Re: MMA thread?
So many great things have come from this fight already.
My favourite would probably be 'they all turn into panic wrestlers' referring to when he hits guys then of course he turned into one. Then the was the contrast from Holm to McGregor as Holm fought the whole way until she went unconscious and Mac tapped very quickly some people even saying(I'm not sure which way to go on this TBH) that he gave his back/neck to Diaz so he. Would stop being punched and tapped the moment it was tight. Then you had the insane McGregor fans saying he was going to fight and beat Lawaler at UFC200.
Even in some of the trash talking Diaz was able to turn some of Macs good one liners against him with things like you've only beaten midgets etc it appears though that the UFC hasn't learnt it's lesson when hyping one dimensional fighters, and this to me is greater than the fall of Rousey(I prefer McGregor to Rousey infinitely more) as the UFC set Diaz up like they never did with Holm or anyone Rousey beat. Putting Diaz on a business show so McGregor and the host could belittle him was for me a new low for the UFC, I was disgusted that they did that. They knew exactly what was going to happen, Nate isn't a smart or witty guy he was always going to look like a moron on that show and they knew it. The fight was epic though I think Nate looked worse than he was because of scar tissue but he still took McGregors best shots and when he gave his back McGregor folded.
I'm excited to see where the UFC goes with Connor now obviously they're going to talk up the point that the fight was at 170 while leaving out that Diaz is a LW who took the fight on 2 weeks notice and was happy to make the 155 limit. Personally I would like to see Aldo vs McGregor 2 the first fight was over way too quickly Aldo has beaten everyone except Mac in the division and he reigned for a long time as well. I think in another fight between the two Aldo wins as he is just so well rounded and he made a stupid mistake that I doubt he makes again. McGregor needs to fix the holes in his grappling and even his striking even while he was beating Diaz he looked very beatable tonight as he makes some basic errors that good guys can take advantage of. Have to remember that Diaz isn't particularly fast or powerful or even that great defensively he's just tough fighter.

Re: MMA thread?
Good post especially the second paragraph. I actually felt really sorry for Diaz on that business show - he done the right thing walking away. He talked a good fight game in the lead up and got under McGregors skin at times - bringing up steroids was clever, not responding to McGregors's jeers and insults didn't give Conor fuel to add to his verbal fire, bringing up McGregor's training partners (or lack of). Conor throwing the cheap shot on Diaz's hand in the face off was pretty poor form - however, instead of backing off, Diaz rushed at McGregor which I think took the Irishman aback somewhat. As an Irishman myself, I'm obviously disappointed with him being beaten but I think it was a good wake up call to him. Nobody is invincible especially not in a combat sport.p4p1 wrote:So many great things have come from this fight already.

Apparently UFC is more mainstream than boxing. It's taking over. McGregor vs Mayweather is (was) the billion dollar fight.
But last night a slob in hot pants "shook up the world". Beating McGregor was the equivalent of being the youngest HW champ to take the title.

Being in the pub though no casual fan expected McGregor to lose so I guess in a way it shook up the world. Hardcore fans weren't willing to write Diaz off completely though I know I wasn't but I didn't expect him to win. Pretty rough calling Diaz a slob though.

Awesome job by Nate. Conor is no Rousey, though. He'll bounce back from this. I guarantee it.

Last night certainly showed Mcgregor wouldn't stand a chance against Mayweather in a boxing match. The hype around that guy was just ridiculous.

Caldwell is no joke. I would not be surprised if he beat Cruz if the UFC signed him rather than Bellator.

I saw the fight. Bruce Buffer has re-shaped his act a bit. He looked as tho Paul McKenna had put him underand said when I snap my fingers you'll wake up as a cockerell. The fcking berk. It's not good when thatis your best ring announcer.
Of the fight mind you, a good honest affair if you ask me. I liked it. The lame build up tho with well paid white men goading them into hurling playground insults.and profanity at each other however left me completely cold.......normally tough well trained fighting men tend to leave that nonsense alone. I was surprised.
Re: MMA thread?
I normally watch the UFC with the sound off. I can't stand the hyperbole of Goldberg and Rogan. I watched last night fights live and turned could last until round three of the Holm/Tate match. After a couple of "What's going through Ronda Rousey's mind right now." from one of those knuckleheads, I had to hit the mute button.
Holm/Tate was a fun match. Tate obviously has learned from GSP: let your opponent overextend a punch and use that as your set-up for a takedown. Not knocking Holly at all, she did what she does best too by picking an opponent off with jabs, kicks, and straight left hands.
I am not a fan of instant rematches, but I'd rather see Holm/Tate II & Rousey vs. Nunes with the winner of each fighting each other.
As for Conor vs. Nate. What else can be said besides I hope Nate doesn't fail a drug test for pot and the fight ending up as a NC.

Who cares? The balloon has been popped. The weed has been pulled. The spinach has been wilted. The king turned out to be less than impressive naked. Holm showed far bigger sac than that Trump wannabe. The suit has been dry cleaned and pressed.zojo, wrote:

I am not convinced that the hype job ever recovers fully from this bitch slapping by one of the common folk. Maybe White should match McGregor v Rousey

I believe Floyd Patterson was the youngest but won a vacant, Tyson broke Clay's record of taking the title from the champ, iirc.p4p1 wrote:Well Ali wasn't the youngest.Ricky_ wrote:Nightmare Roy wrote:Good to see another of these Pub fighters who bring down boxing get chinned!

Re: MMA thread?
Yep, the losers in this case Holm and McGregor did handle it with some class.
McGregor gave Diaz the respect of absolutely no trash talk, and turned the loss into full retrospection.
I sort of gained my first bit of respect for Connor in this loss. So I can probably enjoy the rest of his career.
Good fighter, good entertainer, and an honorable person...even if a bit unique in that category.
145 to 170 is a bridge too far at the top classes of this game.....and if you looked at them post fight....McGregor looked like
he just took a walk in the park and Diaz looked like he took the same walk but got mugged.
Diaz won the fight, but McGregor laid some graffiti on his face during the course of the fight.
I was happy that Diaz won. But I think I can reassess what I think of Connor based on his response to this loss.

Re: MMA thread?
McGregor looked like he didn't like it once the going got tough against a man his own size ( to be fair I've only seen 3 fights of his, the other two I thought he was fighting a guy a weight division below himself! )
He landed some decent shots in the first round but Diaz shook them off and dug deep. Diaz landed some decent shots second round and McGregor seemed to fold. Now he's been beaten, there's a chance he loses confidence, self doubt creeps in etc
He can fight no doubt but he's a tad overhyped to say the least. I'm assuming his background is kick boxing?
I'm glad I took the tip on here of Diaz by sub

Re: MMA thread?
Well post fight Mac was talking about heading back to 145 for an Aldo rematch, yes I know Edgar is supposed to be next in line but Aldo deserves it more. He was champ for 6 years or so and has beaten Edgar. I like Aldo in a rematch I'm sure he's learnt his lesson and will fight smart.
Re: MMA thread?
Maybe, and I will give him credit if he makes a fine comeback, but he gave up when he went for the takedown last night, in order to avoid more punishment in standup. He knew that Diaz would submit him in short order, especially since he had decided to submit before the rear naked was sunk.King Carlos wrote:Clearly you haven't seen how he's been carrying himself after the fight. From what i seen Mcgregor got wobbled by a big shot after dominating then he never recovered, kind of elected to go to ground in fatigue more than anything and was too effed to keep Diaz off him
In saying that i know hee haw about MMA
So whos the next big star who'd beat Ali and Tyson on the same night

Still think Mcgregor beats Aldo again.p4p1 wrote:We know the weight is going to be spun non stop here in McGregors favour but let's not get it twisted, McGregor trained his whole camp for a fight at 155 after he felt he couldn't physically cut that much to get down to 145 anymore. Nate a career lightweight took the fight on just under two weeks notice, he said that he could make 155 but Dana/the UFC wanted 170(which worked out for him because then he just had to focus on a short notice fight and not a short notice weight cut) he didn't look like he cut too make weight at most he cut a couple of pounds and he came into the fight weighing probably around the same McGregor did.
McGregor leaves himself open to countering too much, Bring in Aldo V Mac 2.

I wouldnt say he had a huge size advantage over Aldo though, weight wise. Aldo was always a big ass featherweight aswell in terms of rehydrating.Impractical Poster wrote:Yes... Re: MMA thread?
The aura of invincibility is now gone from McGregor. I believe a huge part of his game was the mental warfare and confidence he would display before his matches. We saw how weak his ground game was in the Mendes fight (another fighter called in on 2 weeks notice). Once Nate had him on the ground, it was quick work. The top at LW are not going to take his trash talk seriously now, and should dispatch of Conor fairly easily, barring they don't get caught on the feet. Conor is a very fast and flashy striker, but he has been feasting on the 145ers. He has enjoyed a significant size advantage over those guys.
I believe Aldo and Edgar will beat Mac at 145 as well. I doubt the trash talk will have the same effect of Jose this time round.
I also think Conor is going to have a harder time making 145 from now on. He will most likely settle into 155 and become a gatekeeper.

He was a decent amateur boxer but then got into MMA and particularly studied karate/taekwondo in regards to his striking.lillywhite14 wrote:McGregor looked like he didn't like it once the going got tough against a man his own size ( to be fair I've only seen 3 fights of his, the other two I thought he was fighting a guy a weight division below himself! )
