding to the overall atmosphere, Antonio Margarito walked in with Rios and was cheering him on throughout. Before the introductions, a serious looking Bam Bam, wearing leopard skin trunks, paced back and forth like a caged cat.

The fans expected a toe-to-toe battle and that’s what they got—an unmitigated one similar to what Gatti-Ward had to offer, but this one didn’t last very long. After two rounds of back and forth, head snapping action that included an obvious disregard for defense but great offense including some subtle stuff as well as hooks, straights and especially brutal uppercuts, it was clear the fight would not go the distance. It was also clear Rios was becoming owner of the phone booth. The first round was particularly compelling, though Rios won it and then he asserted himself in round two.

Going into the third, Rios was simply younger and stronger and his punches were more punishing to which as Urbano’s battered and bloody face attested.

In the third, Bam Bam finally wore down Urbano, rocked him, and then floored him with a right to the side. After more back and forth, Rios floored Urbano again with a vicious right. With seconds remaining, it appeared Urbano would survive the round but when he staggered backwards still suffering the effects of the second knockdown, the referee wisely halted the action as Rios moved in for the kill.

Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (28-0-1) had stopped Urbano Antillon (28-3) in a fight that featured fan friendly non-stop action that just might help us forget last Saturday night. It also propels Rios as one of the most exciting and, therefore, compelling fighters in boxing today.

In other action on the card:

Matt Korobov UD 8 Lester Gonzalez
Paul Fleming KO 1 Juan Jose Beltran
Gabino Saenz KO 3 Quincy Wesby
Carlos Molina UD 10 Kermit Cintron
Mercito Gesta KO 3 Jorge Pimentel
Jose Roman KO 1 Randy Arrellin
Mike Lee KO 3 Michael Birthmark

Frank, I found this piece on Enrique Bolanos,
Enrique Bolanos does something that our other local lightweights do not do-he stops most of his imported opponents. He isn't a terrific puncher, but he does hit solidly and possesses the fighting spirit to finish a foe, once he has him hurt. Lulu Costantino was the fiery Mexican's latest K.0. victim. And it was the first time in his career that Lulu didn't go the distance. It happened in the 7th round at the Los Angeles Olympic before a sellout crowd of 10,400.
Costantino is still a clever defensive boxer and a cutie in all departments of the game, but these smoothies never have bothered Bolanos too much. The New Yorker was the artful dodger at times, and he scored a few points in occasional spurts, but most of the time he was bicycling to escape punishment. A hard one-two early in the 7th put Costantino flat on his back. He arose at the count of 7 in a dazed condition and backed into the ropes, with hands dangling at his sides. Enrique sprang in for the kill, rocked the Italian with a left and right before referee Johnny Indrisano could move in to stop it. Each weighed 134..

We moved to St. Louis from Oklahoma in 1986 when I went to work for a large international non-profit organization.

A lot has changed. Of course, the St Louis Football Cardinals are gone (but we have the Rams). So are most of the riverboats you visited, and so is the bowling hall of fame. Most regrettably, AB is no longer AB; it's InBev (although its still called AB in St. Louis). The old AB did a lot for the community - not so much the new AB.

On the other hand, the riverfront wasn't washed out by the flood; in fact, it expanded and is thriving. (Although its been hit somewhat recently by the economic downturn.) The restaurant you mentioned is Mike Shannon's. He is a Cardinals broadcaster and former Cardinal baseball player. But his restaurant has been relocated from where it was when you visited. And you still don't want to venture over into East St. Louis.

The invitation to show any of the West Coast guys around is also extended to you!

Speaking of St. Louis . . .

I'll never forget my visit to Dodger Stadium in 1963.
The Dodgers were playing the St. Louis Cards.
I was happy to see quite a few legends play in that game.
Koufax pitched for the Dodgers, and Stan Musiel was in the outfield for the cards.

Interesting that AB is no longer. In the 60's AB had plant in the San Fernando Valley known as Busch Gardens, where they would brew Budweiser, Bud Lite, Michelobe, and Busch Bavarian Beer. When they opened they gave tours thru the brewery, which was quite big. You could ride in trams that would take you thru the plant, and there was a tasting area. I think the tours & tourist attraction ended in the 70's. I don't know what it's called today, I know they still brew Bud there, but it's all different.
