Abel Fernandez

I seen Abel fight live a few times

After his boxing career was over, Fernandez became an actor. Abel had a long running part (agent William Youngfellow) in the TV series 'The Untouchables' as one of Eliot Ness (Robert Stack) crew.

Frank, I see Abel Fernandez also starred in the Steve Canyon series from the late fifties, one episode was called The Fight. I'm a big fan of the old TV shows, there on dvd.

Some "Pop" Hanley trivia . . .

In 2009, as the historian for the WBHOF, I decided to overhaul a very innacurate, incomplete Honor Roll".
I found about two dozen missing names, corrected the spelling of other names, and put things in order for the first time in decades. I did "add" a name, knowing that there was not one WBHOF official who would know the difference, since they didn't have a clue who was really in the HOF, and who's name was spelled incorrectly.

The name I added, was Daniel "Pops" Hanley, our good friend. You can find it in the 2009 "Administrators & Doctors" catagory. The only person who noticed it was the only guy who knew enough about boxing and the HOF to know the difference, and that was Don Fraser. I told Don, if the WBHOF ever gets itself together again (which it likely will not) I'll bet you the name stands.

I'm glad I did that, because Pop Hanley was a "Hall of Fame" class of a man.
My he rest in peace. He was loved by many who met him, such as Randy, Roger, John Bardelli and myself to name a few.
Some of us don't post here any longer, but this was an exception. When we toll ten at the next CBHOF event on October 20th, the name Daniel "Pop" Hanley will be read with the legends. He is in "our" Hall of Fame.

Yes, Paul. Fernandez did a good amount of TV work. Was a damn good fighter also!

Rick, Roger, Randy, Tom, I can't thank you all enough for the show of support at this very difficult time. The boxing community has absolutely engulfed me. I have received calls or e-mails from LA, San Diego, Colo, Spokane, NY, Okla, England and Italy on my Dad. I feel privilaged to have friends like you who thought so highly of my Dad and I feel privilaged to be his son.

I had forgotten about this photo taken during the filming of Rocky at the Main Street Gym in 1976. I believe I got it off the Rocky website some time ago. Mel is at the extreme left, wearing a white shirt, standing behind Jimmy Gambina, who is holding the white towel. Jimmy is the son of the late trainer Ralph Gambina. I'm standing nest to Mel but can't be seen. This scene was deleted from the movie.

During the filming of the movie, Burgess Meredith ate lunch with Mel and I. He was as down to earth as anyone could be. He picked Mel's brain as only a professional actor would do. He was researching while he was eating lunch. He was a pro. Now, a lot has been said over the years, about Burgess' Mickey being patterned after Howie Steindler, the owner of the Main Street Gym. I couldn't say. I see a lot of Mel Epstein in Mickey Goldmill.
Hi there, I know this is a very old thread, but I came across this entry via google, and I have a blog where I feature deleted scenes from films and I've just completed an entry on this lost scene from Rocky. Let me know if you spot yourself in any of the new photos I've featured from the scene? If so I'd be happy to send you a higher resolution copy.

http://theeditroomfloor.blogspot.ca/201 ... part1.html

Also, if you have a chance to read the blog entry, I'm wondering if you would like to shed any more light on the scene itself, for instance - was the portion of the scene with Rocky hitting Dipper actually filmed?

Thanks very much!

Jordan

Thanks, Charlie, it really means a lot to me. As I said before, the boxing community has been great. I received a very nice phone call from Harold Lederman from your neck of the woods last night as well. I can't say enough nice things about the people in our sport. Thanks again, Charlie.

Thanks, Frank. I recall when that was taken at the WBHF memorabilia show. Pops was 'taking five' during the event. We were always like kids in the candy store out there. It lit up his eyes when he met Carmen Basilio, his all-time favorite fighter.
