Nah, this Mexican was handy, Munroe was too big. Lets give Munroe the credit, not many Super Bantam's bigger than him. I'm sure the Mexy would do well at world level against smaller Super Bantam's.

Munroe reminds me alot of Steve Robinson. Its so great to see a "grafter" achieving so much. Somone who fights to his full potential time and time again.

A really emotional interview, I was nearly choking up there - felt like a world title win. I really hope we can get the Jap here.

Jeffries was dreadful tonight. Points win, but poor.

Hopefully he will learn from this

Not at all, he needed to prove himself further after getting a questionable decision over Maludrottu and he done just that.

He'll almost certainly need to go to Japan to get the fight with Nishioka though, I can't see Maloney attempting a big bid and doing something like trying to out it on at the Walkers' stadium. Afterall the last big show he did(Moore v Rhodes) nearly bankrupt him as he says.

Also the fact that this was the first time Munroe was headlining an arena the size of 3,000 says that any attempt above 5-6,000 would probably be unrealistic. Does anyone know if the arena sold out(or nearly sold out) tonight btw, I know Munroe has had trouble filling smaller venues in the past but he's on a roll at the moment and boxing fans all over Britain seem to be getting behind him so I'd have expected it to be near capacity.

Full credit to Munroe. I had my doubts about him in this one but he came through. Still don't think he will good enough for Nishioka but he certainly deserves his shot.

Credit where its due Munroe did very well, he was 4-0 down for me after the first four and yet did not panic and just kept upping it, think it was round 7 when he had Terrazas on the ropes there was a little smile from him as he banged away, he knew then what we knew, the fight was over and it was just a matter of time.

Well done Rendall and well done FTM as well, a lot may have given up in getting Terrazas here with all the ash crap going on but everyone including Terrazas deserves credit here for making the fight happen.

i fail to see how munroe won a QUESTIONABLE decision over maludrottu.

malu was sharp early, munroe outworked him mid-fight, it was heated late but munroe was getting the better of it, then malu really hurt him in the last round. munroe was on his way to an 8-4 decision IMO but given malu won the last i had it 7-5 munroe.

that was a brilliant fight. good for munroe that this one wasn't as punishing.

i agree barn, for me Rendall-mala was one of those classic 'close but clear' jobs won in the championship rounds

you'd have liked the way Rendall was digging the body last night

the payoff shot, he does very well, he times your upperbody movement so when you are swaying to your left he sways in to your right and digs a long left hand round the corner to the liver. its an opening he works beautifully, and his right hook to the body's nearly as good as Rhodes's.

I'd certainly disagree with yee two regarding the Maludrottu decision, I had it 116-113(7-4-1) for the Italian and to be honest I was slightly embarrassed because I had predicted Munroe to win on points(luckily he still did). I've seen quite a lot of people on other forums score the fight for the Italian and a lot had a draw aswell, but there's simply no way in hell Munroe won 8 rounds.

Munroe dug himself a hole early like he normally does, only that time his opponent was able to compete throughout the fight and continue winning rounds. I think I remember Munroe winning quite a few of the middle rounds but Maludrottu come on strong again to take the fight.

I certainly feel the decision was questionable and I think if the fight was in Italy Munroe wouldn't just have lost he'd have been on the end of 118-110, 119-109 type scorecards.

agreed, i had it 7-5

so i think we basically disagree on two rounds, easily done.

Well I can accept 7-5 Munroe a lot, lot easier than I could accept 8-4 Munroe.
3 rounds actually as I had an even round(think it was somewhere early enough in the fight) aswell but I've no problem with anyone scoring that round to Munroe or Maludrottu as I myself couldn't separate them.

The difference in scoring probably comes from me feeling Maludrottu's punches were much harder and more effective, where as Munroe threw more but there was nothing really behind them. Some may have scored for Munroe on volume but I just didn't feel they were scoring effective punches, more like tipping little slaps(worse than Calzaghe).

Anyway there's not much point arguing it now because Munroe did get the decision and has since gone on to win a final eliminator so he will be getting his title shot. But what I certainly don't believe he deserved mandatory status without this final eliminator like Autobarn believes.
Maludrottu has never proved himself above European level and he had never really proved himself as a Super-Bantamweight(till that fight anyway), so I definitely feel Munroe had to prove himself further before getting his title shot and as I said earlier, fairplay to him because he's done just that.

I don't mean to give off the impression I dislike Munroe to anyone, he's a nice guy and has done things the hard way continuing to work while fighting at a very high level. I wish him all the best in his World title fight for which he'll likely have to travel and although I predict he'll be comprehensively beaten by Nishioka, I would like him to prove me wrong.

yes I agree with a lot or most of that BigEars, yes Munroe throws armpunches quite a lot, its something i think both myself and barn have been a little critical of, in the past.

i'm not either a 'i score proper punches over armpunches' or a 'i score volume and workrate over quality' type of scorer, i try and judge each round on its merits, and in the rounds where Munroe wasn't doing much more than 'moving his arms' with the shots i just, just (i think i had 2 really close rounds) thought he did enough to win them

i will say one thing Bigears, i wonder if Rendall's 'armpunches' have more effect than we would be able to properly judge from watching on TV

they obviously had a noticeable effect on the mexican's stamina last night. I'd like to be ringside for a Rendall fight sometime to get a better feel for the impact of his shots. he may not have a huge amount of snap to them but he's obviously a very very big strong boy and they have their effect.

the way he will work his right hand to the body, inside and then outside your left elbow, is very effective. and he's very clever at using his strength, getting into range to give you that little push off, muscle you to the ropes and on he goes like a train.

good chatting to you, as ever

:TU:

edit, another thing that may be worth thinking about, i wonder if Rendall has a slightly Abraham-esque approach to pacing a fight.

with Rendall his big equalizer is size and stamina rather than the bingo pucnh, but at times you can see him taking shots on his gloves and you know that the bloke throwing shots will be paying for them at some later point of inactivity. if you know what i mean. i don't think he will ever beat anyone 11 rounds to 1 over 12, his style doesn't cater for that and if it means his opponent using up energy he seems happy to 'give 3 or 4 away'.

I think more than it being a case that his arm punches are overrated it's that when he goes to the body he seems to put quite a bit more snap into his shots than when he goes for the head. He's a not a bad body puncher at all and most of his stoppages have come because of it.

I feel one of the major factors on how he saps peoples energy however isn't his punches at all it's his work on the inside where he bulls people to the ropes. Munroe is the only fighter I've ever seen really(who's not a heavyweight) who uses his size to sap peoples energy against the ropes. He leans all over them, pushes them, bullies them and you'll notice most of them spend a lot of time in a doubled up position(such as Terrazas did from round 5-9 anytime on the ropes), where he's getting even more leverage to lean on them and wear them out.

It's very smart stuff really and makes the most of his strength and size. I feel the reason Maludrottu didn't fade like most Munroe opponents was he was able to stay off the ropes much longer than the rest and didn't have Munroe leaning all over him for long periods of the fight.
It's for the same reason I think Munroe may struggle with Nishioka, he won't be able to trap the Japanese fighter onto the ropes for long periods of time and in the middle of the ring he'll be badly outboxed. I'd like to be wrong on that account, because I think any fighter Munroe can trap against the ropes(with the exception of maybe Poonsawat) he'd wear them down, get the better of them and win the fight.

The reason I say with the exception of Poonsawat is I think he's one fighter who'd still be able to land quality shots back while in that position, he has a great ability to get leverage into his shots even in clinches.

good points mate, kindof like Jeff Harding didn't get much or any leverage into his headshots but he did bend at the knees when he went to the body :TU:

couldn't agree more RE Poon and Nishioka who both i think unfortunately would massacre Rendall, his footwork isn't good enough for a world classs 122lber, IMO

:TU:
