Danny green Vs Roy Jones Jr
Re: Danny green Vs Roy Jones Jr
Your not far off the mark.
Fenech although winning the IBF when it worthless at least went on and proved he belonged with the elite of his era. Fenech would have been a legitimate World Champion in any era IMO and most other Aus fighters cant claim that.
Well said.
but why was fenech used as an example?
Isn't he in the boxing hall of fame, which very few Australians have achieved.
I like the IBO, i just think having 5 major sanctions is just too much, 5 world champions is ridiculous and that 1 sanction should drop off.
Yes i agree, but will it ever happen.
Can we dream on and hope that 4 sanctioning bodies drop off?
Speaking of Fenech and the IBF title......I wonder how he would have gone against the WBC and WBA titleholders of the day - Richie Sandoval and Miguel Lora. And if he'd fought and lost against one of these guys instead of the weak titleholder Shingaki, how his career would have unfolded

If's..., but it didn't and he is in the BHOF now, all sorted. :Pbollox wrote:Speaking of Fenech and the IBF title......I wonder how he would have gone against the WBC and WBA titleholders of the day - Richie Sandoval and Miguel Lora. Hey you know what would be good, if one of the best boxers in the last 50 years came to Australia and fought Danny green, so that one day i can tell my grandkids that i was once present to see Roy Jones jnr fight, and it doesn't bother me at all that his 5,6 years past his best, because it's Roy jones jnr.
Re: Danny green Vs Roy Jones Jr
Sorry but I don't feel the same way due to Jones' deterioration as a fighter. Now if you're talking a prime Jones then that's a completely different matter altogether (it's a pity we usually can't afford to bring the best fighters down here). I saw Azumah Nelson live down here and his skill level at the time was higher than Jones' is today. I'd say he's the best fighter that's visited our shores in decades

I respect your opinion.

Re: Danny green Vs Roy Jones Jr
I'l try mate. But it's almost futile as the IBO have shown they can sanction a title fight with anyone. lolBrute wrote:Perfect Jet may be able to enlighten us more, but the way I understand it anybody the IBO rates in the top 30 can challenge for the IBO title.
It's actually supposed to be top 35 but rankings count for nothing with this org. Green and Dominguez aren't even rated in the IBO top 100 at cruiser according to their June ratings. Green has had one fight at cruiserweight. But apparently he and Dominguez were rated high enough at light heavy (so what, the fight is at cruiser
But I think the IBO have topped this one. Try this on for size...
Lovemore v Philip Ndou fight in Sth Africa on July 11 has been sanctioned as an IBO title fight for the vacant 147 belt.
A little surprising given:
- Lovemore has lost his last two fights.
- Philip Ndou has had one fight in five years, a win against a guy nobody has heard of who wasn't ranked anywhere. I think he was 16-5 or something. Rachid Drilzane.
- Philip Ndou isn't even ranked in the IBO top 100.
Hang on though...Philip Ndou apparently gets carry over points from fighting at jnr welter (remember he has had 1 fight in 5 years) so his ranking is actually #60. But that's still outside the top 35 right? Well, the promoter in this case asked for a special exemption. You see, Ndou v Ndou was actually going to be an elimination bout (even though the IBO don't have "official" eliminators) and the winner was going to fight Matt Hatton for the vacant belt. Hatton went on to sign for a fight with Zab Judah so that nixed those plans. So the exemption was granted and despite two guys being ranked #27 and #60, it was considered appropriate to make it a world title fight.
Still scratching your head? lol. Ok...the cynical side of me says that it's nothing but blatant spin doctoring. The IBO have monthly online ratings. If they are computer generated, why don't they reflect Green at #6 in the most recent June ratings, considering his last fight was in Aprill. Why doesn't it show Philip Ndou rated #60 in the recent May ratings when his last fight was in Feb? WHY DO FIGHTERS LEAP FROG IN RATINGS ONLY AFTER THE PROMOTER PETITIONS FOR A TITLE FIGHT TO BE SANCTIONED??? These fighters weren't in the top 100 as far as their online ratings showed. The IBO vIce prez had to explain it. IBO=TRANSPERANCY PLUS!
And I really need help with this one...what is the advantage of being rated eg #2 as opposed to #32? If guys rated #27 and #60 can fight for a belt, and Green can have one fight at cruiser and be rated #6 whilst Dominguez is #?..at the very least, what's the point of rating guys from 1-35...it appears to serve absolutely no purpose at all.
Maybe the IBO do things better than other sanc bodies. They aren't inherantly different to any other org imo. How did Barrera get a shot at Amir Khan for the WBO belt? How does Ganoy conqueror Fernando Angulo get a shot at Yuri Romanov for the IBF belt? The kid lost his last fight, didn't make weight and didn't make weight against Ranee either. He was penalised for not making weight against Ganoy in that even if he won the fight (he did), he would not get the #2 spot (it was a #2 elimination bout). So if that was the penalty for being over the weight limit, what was his penalty for being overweigth AND losing his last fight?...a shot at the 135 IBF lightweight belt!!! work that one out!!!
My 2c.

Monty/Phil,
Might be able to help us with the facts involved. I questioned him on another forum in regards to Domiguez getting a crack at the title and he answered..

ibf then is equivalent to wbf now.
Shingaki had ten fights before fighting Fenech. He was the inaugural IBF Bantamweight champion. The inaugural IBF heavyweight champion was Larry Holmes, inaugural middleweight champion Marvin Hagler, inaugural cruiserweight champion Marvin Camel. Not bad?
