San Jose Tony Chavez comes to Hollywood Legion Stadium proceded by a sizeable reputation as a durable little fisticuffer. He has faced some highly explosive punchers in past bouts and as yet has never been counted out in ring combat. That could be, perhaps, the reason why he's shown no great awe for the pulverizing power of Art Aragon, that is why he his in a position to spring the upset of the year here tonight. Local fight men agree there aren't many lightweights in captivity capable of whipping the "Golden Boy"; In the same breath they'll tell you Art has got himself no softie for an opponent tonight. And when men in boxing think enough of a fight to take on the interest typical of the fight fan it's almost a sure indication that a sizzling battle is expected. Because of a series of circumstances, Art Aragon hs been forced to literally smash his way to the top of the lightweight heap. He's had trouble getting the top fighters in the nation to face him. He has but one alternative in such case and that is to prove, by comparative performances, that he his without doubt the outstanding 135 pounder on the Pacific slope. He has the punching power to put his point over; And you can believe that he has the will to use that punching power. He has already knocked out 21 of his 42 foes; Tony Chavez is bound to change those figures one way or another.
Frank, The Cucuy, the "Mexican Boogeyman"...kikibalt wrote:"Car Problems and The Cucuy"
By Frank "kiki" Baltazar
I think the Cucuy has being hanging around our house lately. Why else what happened at the beginning of the week with our cars happened? If it was not for the Cucuy, then what was it?
Sunday I drove Connie’s car to the local 76 to fill it up, after filling it up I drove it back home, park it in front of our house. Next morning Connie jumped in the car to go to work, after kissing me good bye she hit the key and the car wouldn’t start, after trying to start it couple more times and it not firing up I told her to forget it and to take my truck, she did.
After having breakfast I called my son-in-law, Ray, who is a certified auto mechanic. Lucky for me that Ray has Monday’s off, later that morning Ray came and checked the car out, but he couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t start, Ray told me that he needed the car towed to his house so that he could hook the scanner to it. Ray has his garage set-up like a mini auto shop. I called AAA to pick the car up, told them where to take it to, they did.
Monday evening after Connie got home I drove my truck to the 76 and filled it up, I then drove it back home. Tuesday I needed to go to CVS to pick up some drugs and I needed to do it before Connie went to work since I was going to be without wheels for the day. While Connie was in the shower I put a jacket over my pj’s and walked out, jumped in my truck, hit the key and the truck wouldn’t start, same thing as Connie’s car, the engine would turn but it wouldn’t fire up. I walked back inside the house to give Connie the bad news, that being that it looked like she had to spent all day with me, she doesn’t like that, I wonder why? I think I am a nice enough dude…LOL!! I asked Connie if she wanted me to rent her a car so she could go to work, she told me to wait, that she was going to stay home. She called work and told a girl what was going on with the cars. She then fixed breakfast for us, after breakfast she told me to go ahead and rent her a car so she could go to work Wednesday, and I did so.
I called Ray again, he said he would stop by on his way to work, which he did, after checking the truck out he said that it seem to be a fuel problem, that he would come back after he got out of work and see if he could fix it. That evening Ray came back and he couldn’t get the truck to fire up. I then told Ray to fix Connie’s car first and that we would worry about my truck later. Late Tuesday evening Ray called to tell us he had Connie’s car running, he said that for some reason or other the fuel injectors stay opened and it flooded the engine, one down, one to go.
Wednesday morning Connie went to work and I after being up with Connie went back to bed. After Facebooking while lying in bed I got up and burned me some breakfast. After cleaning up the mess I made in the kitchen I walked outside, looked at my truck and after cussing it out I jumped in it hit the key and damn if the truck didn’t fired right up!
I don’t believe in the Cucuy, but just maybe? Did my cussing scared the Cucuy away, just maybe!

Art was couple of months short of being 21 years old at the time of this fight. I think his best years were between 1950 and '55.Cholo wrote:Art "Golden Boy" Aragon/Richie Shinn...Sept,20.1948
SAN FRANCISCO-Matchmaker Bennie Ford has a standout lightweight duel for the bowl next monday when Art Aragon, from L.A. clashes with clever Richie Shinn over the ten round distance...Aragon staged two smashers against John L. Davis at Oakland in recent outings and his match with Tommy Campbell was called a two round technical draw when Art suffered a cut eye from an unintentional butt...Senor Aragon is considered one of the top prospects in the southland and is noted for his action fighting.
Frank, I would agree, loved to have seen the Bolanos fights, shame there's no film of those fights.kikibalt wrote:Art was couple of months short of being 21 years old at the time of this fight. Paul, Jesse Flores was one of the top lightweights when Art fought him. Holding Flores to a draw in 1948 said something for Art.....Flores later on had a drug problem.Cholo wrote:Frank, Art held Jesse Flores to a draw in 1948, I have this piece on the fight...
Aragon/Flores...Nov,1.1948...San Francisco.
Meeting pretty stiff opposition in young and aggressive Art Aragon of Los Angeles. Jesse Flores Stockton's lightweight contender had to go all out to earn a draw with the latest coast lightweight sensation, it was a fast moving battle all the way with Flores slowed down somewhat by the extra weight around his middle but showing nothing lost by his recent Kayo at the hands of Ike Williams. The house was a slim $5200. Referee "Little" Billy Burke voted for Aragon, one judge marked his card for Flores and the other called it even. Flores came in at 141, Aragon at 136.
Frank, Thanks for the Info on Jesse Flores, I'm still digging for more Aragon stuff. I liked Art's kill or be killed style, made for great fights.kikibalt wrote:Paul, Jesse Flores was one of the top lightweights when Art fought him. There was a crowd of only 2700 and a gross gate of only $3,540. to see Gil Cadilli in a bout at the Hollywood Legion Stadium in 1958? It is little wonder that the Legion Stadium was struggling at the time and would shut down within the next year or two.Cholo wrote:Gil Cadilli/Jimmy Moser...Jan,11.1958...
Once an Angeleno, now a San Franciscan-but still a Californian-Gil Cadilli, 131, scored the unanimous 10-round verdict over Jimmy Moser, 131, at the Hollywood Legion Stadium. Moser substituted for Alfredo Escobar, who withdrew because of "assorted miseries." About 2700 fans paid a gross of $3,540 to see the scrap. Cadilli was penalized one point for a blow below the Mason-Dixon line in the 7th round. The ballots: Referee John Thomas, 96-94: Judge Frankie Van, 97-92: Judge Jimmy Wilson, 97-94. Actually, Moser was substituting for a substitute; when Escober pulled out. Lauro Salas was substituted, but Lauro was unable to go through because he had a previous commitment at the Olympic. Considering the short notice, Moser made a good showing.

At Los Angeles, Enrique Bolanos, 138, looked good in halting Mario Trigo, 139 1/2, in the seventh round of their main event.
