Getting quality sparring is essential to bring prospects on as the real learning is done in the gym at that stage, but just being used as a sparring partner is something else. I thought it was criminal he was in Haye's training camp, but they did not make room for him on the bill. Again it highlights the problem being in a promotional team which is completely based around one fighter.
Like Naseem and Lewis, fighters always start up their own promotional companies vowing to revolutionise the game. The problem starts when they then realise that they may have to spend their own money as opposed to the television companies.
As it has transpired, Hayemaker had a heart attack and would rather let fighters waste away then spend their own money on progressing their careers- seems like Hayemaker have realised how the promotional game works.
The only boxer-promoter cross over I can see making it in the long term is Hatton. But it just depends how deep he's prepared to dig into his fortune to make it work. Team Calzaghe won't get past the Severn bridge.
The likes of Naseem only did it after he broke into the big time, solely to maximise his own earnings, rather than to establish his own stable. Hayemaker promotions reminds me very much of A Force promotions where they take on a stable, make all kinds of promises to fighters and to revolutionise the game etc but when it comes down to it, they only care about themselves.
From the outside it does look like Hatton promotions are willing to invest but it will be interesting to see how motivated they are after Matthew Hatton retires.
The Calzaghe's are doing it out of loyalty to the existing Newbridge camp, but seem only to be realising now that promotions is just like burning cash unless you have tv, and I don't think they will spend their own cash, esp in the light of Joe's missing millions from FW
Forming your own promotions company, is a bit like setting yourself up as a ltd company as opposed to being employed as a temp, you get to set your own rates, invoice and write stuff off as expenses.
However, being a proper promoter involves making investments in the future of your fighters. Although the payoffs can be huge, the risks are great too, you can invest in a fighter pay him well, and he loses at the wrong time and his cachet falls away, or even worse, just when he reaches his maximum earning potential he buggers off (see Hamed, Calzaghe and Hatton), leaving you out in the cold.

I always though Price would be better as a pro than amatuer and I still think he could be he seems to enjoy training at working hard and that can only be good.
I think the best thing that he can do is fight a couple of times under small maybe more local promoters to build up a name for himself first and then when he has built up a bit of a legion of fans there will be promotors and tv deals flying at him. This way he will be fresher to the wider public.
Why do so many good amatuers always need to be with the biggest promotors straight away?
I think with the lack of boxing on tv at the moment it can only be a good thing for promotors as more people will surely be turning up to their shows and maybe there will be more and more live shows online as well. This means that promoters will have to work for there money which can only be a good thing as this will surely make for better boxing shows.

Small local promoters could not afford to bring in opponents for Price.
If he had gone with FW the TV deal would be in place, and he would be able t build on his existing fan base rather than having those fans forget about him, as i'm sure many are at the moment.
Top amateurs go with the big promoters because thats were the money and the TV is.
Promoters who put shows on without TV already work damn hard, often just to break even so their fighters get some work

i wasn't impressed at all actually.
Very constructive. I'm sure he'll take your points on board.
i didn't say he's shit did i.
i just don't think he'll mount to much in the pro's.
especially on the evidence of his pro debut.
he looks easy to hit.
and we know about his chin problems for the ams.

Its a shame he's a really good fighter but they need to keep him active 1 fight is not enough Peret would be a good fight for him imo i think he is better than Fury and seems like a really nice guy

All this may be true. But unlike, say, Tyson Fury, I think Price can properly crack. Definitely some highlight reel shows if the lad gets on TV.

David Price

Arguably one of the most talented boxers of our olympic team and someone who should be a real prospect, he has fought once as a pro im march. No doubt he's getting very good sparing in with Haye indeed I can't imagen anyone getting any better, but he seriously needs to step up and get in the ring more, once every month or two months.
Do any of you guys with your ears to the ground know whats going on?

The Setanta collapse is very unlucky for Price who clearly needs regular fights at this early stage of his career. One fight in the first 6 months is obviously not enough and the likes of Tyon Fury (who has had 7 fights in 8 months) is going to streak ahead in experience. Lets hope David can get some fights soon.

Any news or rumers about him getting on anyone else's shows etc? It's a shame he can't get on that show in liverpool but I imagen Warren would rather sexually experiment with a hippo than help out David Haye!

There is a non televised show planned by Hayemaker in Liverpool for October, which will feature David I understand.

Leforge,
Of course they could do joint shows.
Suppose it all depends on their relationship with that Promotor.
Craig Watson fought on the Hatton show recently, for instance.

And Rhodes took the Moore fight on a Maloney show. Groves was going to do a small-hall Left jab show but could not be matched. There's just no small-hall promoter in Liverpool who puts on regular shows.

I think Price has been out of action for far too long now and him and his team should (as the guys above are saying) just bite the bullet, and fight on an untelevised show or ask for a favour off a rival promoter. He isnt gonna be fighting guys that great at this stage and just wants to be ticking along. It's far better for him to be 5-0 when a Hayemaker tv deal is sorted, and maybe be fighting in 8 rounders rather than still be 1-0 and be right at the bottom of the ladder.
