3. They make the fans have a great night cheering for "World Championship Boxing".

I'm sure I have missed a few others.

1. Not too different from the WBC in Kings heyday as a promoter.

2. Nothing wrong with boxers making extra money if they can, we all would so why not them?

3. Anyone who believed they were watching "World Championship Boxing" at a WBU fight is a effing eejit.
excatly, the 4 major organisations have been established for a while now so even if a new organisation came in they would struggle. They could come on board promising changes and to be fair but if they cant make fights with top fighters what choice to they have but to put on title fights with what they have. The WBU was never taken seriously by boxing fans who know better but i think the most of us would have a problem with it being marketed as World championship boxing when in reality it was far from it.
The problem is boxers like Farnell were saying they were "World Champions". Boxers like Willie Limond are now trying to legitimize the title and saying they are "the champion of the world".

You think they were champions of the world when they were not even the best at domestic level?

With that i agree but it wasnt just fighters like Arnie who were guilty of that (if he is guilty? because i cant remember)

Farnell was guilty of it, he did a disgusting piece for Sky where he was showering with the belt and saying how much he loved it. I mean, come on. I have that on tape actually, I should upload it to youtube. If Farnell was to come out now and say, "Fair enough, I wasn't a world champion" it would be OK and respect would be given, but he still defends that he was a world champion and that belt actually meant something. Sorry, it meant nothing mate. He can't even see how disrespectful that is to the fans. I don't care if he posts here or whoever posts here. I am going to post my thoughts regardless and many others should follow suit. I respect Farnells warrior spirit and heart OF COURSE but...

Also I think this topic has been good because the likes of Frankie Gavin/Bomber know the contempt the fans have for the likes of WBU titles.

Goodbye Mortimer! I think sometimes us fans don't see boxers as real people with real needs. If you've got bills to pay, family to support and are a professional boxer who is offered good money to fight for a WBU title, would you take it or would you stand on your high horse and turn down the fight? I know what I'd do. Perhaps Frankie shouldn't have called sworn, but at the same time the original post has it has a disrespectful tone. I agree that the proliferation of alphabet titles are bad for boxing, but IMHO the blame lies with the promoters and tv execs, not the fighters.

He was disrespectful of Arnie IMO, I mean would you approach him in a pub and say "Alrite mate, the title you won that you spilled blood, sweat and tears for, made sacrifices for and trained countless hours for, is shite. Don't let any of your fighters fight for it please."

Ps. Arnie gave me some cracking nights entertainment(I was at the Guild Hall for the Talakin Fight), and so maybe he would have fallen short at true world-class (Santos(still a world champ today!), Winky Wright) no shame in that. I think he proved at the very least he could hang in top domestic class with his ko's of Lawrence Murphy, Scott Dixon and Lee Blundell. I also felt that Arnie was best suited to lightmiddleweight, but took fights at middleweight because opportunities arose there and because of the loss to the Tak.

Well, I would hope that we don't see the rise of "WBU" style titles and similar- and I'd hope to see more domestic prospects actually fighting... each other.

If the individual has been banned before, & keeps coming back under new aliases, & likes to shitstir (see his wondrous "Kessler/Ward is off!" thread) what would you do with him? Give him a big gold star or something?

Frankie calling a prick a prick is hardly reason to ban the kiddie, is it?

You are correct - a lot worse has been said - and its been by that **** Mortimer in another one of his aliases - he wrote a disgusting tirade against Ricky Hatton being sprawled on the canvas against Pacman - he expressed his total delight so much so he elaborated on things - at the time a number of senior forum members expressed their disgust at this and he was duly banned.

Forum members often have disagreements - I should know as I enjoy being amongst the disagreements if I feel particularly strong about things - but - that is what this forum is designed for - if we all agreed - life would be rather dull!!! - however Mortimer under on his other aliases also thought it would be great to threaten my family by PM and when he was brought to task about it he openly admitted it but then tried to back track on things when he realised he had dropped himself in it.

The moderators do a fabulous job on here - they allow debates to on occasions push the boundaries to the limits - a bit of name calling is harmless and if everyone was brought to task about it - then it really would be stupid - we live in a world that is already gone politically correct gone mad and I am surprised you are attempting to get a high profile professional boxer banned when all he has done is call someone a pr*ck!!!

As long as high profile members from the boxing world come on here and do not mind entering into at times quite volatile debate then its fine by me - however Mortimer, Lirva amongst his other names was truly a disgusting piece of work who thought it hilarious to threaten peoples families with violence and in addition gloat over a boxer being stretchered out of the ring - if he gets back on this forum - the place will be a lot poorer.

I understand the idiot has been banned at least 7 times - he is an obsessive troll.

At the time that Anthony Farnell first challenged for a WBU "world" title in July 2001, Oscar De La Hoya had recently beaten Javier Castillego for the WBC championship in Las Vegas. These were light middleweight contests of course.

The following summer, Farnell moved up to middleweight, and lost on points to Ruben Groenewald, again for a WBU "world" title. Three months later, Farnell won the return bout, on points, to become, according to the WBU, the world middleweight champion. This happened to be during Bernard Hopkins long reign at middleweight.

Farnell managed one successful defence, against the unknown Nikolay Talalakin, before losing his WBU belt to ten fight novice Wayne Elcock.

He won it back in 2004 against 14 fight novice Lawrence Murphy, before losing it to 12-7 Eugene Monteiro.

I really did enjoy following Farnell's career and I really do wish him the best as a trainer. I've nothing against him, the issue for me is that he's just not a former world champion. Around the time that he was fighting hand-picked opponents in his home town, the best in the world at 154lbs and 160lbs were competing in massive fights in Las Vegas. For me, Farnell is as much of a former world champion as Audley Harrison, who briefly held a minor title.

Some boxing fans are happy or tolerant of multiple world title belts, others less so, and I fall into the latter category.

None of this is meant to take away anything from Farnell, who was as dedicated, brave and entertaining as they come.

However, in our premiership league, there are a number of teams who can claim to be dedicated, brave and entertaining, but the integrity of the league system is such that there can be only one premiership champion per season. While footie fans can argue, until the cows come home, about clubs effectively buying the title by paying massive fees and wages to secure the best players, there's no doubt, year on year, we all know who the premiership champions are.

Boxing's problem is that, going back to Farnell's run as WBU middleweight champion, Bernard Hopkins and William Joppy were also claiming to be world middleweight champions too. Hopkins beat Joppy, De La Hoya, and many other top class fighters.

I suppose it comes down whether you feel there is something a bit "not quite right" about the phrase "a world champion" rather than "the world champion". At the time of Farnell's WBU title run, for me the "world champion" was Bernard Hopkins.

Listen guys you'll find Frankie is probably just taking the p1ss.. He just reacts to get a reaction and he's probably been crying laughing at you guys calling him a prick, The kid is a real diamond when you get to know him.. As for the WBU title talk, I don't think there is nothing wrong with it, I think it was good for boxers and got them great paydays BUT I said we wouldn't be going down that route cos I know TV don't like them anymore and we fight on TV so it ain't happening.. :TU:

Fighters are bigger than titles now as has been proven over the last 5 years or so, All the massive fights rarely have a title at stake or if there is one it's the RING belt which is now being looked at as who is generally the best in the division.. I just hope this super 6 thing goes right through all the divisions cos if it does then boxing will go huge again it really will

As for Farnell, He was probably one of the bravest boxers I have ever seen and never ever gave in!! He excepts he was limited technically BUT I feel he made up for that in guts and fitness!! He had a good career and now has his house, cars and everything else paid for so I think he done quite well for himself, He has more holidays than Jordan and also has a couple of successful business from boxing too, Not to mention his coaching ability, I've been round an awful lot of coaches, Some of them who have an awful lot of credentials and champions behind them and Arnie matches up to all of them without a shadow of a doubt, I had a few places I could go when I was turning over BUT it was never a choice, There was only 1 place I was ever going to end up and that was with the best trainer in the country for me and that was Anthony "The Warrior" Farnell

Yeah, fair play that it was a good payday for the boxer- and nothing wrong with that.

However , from a fan's perspective, we like to see good, well matched bouts too, and we also like to see there being real competition for the proper titles, such as the British Title.

I'm not unrealisitc, though - I do appreciate that fighters need paydays and sometimes belts and titles are needed to sell a show- it's all about balance.

But yeah, stuff like Fury V McDermott for the English title is most definatly a step in the right direction.

Spot on Bomber on all counts - I first watched Anthony Farnell in his up and down WAR with Commonwealth medalist Marty Renagen in his 2nd pro fight - what a Warrior who had a huge following. The last time I saw him box live was in his intense battle with the Portugese steroid cheat. He was a cracking pro who gave 110% at all times. Anyone who criticises him as a fighter is a dick. He lives and breathes the sport. A cracking fighter and one of the best young trainers in the sport. As for Frankie - judge him on what his fists do. The lad is dynamite. All these critics couldnt carry his jock strap. Go on you Blues boy!

you dont need to apologize as what makes a forum is different points of view. When i first read that what Gavin had posted was actually for him i was disapointing that a pro would rise to a wind up mercheant. However in the context of things although its not the wisest thing he has done it was only in defence of someone obviously he cares about. Yes he maybe should of used a different tone and maybe hummour would of been a better weapon but he is not worse than i was at his age and i turned out alright in the long run, i think
I really like him as a boxer, top prospect!! just gutted me a bit how he responded to the msg...we all make mistakes...ive made plenty, that age id been locked up for few years...i just find it shocking how he come back wiv the response he come back with...but i would like to say now FRANKIE GAVIN i WISH YOU ALL THE BEST(TOP PROSPECT) just plz dont act like that again coz ur lose the fans :TU:

they started off with a blank canvas but had no choice to get into bed with certain promoters to raise their profile as it made buisness sense. The other major bodies have no excuse to rig the rankings or sanction poor matches as they are already established and should know better. Is there really that much difference between WBU and the recent history of the WBA or IBF? or the poor match making and biased to certain Promoters policy that the WBO follow?
I searched your post for the answer to my question, Mark. But, alas, I found nothing...

But you're indicating that people condoned Tyson's actions, when in truth, people lost respect for him for his misdemeanors. If Frankie wants to come and call a troll a prick then at least have the intellect and savvy to do it correctly.
