Cheers for the RBR Manc_Red :TU:
A great win on the road for the highly capable Irishman - he should see some good days off the back of this.
Magee is a skillful fighter and when he can protect his fragile whiskers, he is tough to beat.

Where do we see Magee going next? I was just looking at the EBU Ratings and there are a few nice fights in there.

EBU SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT RATINGS

1. Arthur Abraham [N/A]
2. Mikael Kessler [N/A]
3. Eduard Gutkneckt
4. Karol Balszay
5. Vitali Typsko
6. Stas Kashtinov
7. Paul Smith
8. Lorenzo di Giacomo
9. Lolenga Mock[EU Champion]
10.Medhi Bouadla

Wouldn't mind seeing Magee-Smith should Smith come through the Dodson fight. I can't see Magee travelling again for his first defense so that rules out Gutkneckt and Balszay. A rematch vs Typsko could also be on the cards.

He should rematch Typsko to avenge his loss. I think he would beat him handily this time.

Magee was a former underfeated British super middleweight champion was he not?

But if all that upsets you, why don't you just ignore him? Thats easy enough as well. :TU:

Watch Magee get forced to fight a dozen italians on the spin now, starting with Sanavia who gets a shot every 6 months at the title.

Isn't the EBU in Rome or somewhere? funny that eh..

It would help if Irish Catholics who of the nationalist bent (and nothing wrong with that) would stop fighting for British and Commonwealth titles - nearly every Irish Catholic top class boxer has fought for and won either a British or a Commonwealth title - I have no problem with the political view that Ireland should be united but how can an Irish catholic nationalist such as Darren Corbett or Eamonn Magee or Martin Rogan fight for the goddamn commonwealth title? Thats a joke right? Surely, the commonwealth title must be rather offensive for a nationalist Irishman to fight for?

It is a fact that Magee was an undefeated British champion and if he finds it so offensive to be labelled 'British' then why did he fight for the title? Does that make any sense to anybody?

I think most British boxing fans - including myself - are more that happy to proclaim every fighter who fights out of Ireland as 'Irish' Most British sports fans have no need to jump on the bandwagon of successful sports individuals and teams from abroad - the same cannot be said for many an Irishman, a good example being - 'Manc Red'

I am surprised at you Carlos to come out with nonsense like that.

Thank fuuck politics and boxing are kept very much separate in Northern Ireland. Fighters who ordinarily may never have spoken to each other are friends and the divide doesnt come into it as far as boxing goes. At amateur level boxers who consider themselves British fight for Irish titles and represent Ireland and European, World and Olympci levels but this does not make them any less British - they might get a little stick off their mates but I dout it is anything serious.

Neil Sinclair won a bronze for Ireland at the world juniors and Carl Frampton who is from the UDA stronghold of Tigers Bay is a two weight Irish amateur champion - its about being the best you can be are your choosen sport and using all avenues available to achieving your goal.

The same goes in the professional game - fighters like McCloskey, Kelly, Rogan, Magee all fought for British or Commonewalth titles because they a. want to win titles and b. because a British title will do far more for a fighters rankings on a European and World title level then an Irish title will and becuse the depth of competition at those levels is much deeper than at Irish level not to mention the financial aspect.

To a lesser degree it is like saying that an English fighter that supports UKIP shouldnt fight for a European title!

At least as boxing is concerned there is a grown up attitude.

I totally agree with what you are saying Slighobhoy - politics should be kept out of it. However - if a fighter from Northern Ireland wins a British title and then goes on to cause a major upset in legoland then a fan of maybe a differing political bent to us says - 'hey - thats great for British boxing!' why should that cause offence? - especially if the fighter concerned fought for and won the British title.

You raise a good point - most British boxing fans would consider Neil Sinclair and Wayne McCullough as Irish - or I do anyway.

Back when Barry McGuigan got British nationality so he could fight and win the British title - Harry Mullan heavily criticized him for the move saying it would alienate a community (did Mullans own prejudices come into it? - probably) In the end - it didn't. But my question remains - if a Irish nationalist from Northern Ireland fights for a title once referred to as the 'British Empire' title - can anybody moan if said boxer gets called Brit? Its no good moaning about politics if the boxer concerned ignores the political issues of fighting for such titles.

I try to keep out of the British/Irish debacles that sometimes plague this forum, coming from a very heavily populated Irish-Catholic community myself, I see Magee and anybody else who considers themselves Irish as Irish - and that includes Matthew Macklin, Gerry Cooney, Marcus Davis, Sean O'Grady, Billy Costello and Slugger O'Toole aka Fidel Castro Smith! :TU: and of course the great Muhammad Ali - you feckers were quick to claim him eh?

Christ lads,

keep politics out of boxing.

Let me tell you this....

in the sectarian hotpot that is northern ireland, boxing rises head and shoulders above any sport, ner any way of life as the most non-sectarian, most respected establishments over here.

Boxing should be very proud of that.

In fact when Magee was defending his ibo titles in belfast, it was common knowledge that "certain hard men" from both sides of the city came to watch him.

Thats quite a feat.

line all three scousers up and let Magee take a pick of the best one. Then face another European challenge and straight to a world title shot.

or just skip to Robert Stieglitz and bring the WBO title back to Belfast!!!

time is of the essence for Brian.
