Setanta's problem is a common business problem which can be summed up in one word, competition. Sky is well established, with a massive product portfolio (its variety of channels) and a loyal, expanding customer base. Setanta is trying to muscle in on a company that is a global business while offering products that would be considered "fringe" by 90% of the population and the one sport that is universal (football) you can just nip to the local to watch, got my local to put on Oxford United games when my viewing card f*cked up!

I will continue paying my £10 as I don't want to see another Northern Rock situation where everyone shits themselves, withdraws their support and then is left to complain that they have no choices except a monopolistic, multi-national.

Is the feeling still that Ahye was injured, and not that he had his fingers burnt by Setanta?

Intresting article. I reckon this has more to do with David Haye getting a back injury that are pretty damm hard to prove!

I don't think a single person now seriously believes Haye's suffered any kind of injury. Have to feel sorry for him as he's a victim of circumstance.

Just playing devils advocate here. Is it circumstance, or promotional inexperience and greed?

I could offer Lennox Lewis 200m to come out of retirement on a 2 fight deal, but Lennox would be experienced enough to know that I aint good for it. How come quite a few individuals on here spotted the frailties and financial problems, but a multimillion pound business company couldnt. Would you not ask to see Setantas accounts before settling a X fight deal with them?

To be fair, far bigger, more experienced people than the Haye camp are coming unstuck from dealing with Setanta.

Well, looks like they're toast unless someone comes to bail them out. They apparently went cap in hand to Sky! Why on earth would sky want to offer them an interest free loan, which is what they asked for?

It's sad they're going to the wall, but the reality appears to be that their business model is wrong. Why is someone going to want to shell out 15 quid a month, on top of a sky subscription, and possibly sky sports as well, it's just too much to ask.

I only stayed with them because they screwed up and only charged me 5 quid a month for six months, but I think whatever happens now, I'm cancelling. I'm also going to cancel sky sports. I may cancel Sky altogether and get a Freesat TV.

Have to wonder if this had something to do with the Chagaev "withdrawal" from the Valuev fight. Very sceptical that a guy apparently with hepititis? could fight less than 20 days later

Doubt it because it's not that big. It's at the Olympia so fairly small arena and TV or not Hayemaker need to get these fighters fighting

I just cancelled Sky Sports and Setanta this very morn.

I feel bad for Setanta from a boxing fans perspective, they did appear to be at least trying but that was fizzling out and now with the cancellation of the Haye fight there really was no more reason to hang on in there.

Sky can go to hell with regards their boxing coverage, I should have cancelled them ages ago.

Sky are pretty bad with their boxing coverage. It's just mismatches or low quality fights, but the killer thing is, whenever there's a decent fight like Khan/Kotelnik or any Hatton fight they expect you to fork out £15 to watch it. That to me, is fecking scandalous.

And someone please tell me what Khan has done to be boxing on Box Office.

I beg to differ, I bet most of the money for the fights is coming form TV. I wa sonce told by a promoter without TV money its hard to get anything going.

I think this stuff goes as far back as Ryan Rhodes withdrawal personally.

I agree that it's going to affect Hayemaker in a big way but I think this show will go forward with or without TV. The fighters fighting need to fight and Hayemaker can't afford to wait another month or two before getting them out again.
However if Setanta go down the pan Hayemaker might be in trouble because of the deals the Boxers are getting and they won't get a replacement deal from Sky which is as good as with Sky.
I think the big problem we have is that Sky are going to be the only people prepared to show boxing and therefore can dictate whatever terms they like.

I'd float the notion he took one for the team because the show wasn't going to make money, which may have been in part due to renegotiated fees with Setanta, its idle speculation. I dont believe Rhodes bottled it and I didn't entirely buy the reason offered. Talk of poor ticket sales were swirling at the time too.
