ALL nations overrate their own people.
It's another level though if you see Filipino message boards. I rewatched Pacquiao vs Margarito with Pinoy commentary (for as long as I could bare) and it was like Pac never missed a punch and Margarito didn't hit him all night.

Hmmm... British commentary is pretty biased... Watch the commentaries on the pro fights of any of the American gold medalists in the 80s...

It's a pretty poor country. I think their love for Manny is totally understandable.

I think you guys need to calm down on this. You're living in the privileged and decadent west.

I'm calm, and I'm not having a go at them, just stating that their love for Pacquiao and bias isn't like any other boxer right now. British commentary isn't close to as biased.

Well it's only a given that people will tend to root for their countrymen because in the absence of knowing fighters personally, it's an easy thing to relate to, but with Pacquiao it's REALLY BAD. It's not just a small sect of his home fanbase that's delusional, it's the vast majority of it. Usually you'll find a certain degree of critique or cynicism in any fanbase (how many British fans regard Khan for instance), but a guy in the Philippines was actually stabbed for joking about how Manny couldn't KO Barrera in their rematch.

I heard the same thing on the HBO feed. Lampley is as biased as they come and he loves him some pac.

I agree with Diamond, Pac fans are the worst I've encountered. You can't even mention one thing about him without an avalanche of rage. In fact, they are so obsessed if you're not thrilled with his last few crap fights you're automatically a Mayweather fanatic. Doesn't matter if you mention him or not.

That being said, Roy's fans have a lot of longevity. I remember trying to convince them he had zero chance against Calzaghe.

Gents, having a band of fanatic followers does not mean you're overrated. It just means that the fans over-identify with the man.

Maybe the word overrated should be banned from forums like this? :??

Overrate just means that someone else has a positive opinion about a fighter that you might not agree with.

All opinions about a fighter's standing in the sport are subjective & open to interpretation, so there isn't really a right or wrong answer, because none of us truly know how fighter A would have fared against fighter B from a totally different era etc.

elmersalsa you need to make up your mind. In another thread you claim that Roy Jones Jr. could have been the greatest of all time, and now he is over-rated? Make up your mind.

To be honest I think Jones would have KO Duran if they ever fought.

What makes you say that? I can't think of any one besides Hearns that took out Duran. Hearns punching power is much greater than Jones Jr's. Duran was just as good as a defensive fighter as Toney was, except, he was a better offensive fighter (I'll say that Toney was superior in direct counters). The match-up would have to be at 154 (or at a catch-weight of 157), a weight Jones Jr. didn't really do anything at. If you put the match-up at 160, I think it's too much of a disadvantage for Duran. I'm sorry, but, that's an outrageous claim to say that Duran gets KO'd by Jones Jr.

I know it's just a sparring session, but, if you watch Duran spar w/Nigel Benn (a man who had more devastating power than Jones Jr.), Duran seemed to be very comfortable in there and was giving a good defensive account of himself (and threw in some good combinations as well). I really don't see what you're seeing with that statement.

Why does the fight have to be made at a catch-weight of 157? Remind me again on how many fights did Duran fought at a catch-up weight? Or you meant to say that you wanted the fight at 157 to benefit Duran? At 160, I strongly favor Jones over Duran. What is Duran best win at 160? According to many Duran was way past his prime by the time he got to 160 and that weight Jones did have plenty of power.

And please I hope this is the last time you bring up sparring as an example. I seen the video too and it meant absolutely less than nothing.

Dude, you told me Jones Jr. would have KO'd Duran. The fight can be at 160 - whatever. Duran just probably won't weigh 160. Who did Jones Jr. KO that was anywhere in overall skill as a 154-157 Duran? Dude . . . COME ON. You can't stand by that comment. You want to say he'd outpoint him, fine. But KO him? :witzend:
I stand by my statement Jones could have KO Duran if they ever fought. As great as Duran was a prime Jones at 160 would have been too fast and too strong for Duran period. I know Jones did not have the killer instinct but he had more than enough power at 160 to stop Duran at that weight class. Either way I see Jones winning by decision or TKO. :TU:

Roy would wisely be on the move against Duran, he wouldn't even try to KO him.

Every fighter is both overrated and underrated depending on who you're talking to. If you're not an idiot and you know the sport of boxing, you can decide for yourself.

Lennox Lewis
Riddick Bowe
Mike Tyson
Aaron Pryor
Salvador Sanchez.

Not to great degree, but to a minor extent.
