My point is saying you support the President, the troops, and the country wasn’t always looked on as a bad thing. You might even remember those times. Trash talk, even jingoistic nationalist stuff has been in combat sports forever but I’ve never seen somebody get Colby’s heat for it. As for your second point, that is patently false. Sports “bad guys” are often very popular and definitely heroes for younger generations of athletes within their sport. That’s not new. Sporting history is literally littered with “assholes” who were favorites.

People look past poor behavior when they like someone. If enough people like you, you're a hero and you can get away with pretty much anything ESPECIALLY in sports. That's what the list I posted proved. Colby's trash talk, while disrespectful, seems tame compared to the behavior of real American sports "heroes" of the past: rape, domestic abuse, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, infidelity, murder, etc etc etc. If Colby didn't wear that hat, people wouldn't care nearly as much about what he said because he isn't saying anything worse than anyone else. It's called trash talk for a reason, and like it or not there is a lot of financial proof out there that trash talk works.
