R.I.P. Allen Syers

I received the sad news that ex-boxer Allen Syers has passed away after a long fight with cancer.

Allen was born in Liverpool, England. Before coming to America Allen had a fine amateur career in the U.K. Allen came to California in the early 1960’s to start his pro career. After a few wins he fought a young Mando Ramos before a sellout crowd at the Olympic Auditorium, Allen put up a game battle but was stopped by Ramos in five rounds.

After a few more bouts, Allen was force to retire because of a serious hand injury.

In later years Allen stayed busy training young kids to box. Allen was one of the truly fine men in boxing, one of the nicest cat you could hope to meet.

Allen Syers was inducted into the California Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2008.

Allen Syers family will accept the Don Fraser Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award on behave of Allen at the Golden State Boxer's Association annual holiday luncheon and awards ceremony to be held at Steven's Steakhouse on December 10, 2011.

It's great to get the inside on So. Cal. boxing history. I've been reading on this blog for about 2 years, and briefly posted on it in the past. I miss Rick Farris' comments and insights. I would value any information about Fidel Fraijo, Eddie "Motorboat" Logan, and Victor Abraham. As a kid, I would follow these obscure fighters after watching them on UHF channel broadcasted from the Olympic Auditorium. Jim Healy was the at the mike. Fidel Fraijo was actually from Cloverdale in Northern Cal. I'm from the Bay Area and would pass through Cloverdale. Fraijo always looked capable and smooth. Eddie Logan was unpredictable but beat Superfly Sandoval and Alfonso Zamora. He was going to get a shot against Pintor, but a brain scan revealed problems. Abraham beat fighters like Rudy Barro, and he looked pretty good against Milton McCrory in the early 80's. These 3 fighters might not have been well-known, but I thought they could have gone further.

Does anybody know details of Rudy Robles' challenge to Rodrigo Valdez's middleweight title in the mid-1970's? I know that Robles was a crafty, tough, and capable pro. When his career was on the downside, he still knocked out Mike Colbert and went 10 rounds with Alan Minter in London. Of course, Valdez was great, second only to Monzon.

As I recall, Rudy Robles lost to Rodrigo Valdez in a close bout on the latter's home turf, which was the best moment of Robles' career. Afterwards, Robles went downhill rapidly and fought far beyond his "sell-by" date as an opponent in Jimmy Montoya's very active stable of stiffs, who often were cannon fodder for top fighters and prospects in numerous mismatches. In fairness to Robles, he usually provided much better opposition than almost all of the fighters in Montoya's stable, even when he was far past his prime.

I'm really happy that Peterson beat Khan. Peterson strikes me as a very steady fighter, not flashy but well-schooled. Not surprisingly, Khan and company are disputing the decision and referee's actions.

Rogelio Castaneda Jr., local fighter from my area (Sacramento), was stopped by Peterson a few years back. Despite being past his prime, he put forth a game effort. It's on youtube. Rogelio has fought many other tough fighters including Oscar Diaz, Miguel Figueroa, Jose Santa Cruz, Ernesto Zepeda, Craig Weber, Demetrius Hopkins, Pancho Bojado, etc.

It looked as though Khan had been progressing greatly under Freddie Roach.

I love upsets.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. reportedly to accept plea bargain

A Las Vegas newspaper says the boxer will plead guilty to misdemeanor counts in an incident involving a girlfriend.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. will reportedly accept a plea bargain to avoid a felony conviction in connection with a domestic violence case involving the mother of three of his children, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday.

Calls to Mayweather and his representatives were not returned.

Clark County (Nev.) District Attorney David Roger told the newspaper that Mayweather on Wednesday will plead guilty to one count of battery domestic violence and two counts of harassment, all misdemeanors. Mayweather is subject to $3,000 in fines and a jail sentence ranging from two days to 18 months, the newspaper reported.

Mayweather, 34, originally faced felony charges for his alleged attack against girlfriend Josie Harris and his treatment of the children after reportedly learning Harris was dating another man in September 2010.

The conclusion of Mayweather's criminal case helps promoters move forward with plans to stage a super-fight next year between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, told The Times that Mayweather's legal case has created uncertainty because of a possible trial date and how much jail time he could serve if convicted. Arum still cautioned, "I have no idea what's going to happen. We'll see tomorrow. So let's wait until tomorrow."

Arum said a likely date for the mega-fight between the sport's top two fighters would be in June. Arum said he's pursuing the idea of building a 45,000-seat venue on the Las Vegas Strip near the Wynn and Venetian properties. Arum said the additional time will assist the construction plan, even though Mayweather's advisor previously said he's cleared May 5 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas for a fight date against Pacquiao.

"That's Cinco de Mayo and too early," said Arum of the May 5 date; he added that fight talks won't take place during the holiday break.

Things have slowed down considerably here on this thread. I've been a little overwhelmed and distracted by other things too that have kept me from posting the way I usually do. I miss the way things used to be here. I'm optimistic though and here's hoping for a revitalized Classic American West Coast Boxing in the New year!
