WTF Karmazin
WTF ?
Spinks is 17 places below Kamarzan despite beating him in his last outing.
If you think this is defensable, then you guys are weirder than I thought.

Re: Traditional Rankings - All Divisions
Hi Computerrank,computerrank wrote:... Traditional Rankings now with - a bit changed:
- winner higher than loser -> no change for winner, loser set back by 3 ranks for KO, TKO, DQ, else by 2 ranks
- winner lower than loser -> winner gets rank of loser or just below
-- exact winner's position is harmonic mean of loser's rank and harmonic mean of winner's rank and loser's rank
-- r_w_new = harm(r_l, harm(r_l, r_w) )
- rank loser is 3 ranks below winner for TKO, KO, DQ, else by 2 ranks
-- example: r_l=1, r_w=10 -> r_w_new = 1, r_new_l = 3
-- example: r_l=5, r_w=20 -> r_w_new = 7, r_l_new = 9
- draw: higher ranked is treated a loser, but gets rank as a winner; loser is 1 rank below
-- example: r_d_high=1, r_d_low=10 -> r_d_high_new=1, r_d_low_new=2
-- example: r_d_high=5, r_d_low=20 -> r_d_high_new= 7, r_d_low_new=8
- inactivity:
-- a boxer is not ranked, if he didn't fight within 1 year
-- he holds his ranking in the background
-- but a boxer is dropped in the background for very period of inactivity of more than 1.5 years - this maybe multiple
-- in the background his rank is multiplied with 3
-- in case of comeback his background rank is launched
- missing quality of oppononents:
- a boxer is dropped for missing quality of opponents;
- his rank is dropped by factor 2, if he didn't fight an opponent within factor 3 of his rank within 1.5 years
- maximum requirement for top15 boxers is to fight an opponent within rank 45
- weight division change:
-- not yet regarded - as would require too much computer resources for parallel calculation of rankings - maybe analysed later
So that's it - and these are the results - last bout regarded from July 23, 2006 - division hint to division assigned in BoxRec - last number are days since last bout in division:
- prediction rate over all established boxers: 63.5%

thanks for continuing this test. I think the traditional rankings do indeed start to look like traditional rankings. There are surprises in almost every division, but not as many surprises as the "predictive" rankings bring along. I think all the fighters in the top 10 of the heavies have at least proved something to me in the past, Calvin Brock has yet to do this.
A couple of things that I'd like to know still. From above.
Q1)
-- example: r_l=5, r_w=20 -> r_w_new = 7, r_l_new = 9
I thought the harmonic mean here would be r_w_new = 8 not 7. 2*5*20 divided by 5+20 = 8. Also do you round down or up. If the harmonic mean comes in at 7.4 do you rank the fighter at 7 or 8. How about 7.6, does that get rank 7 or rank 8.
Q2)
What are the factors that you are talking about in the "missing quality of opposition". Does it mean that a number one ranked fighter has to fight a top 3 fighter (factor 3) within 1.5 years to avoid being penalized. That seems a bit harsch given the difficulties in organising unification bouts.
Q3) I'm surprised by Oliver McCalls advancement since your first attempt. I realise that he beat Lewis and Akinwande, but has he really been active enough. I guess the NC against Gomez helps him.
Q4) I'm surprised at John Ruiz at 2. I assume at the time Valuev fought him, Valuev was somewhere around 10 given his victory over Donald and Donalds victory over Holyfield. If that was good enough to propel Valuev to number 1, then Ruiz must drop to at least 3. Youeven described it above.
- rank loser is 3 ranks below winner for TKO, KO, DQ, else by 2 ranks
-- example: r_l=1, r_w=10 -> r_w_new = 1, r_new_l = 3
Thanks for any answers.

ad Q1:
- sorry, you are right, I used the geometric mean
- yes, I round down in every case
ad Q2:
- as I described: maximum requirement for top15 boxers is to fight an opponent within rank 45
- for ranks 1 to 15 an opponent inside rank 45 is sufficient - exactly for the raison you mentioned
- inside factor 3 is necessary outside top 15
ad Q3:
- NC is not regarded in any case, even not to be busy
- I don't have the individual traces, but perhaps can check it for McCall
ad Q4:
- might be an effect of Byrd dropping down later
- I don't have the individual traces, but perhaps can check it for Ruiz

thanks for the answers. The more I look at the the top 30 list for the heavies, the more I like it. I think 15 thru 30 is very good. Ruiz at 2 more to do with everyones opinion of him, rather than his achievements. There was definitely a case for him being number 1 at the point of his loss to Valuev. Your explanation of his ranking because of Byrds loss is plausable, as long as Wlad was way down at the time of the bout. His win may have only propelled Wlad to #3, leaving Ruiz at #2 by default.computerrank wrote:@conan

I still maintain that a multiplication penalty for successive losses would improve the rankings and the predictability. I think a bunch of fighters get piggy backed into the ratings by wins over people who are on their way out e.g. victims Monty Barrett, Guinn, Whitakter, McCline.
Why do you need extra resources for the weight division change. Just do something simple, like multiplying the ranking by three, and slotting the fighter in.

I'm not sure multiplying by 3 is the answer. #1 would be #3, while #20 would end up being #60!conan_the_cribber wrote:thanks for the answers. Maybe multiply by 1.5 then add 2 per each class jump (round to the higher number) or * 1.25 and add 3.

Multiplying by 3 was just a quick solution to an immediate problem e.g. Mayweather starting at #600 at welter. Both your solutions produce good results. I think you need an extra rule for the transition to heavyweight though. I would never put any #1 cruiser automatically in the top 10 heavies let alone the top 5. According to both algorithms above, the best cruiser would finish in the heavyweight top 4.

... I am working on the problem of sufficient ressources to calculate the rankings of all weight divisions in one run ...
... I have to track all boxers in all divisions and all their bouts the last 18 months ... this needs ressources
... But I set up a new algorithm, which could match ...
@jason
- the factor of 3 for quality opponents is based on some analysis
- I first tried a lower factor, but found, that a high part of all boxers would continiously miss the requirements - so the criteria wouldn't be in state effectivly
- we have to accept that the effective requirements are a bit lower at this times - I really should like to see it the other way, but this is the current behaviour of the sport
- the IBO also found this, I think, they request a top 50 opponent for the top 10
@conan
- for division change I just test with factor 3 per division step up
- plus 5 ranks for step up into heavyweight

So Spinks is instantly the man after beating Karmazin (who crushed Ouma) in his own home town by a razor thin decision,.nickd wrote:conan_the_cribber wrote:WTF ?Spinks is 17 places below Kamarzan despite beating him in his last outing.

... Traditional Rankings - this could be a final approach now:
- winner higher than loser -> no change for winner, loser set back by 3 ranks for KO, TKO, DQ, else by 2 ranks
- winner lower than loser -> winner gets rank of loser or just below
-- exact winner's position is geometric mean of loser's rank and geometric mean of winner's rank and loser's rank
-- r_w_new = harm(r_l, harm(r_l, r_w) )
- rank loser is 3 ranks below winner for TKO, KO, DQ, else by 2 ranks
-- example: r_l=1, r_w=10 -> r_w_new = 1, r_new_l = 3
-- example: r_l=5, r_w=20 -> r_w_new = 7, r_l_new = 9
- draw: higher ranked is treated a loser, but gets rank as a winner; loser is 1 rank below
-- example: r_d_high=1, r_d_low=10 -> r_d_high_new=1, r_d_low_new=2
-- example: r_d_high=5, r_d_low=20 -> r_d_high_new= 7, r_d_low_new=8
- inactivity:
-- a boxer is not ranked, if he didn't fight within 1 year
-- he holds his ranking in the background
-- but a boxer is dropped in the background for very period of inactivity of more than 1.5 years - this maybe multiple
-- in the background his rank is multiplied with 3 and 5 ranks added
-- in case of comeback his background rank is launched
- missing quality of oppononents:
- a boxer is dropped for missing quality of opponents;
- his rank is dropped by factor 2 + 5 ranks, if he didn't fight an opponent within factor 3 of his rank within 1.5 years
- maximum requirement for top15 boxers is to fight an opponent within rank 45
- weight division change:
-- rank is multiplied by 3 for every division step up
-- 10 ranks are added when changing to heavyweight
So that's it - and these are the results - last bout regarded from July 23, 2006 - division hint to division assigned in BoxRec - last number are days since last bout in division:
- prediction rate over all established boxers: 62 %

... Traditional Rankings - this is the final approach now:
- winner higher than loser -> no change for winner, loser set back by 3 ranks for clear decision, for close decision loser gets some rank nearer to the winner
- winner lower than loser -> winner gets rank of loser or just below, loser gets 2 ranks behind winner for close decision, 3 ranks else
- draw: higher ranked is unchanged, loser gets some rank nearer to the winner
- inactivity:
-- a boxer is not ranked, if he didn't fight within 1 year
-- he holds his ranking in the background
-- but a boxer is dropped in the background for very period of inactivity of more than 1.5 years - this maybe multiple
-- in the background his rank is multiplied with 3 and 5 ranks added
-- in case of comeback his background rank is launched
- missing quality of oppononents:
- a boxer is dropped for missing quality of opponents;
- his rank is dropped by factor 2 + 5 ranks, if he didn't fight an opponent within factor 3 of his rank within 1.5 years
- maximum requirement for top 15 boxers is to fight an opponent within rank 45
- weight division change:
-- rank is multiplied by 3 for every division step up
-- 10 ranks are added when changing to heavyweight
So that's it - and these are the results - last bout regarded from July 23, 2006 - division hint to division assigned in BoxRec - last number are days since last bout in division:
- prediction rate over all established boxers: 62 %

- a boxer is dropped for missing quality of opponents;

I'm OK with the prediction based rankings but I think it's obvious that it pushes prospects up the ladder way too fast. Sechew Powell was the #1 LMW and he got handled by Ouma. Brock is in a similar spot, there is no way a predictive system should be picking him over Wlad. Alonzo Butler is now the #31 HW after his win over a total nobody in Wheeler? He is not very good at all and most of the guys right below him would kick his ass. Strength of competition needs to be factored in much more heavily.
Strength of opponent is factored in, indirectly. Your gains and losses depend on the strength of opponent and the result.jujigatame wrote:I'm OK with the prediction based rankings but I think it's obvious that it pushes prospects up the ladder way too fast. Hence Martins (computerranks) very gracious attempt to create a traditional ranking system. Keep reading, well see where we get.jujigatame wrote:I'm OK with the prediction based rankings but I think it's obvious that it pushes prospects up the ladder way too fast. Hi Martin,
The ranks are beautiful at heavy and cruiser, and for that matter, the top of light heavy, but some weird things start happening lower down. Despite all of my Australian pride, I cant see Shannon Taylor at number 12 at light heavy for any reason. Fernando Vargas makes a sudden appearance at 6 in the super middles, which is odd, seeming he's a junior middle. So I think there might be a slight programming mistake somewhere.
And some long questions to the formula above.
-- exact winner's position is geometric mean of loser's rank and geometric mean of winner's rank and loser's rank
-- r_w_new = harm(r_l, harm(r_l, r_w) )
Point 1) The formula
Why are you using such a complicated formula? The recursive use of the harmonic mean seems rather arbitrary. As described in the text and in the formula you take the harmonic mean of the higher ranking AND the generated harmonic mean of the original two rankings. This usage kind of contradicts the purpose of harmonic means, which is to compare rates of raw data values. I really dont know what this would say statistically, so I plugged some values into this formula and came up with some surprising results.
1A) it doesn't matter who the number one fighter fights, the winner will always be number 1. Even if ist the number 500 fighter, it will always be 1 (assuming you round down).
1B) it is the same for the second ranked and third ranked fighters, the lower ranked winner will always become number 2 or 3.
1C) The recursive harmonic mean only starts showing an effect, when the higher rank is greater than 4. Then a match up between 4 and 20 will result in the lower ranked fighter being ranked at 5 instead of 4.
1D) The effects become more pronounced, once the lower of the two rankings gets higher. This is a bit unfair for the lower ranked winner and is almost certainly affecting the predictability of the ratings. If I put in a higher rank of 20 and a lower of 25, then the lower ranked winner only gets advanced to place 21. I cant see this mirroring reality. The win against a nearly ranked peer, a crossroads fight, is one of the most important fights to weight a fighter. As far as I'm concerned, if 25 beats 20 then he should have number 20's spot at the very least.
1E) This gets worse for 'gatekeeper' fights. If 20 fights 80 and loses, then 80 ends up at 24 and the loser ends up at 26 or 27. In order to mirror real life, I think 80 should finish at 20 and the previous 20 should be sent tumbling down the rankings (actually 26 or 27 is quite nice for the first loss of this nature).
To sum up point 1. The recursive use of the harmonic mean is not really affecting the top fighters and penalizing the crossroad fights and gatekeeper fights. It might be just better, in the case of an 'upset' to just give the winner the losers rank.
Point 2) Dropping further due to successive losses.
There may be practical (or time) reasons why you haven't implemented this, but I think it will definitely improve the predictability of the rankings. Using the formula above, a fighter can stay around forever despite woeful performances. To use an example.
2A) If number 80 beats 20 by KO, then 20 moves to 24 and the loser drops to 27. Lets give the loser a name, lets say Julius Francis.
2B) If Julius Francis fights the new number 80 again, and loses again via KO, then he will land on spot 35.
2C) I continued this for the next few iterations, each time Francis loses via KO to the 80th ranked fighter. He progresses from 20 to 27 to 35 to 43 to 51. That means after five successive KO losses to 80th ranked (or thereabouts) fighters, he ONLY drops to 51. I tell you, there's no way I want anyone like that in my top 50, you cant call him a gatekeeper any more, the guy is a doormat.
This is my point. If a guy has started losing repeatadly to lower ranked fighters, without any victories against equal or better fighters, then the guy needs to drop dramatically. We've all seen it in real life, the point where age or attrition chips in and the fighter just doesnt have what it takes to win any more. The initial win against such fighters should be appropriately rewarded, but if I'm the fifth guy in a row to beat up on a Julius Francis, then it really means nothing.
To sum up. I think the predictability of the traditional rankings would be improved dramatically by accelerating the fall of fighters such as Julius Francis. I suggested an algorithm previously, that took into that account, not only the number of successive losses, but also the difference in quality of the rankings. Perhaps you could use this formula instead, which uses the harmonic mean as a multiplier.
r_w_new = r_l and
r_l_new = 1+ r_l + num_suc_losses * ( harm(r_w, r_l) - r_l)
Note: num_suc_losses means number of successive losses to lower ranked fighters without a win against a higher ranked fighter.
Using this formula, Julius Francis would progress this way down the rankings.
1st loss, was 20, lost to 80. Gets new rank 33
2nd loss, was 33, lost to 80. Gets new rank of 61.
3rd loss, was 61, lost to 80. Gets new rank of 86!
I consider this appropriate, three straight losses to number 80 ranked and you really are only 80 odd yourself. I tested this with the top of the ranking system, with a former number one losing to 10th ranked fighters.
1st loss, was 1, lost to 10. Gets new rank of 2.
2nd loss, was 2, lost to 10. Gets new rank of 5.
3rd loss, was 5, lost to 10. Gets new rank of 11 (note the fall not so dramatic, because the diff between 5 and 10 not so big).
However a fourth loss to an up and comer and the former number one is toast e.g. if RJJ had lost to Prince Badi.....
4th loss, was 11, lost to 50. Gets new rank of 40.
And finally to add some comparisons for a fringe contendor, if the fight was between 11 and 50.
1st loss, was 11, lost to 50. Gets new rank of 19.
2nd loss, was 11, lost to 50. Gets new rank of 26.
3rd loss, was 11, lost to 50. Gets new rank of 33.
And for laughs, a couple of tomato cans.
1st loss, was 100, lost to 300. Gets new rank of 151
2nd loss, was 151, lost to 300. Gets new rank of 251
3rd loss, was 251, lost to 300. Gets new rank of 318.
All in all, the formula seems to work for the top, middle and end of the rankings list.
Thanks in advance for any implementation of the above ideas.

The initial win against such fighters should be appropriately rewarded, but if I'm the fifth guy in a row to beat up on a Julius Francis, then it really means nothing.

r_l_new = 1+ r_l + num_suc_losses * ( harm(r_w, r_l) - r_l)

Using this formula, Julius Francis would progress this way down the rankings.

I'm aware of this. What I'm saying is that there needs to be a more drastic dropoff for how many points you get for fighting garbage opponents. Alonzo Butler going up 40-50 points (which equated to like 16 spots in the rankings) for shutting out Wheeler is just ridiculous. At absolute most that should have been a 5-10 point win.JCS83MD wrote:Strength of opponent is factored in, indirectly.
Well, if anyone else had a similar win over an opponent who was a similar amount of points behind them, they would've raised by an equal amount.jujigatame wrote:I'm aware of this. Fighters lose a fraction of their points each day.. so he will probably slide back some as he's past.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Looking at the ratings description, I think you need to jack up the R_DIFF value quite a bit. Having junky wins count for so much is creating a lot of anomalies (like JD Chapman nearing the top 50) and generally allowing undefeated bum-beaters to make huge undeserved leaps.Well, if anyone else had a similar win over an opponent who was a similar amount of points behind them, they would've raised by an equal amount.

@conan
- only results in division count - as there is a lot of trouble, if you transform ranks from other divisions - you referred to some bad examples
-- Shannon Taylor at number 12 at light heavy for any reason
-- Fernando Vargas
- winner gets rating of loser in any case if higher
- higher loser down depending on result and distance to lower winner
-- your proposal is not just in balance, as the winner gets too much = loser's rank, if you punish the loser too much
-- so I took the 0.25 of the logarithmic distance + 2 ranks for a close loss
-- I took 0.5 of the logarithmic distance + 3 ranks for another loss
-- this pretty fine puts down the continious higher loser
These are the results - prediction rate up to 65%:

Hi Martin,
as always, some questions.
I can see that division jumpers are one massive pain in the arse for algorithm. What's your strategy for someone who goes down a division. Do they also get multiplied by three?
Could you please explain how the algorithm works for losses. Are you tracking pure losses, or losses against lower ranked fighters? Does the 0.5 log distance + 3 ranks apply to each successive loss?
Some of the rankings below are hard to explain. I have editted the list above. I think the algorithm still needs some work somewhere along the line. Maybe when the duplicates are out or something.
Light Heavyweight
M Light Heavyweight 6 Hugo Hernan Garay 124
Who did Garay beat to get that high? Are you handling MD's like Majority Draws instead of Majority decisions?
Super Middleweight
M Super Middleweight 1 Markus Beyer 194
M Super Middleweight 2 Mikkel Kessler 208
M Super Middleweight 3 Anthony Mundine 85
M Super Middleweight 4 Joe Calzaghe 159
It's very odd that Beyer ends up on top. I would've imagined that after ottke's retirement, Calzaghe would've been lefton top. For Mundine to be above Calzaghe, Green must have been above him and before that Lucas above Calzaghe. That is odd.

Something is very odd there. Carrera has done nothing to get so high.

I am not sure what point you are trying to make here. I indicated that Taylor and Vargas are an indication that the algorithm is not really complete. I looked at the results you posted and I can see that Hatton is ranked in two divisions. One boxer, one division is pretty much a necessity for rankings.computerrank wrote: @conan

I dont agree with 'not in balance'. I dont see the argument. The formula I gave hardly punished the initial loss of the loser at all. A multiplier to deal with subsequent losses is important to negate people like Mora who really only had one decent (or lucky) win against Kirk Johnson.computerrank wrote:

Getting there prediction wise. Not so much difference at the moment, maybe it will get better once we sought out a few other problems, like the division changes.computerrank wrote:

Hi Martin,- higher loser down depending on result and distance to lower winner
-- your proposal is not just in balance, as the winner gets too much = loser's rank, if you punish the loser too much
-- so I took the 0.25 of the logarithmic distance + 2 ranks for a close loss
-- I took 0.5 of the logarithmic distance + 3 ranks for another loss

This approach is not working for me. The log distance effect is really miniscule. Taking 0.25 or 0.5 of it is practically reduces the effect to a maximum of one extra rank. As described before, Julius Francis starting at rank 20 will only end up at rank 51 despite 5 KO losses in a row to rank 80 fighters. You are not punishing the losers enough. Also, any top fighter will drop at least to 3 or 4 in the rankings, even if he fought the number 2 fighter.
The number of successive losses is critical to a good algorithm. It matches real life ranking thinking well. We've all seen fighters who just cant win anymore, they have to disappear downwards. The career of a boxer is not symmetric. The downhill slide is a lot quicker than the uphill battle. The number of successive losses against lower ranked fighters is a good indication of when that slide is happening. This indication is missing in the log stuff, in fact the brakes are put on the downhill slide.
In my algorithm suggestion I used the difference between the harmonic mean and the original ranking as a measure of the 'shock' of the victory. This worked out surprisingly well in the examples in all ranges of data. I would love to see what effect it would have on the predictability.
