Agreed. He was a bit hard done by in the first place imo.crusader wrote:He should rematch Typsko to avenge his loss. I think he would beat him handily this time.
Magee was a former underfeated British super middleweight champion was he not?Manc_Red wrote:Stop stirring the poop m8 - No need for it on a Saturday night. The quiet man 2004 wrote:Tv needed to have picked this up.

It would help if Irish Catholics who of the nationalist bent (and nothing wrong with that) would stop fighting for British and Commonwealth titles - nearly every Irish Catholic top class boxer has fought for and won either a British or a Commonwealth title - I have no problem with the political view that Ireland should be united but how can an Irish catholic nationalist such as Darren Corbett or Eamonn Magee or Martin Rogan fight for the goddamn commonwealth title? Thats a joke right? Surely, the commonwealth title must be rather offensive for a nationalist Irishman to fight for?ApolloCreed wrote:Tell you what, tell Magee he's a Brit to his face and see what happens!

Indeed - and it goes to show how cheaply a mans political and moral beliefs can be bought for.banjo wrote:£££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££It is a fact that Magee was an undefeated British champion and if he finds it so offensive to be labelled 'British' then why did he fight for the title? I am surprised at you Carlos to come out with nonsense like that.Carlos-Wigan wrote:It would help if Irish Catholics who of the nationalist bent (and nothing wrong with that) would stop fighting for British and Commonwealth titles - nearly every Irish Catholic top class boxer has fought for and won either a British or a Commonwealth title - I have no problem with the political view that Ireland should be united but how can an Irish catholic nationalist such as Darren Corbett or Eamonn Magee or Martin Rogan fight for the goddamn commonwealth title? I think most British boxing fans - including myself - are more that happy to proclaim every fighter who fights out of Ireland as 'Irish' Most British sports fans have no need to jump on the bandwagon of successful sports individuals and teams from abroad - the same cannot be said for many an Irishman, a good example being - 'Manc Red'

I totally agree with what you are saying Slighobhoy - politics should be kept out of it. However - if a fighter from Northern Ireland wins a British title and then goes on to cause a major upset in legoland then a fan of maybe a differing political bent to us says - 'hey - thats great for British boxing!' why should that cause offence? - especially if the fighter concerned fought for and won the British title.sligobhoy67 wrote:I am surprised at you Carlos to come out with nonsense like that.Carlos-Wigan wrote:It would help if Irish Catholics who of the nationalist bent (and nothing wrong with that) would stop fighting for British and Commonwealth titles - nearly every Irish Catholic top class boxer has fought for and won either a British or a Commonwealth title - I have no problem with the political view that Ireland should be united but how can an Irish catholic nationalist such as Darren Corbett or Eamonn Magee or Martin Rogan fight for the goddamn commonwealth title? Thank fuuck politics and boxing are kept very much separate in Northern Ireland. Fighters who ordinarily may never have spoken to each other are friends and the divide doesnt come into it as far as boxing goes. At amateur level boxers who consider themselves British fight for Irish titles and represent Ireland and European, World and Olympci levels but this does not make them any less British - they might get a little stick off their mates but I dout it is anything serious.
Neil Sinclair won a bronze for Ireland at the world juniors and Carl Frampton who is from the UDA stronghold of Tigers Bay is a two weight Irish amateur champion - its about being the best you can be are your choosen sport and using all avenues available to achieving your goal.
The same goes in the professional game - fighters like McCloskey, Kelly, Rogan, Magee all fought for British or Commonewalth titles because they a. want to win titles and b. because a British title will do far more for a fighters rankings on a European and World title level then an Irish title will and becuse the depth of competition at those levels is much deeper than at Irish level not to mention the financial aspect.
To a lesser degree it is like saying that an English fighter that supports UKIP shouldnt fight for a European title!
At least as boxing is concerned there is a grown up attitude.
line all three scousers up and let Magee take a pick of the best one. Then face another European challenge and straight to a world title shot.leforge wrote:Like to see Magee fight winner of Smith v Dodson.
