Ricky thank you if I am not mistaken you also fought on the undercard of a ken norton fight. I started watching boxing from the olympic in 1964. mando ramos and a few others were just comming on.Being only thirteen at the time I was a bug on boxing I bought all the magazines. they showed them on friday nights. As for boxing writers I can not think of one name toay I would seriously reed. as for tv color guys save me from larry meerchant and whos the guy who looks like a crack head and annoys the hell out ofme lol

I know who your talking about, Max Kellerman, he annoys me too.

The jack-ass came from rock music, and had an opinion about boxing.

Ricky sometimes I turn off the sound I do not need teddy atlas or those guys explaining to me like a second grader what i am seeing drives me nuts. now the guys on boxeo tecate and others i like those guys they do not pull punchs. they call it like it is.....
Mel Epstein couldn't stand Howard Cosell. He'd turn off the Tv when Howard was on, preferring silence to Cosell's irritating voice & thoughts.

I was there for the Aragon/Davis fight. It was not a great fight to watch because of Davis, he'd not want to fight that nite, he just wanted to finish on his feet.
Thanks Frank, I remember you saying you were there, Frank did they film many of Art's fights?. I'd love to get hold of some old newsreel footage of the Golden Boy, I bet there is loads of old footage just gathering dust in some vault in L.A.
I've some of his fights on DVDs....You might find some on Youtube. There might be some on the Baltazabrothers channel.
Frank, I see that Art fought a few times on local T.V. in Los Angeles, do you know what channel that was?. One with Johnny McCray May. 5, 1955 another with Alfonso Flores May. 24, 1958 at the Hollywood Legion. Frank I've seen the footage on Youtube, the Baltazarbrothers channel excellent footage, thanks again buddy..

What channel??, no, I wouldn't remember that. We didn't have many channels then, but it has be one of the these, 5-9-ll or 13...Channel 2 (CBS), 4 (NBC) and 7 (ABC) never carried the local fights....

Tom . . . Faye Dunaway won't be able to be your partner on "Dancing with the Stars".
I read the actress is being evicted from her small, $1000. a month, one bedroom apartment in New York.
The nasty old broad has fallen on hard times.

Frank,Is there a possibility of Frank Jr and Tony coming to the CBHOF in June ?
My brother in-law and myself were huge fans of theirs and watched them on TV many times.(Along with 1,000's other boxing fans)
It would be an honor to meet them.
Frankie will Charlie; as he lives here in SoCal, actually he lives across the street from me, Tony? don't know, as he lives in Arizona and he has a hard time getting time off from the job. He was planning on coming over this past June and couldn't get off. I'm sure that if he can worked it out he'll be here....

That would be great, Frank. I will keep my fingers crossed.Thanks.
I know Tony fought here (New York), upstate NY to be exact. I remember he had McGirt down once or twice too.Tony was a fantastic puncher for his weight. A true ring talent who gave everyone a thrill who watched him.I am surprised they didnt fight in the city, but rather upstate. McGirt & Tony were Main Event guys. Do you know why it wasnt in the Garden.? Sure had the billing for it.
McGirt fought here out of Long Island in the beginning of his career (my father reffed some of his early fights).Tough kid. An old New Jersey guy had him-Al Certo. Al and my dad knew each other well since Al was in New Jersey. He had a tailor shop for decades near Bayonne. I think someone just mentioned he sold it recently.
I noticed that Tony didnt fair too well here on the East Coast, But he held his own against tough guys like McGirt & Howard Davis. Davis was another Long Island kid who faired well. He now lives in Florida and runs a gym there. Howard Davis Sr was in the boxing game many years but he been gone awhile now. We dont see much of Howard Davis around much anymore, but McGirt comes to the Ring 8 luncheons every Dec. Nice guy, who will sit and talk for awhile. His son was involved in Boxing now.
It will be a honor to get out to the West Coast and meet everyone there.
Charlie, Tony had 3 big fights on the East Coast. Imo he lost only one and got robbed in 2 of them. Even though he had Buddy McGirt down in the 2th round; he lost fair and square to Buddy in up state N.Y. He fought Howard Davis in Atlantic City, he had Davis down in the 5th round and again in the 8th round, I thought he won the fight 6-4 in the round system and big time in the point system. He fought Rodney Moore in Philly, he had Moore down 3 times in the 1th round, the 3 knockdown rule was in play, Tony should had won by 1th round ko, but on the 3th knockdown the ref picked Moore up and called it a slip right as the bell rang to end the 1th round. Moore was able to last the distance but he didn't win that fight. We founded out that that old adage "A top West Coast fighter can not beat a top East Coast fighter in his home town unless you knock him out" is true.
Why wasn't the McGirt fight at the Garden?. Don't know, the fight was a MSG Production though...

I don't know about her drinking habits, but the white powder kicked her to the curb.
She was a star, an A-list Academy Award winner.

I was there & saw it! As I have said many times before, he was my parents favorite Jr. Glover.
They would always talk of his knocking kids down, and he was just a peanut.
There are photos already posted here that validate this.
Sometimes little kids will fall from a punch but it's often more a push or slip. Tony would crack one off their chin and they'd go down hard.

Thanks Frank for telling it the way it is. I saw many times judges robbing boxers of a match that they won, especially very close ones. The hometown guy will get the call 99% of the time.
As far as a ref picking a guy up off the canvas and not crediting the other boxer with a knockdown is just plain fraud. I seen some managers lodge protests with the various athletic commissions, but it usually falls on deaf ears unless its a public outcry and seen by many (TV).
In other words, if a hometown guy git the schrift-the protest will be heard.
Politics sucks, such as we discussed with Mexican judges.
My father did explain to me many times over that a opponent has to outright beat a champion in a championship bout to win the title. Hence close decisions will normally go the champs way, wherever he fights. But that was back in the olden days with fewer championships were being fought, not like today, where every TV fight I watch seems to have 3 or 4 belts on the line

.
Its bad enough the way it is, but in Philly-doesnt surprise me !!

So I took maxy to stockton complaining he was all the time. I have heard stories form fighters but this guy had them all. I never hve enough money. My kids are starving you guys take too much. Well I did not take a dime off him. Lo and behold he wins. Now he wins which was a miracle in stockton anyway. On the way back complining not enough money you guys are crooks. I was so happy just to get pro experience. Then he was matched with tony. I told his manager he was crazy Tony was dynamite a real comer with a great amateur background. the rest is ring history.... A good way for a beginning second to cut his teeth. Lucky for me i was not in sacramento that night lol. I was telling ricky when certain fighters comes along an id hear his name i get heat. your son tony had it in spades.
