The emergence of an unknown Julio Cesar Chavez on American TV for the vacant WBC junior lightweight title against the favoured hot prospect, Mario Azabache Martinez.
Well, the now forgotten Martinez sure proved he was a hard warrior, that’s for sure; you could say there’s not a lot of current fighters he wouldn’t have beaten that night, but as everyone discovered watching on TV that day, JC Chavez was something else entirely.
Also noted, you’d rarely see two better chins in a boxing ring, but whatever Martinez tried, he could not break the indomitable Chavez, who I think everyone must’ve gradually realised, was the real real thing.
Him and Duran at 135……aye chihuahua
Looking up Martinez after watching the fight, I thought the amount of wars this guy had, he’s not gonna be in great shape… but low and behold, he really is
he runs his own business and great to see he made it out with everything intact.

Martinez is a very underrated fighter. He had Azumah Nelson and Jeff Fenech on the deck. He looked a bit unlucky to drop the decision to Nelson.

it really showcased the boxing skills of Chavez, even at a relatively early stage in his career, which would go on to be greatly under-rated. His head movement and sharp accurate countering off the ropes when Martinez came at him throwing bombs was just a joy to watch.

Yes indeed, you’ve reminded me, I was blown away, watching JC on the ropes, moving his head and body inches, avoiding most of the heavy artillery and coming back with the type of punches that took down Edwin Rosario a few years later.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑01 Feb 2024, 06:37

next up surprisingly was Roger Mayweather, which I sort of recall was on fairly short notice, and I remember thinking wow they’ve got massive confidence in this guy, to be taking on a sharpshooting nuclear puncher like Roger Mayweather so soon

Yes I forgotten about those knockdowns, amazing stuff, two of the best chins around as well, which shows how tough JCC was. I read a Martinez interview after watching the fight, where he says the best he thought was Chavez, but the strongest and hardest hitting was the mighty Azumah Nelson.
