i think manchester is full of greatb trainers infact the best in the country in my opinion , evey fighter is suited to certain trainers , i have to say bob shannon is very underated and only just started getting recognition , i also like karl ince , and oliver harrison , ive worked with them all , haven worked with hughes , gallagher, or arnie but do no they are great in what they do

Humphrey was a bad ass wasn't he? Like a British Marvin Hagler - destruction and destroy.

I remember him annihilating Kash Gill in a muay thai match..

Kash 'the Flash'! He was talented but the thai lads were very well conditioned, aggressive no one kicked harder! I was into the martial arts in the 80's; the Harrisons were good; I bumped into the Armstrong brothers at Master Toddys' gym near the National Express station in Manchester. Sandy Holt was another very good one; I used to train with Phil Glover at Maltby baths; he was hard and looked like a quireboy.

farnell is a top coach workin wonders with his camp plus a top fella aswel and nose the game inside out already due to his experiance in the ring

All the trainers that have been mentioned I've herd good things about. I know how good arnie is having worked with him and he's defintly one of the best trainers in the country. I can't believe nobody has mentioned georgie vaughan, he's a great trainer knows the game inside out has loads of experinece and has the titles to prove it and many more to come!!

Yes I completely agree - Matthew Hatton has done fabuously well - some will argue overachieved.

I don't know much about the other trainers but I have been under a few over the years. I was working in Manchester for a few weeks a couple of years ago and I decided I would do a bit of trainning while I was there. I ended up in Shannon gyms just outside the city centre. I learned more in a few weeks with him than what I did with others in years. Maybe we just clicked, I don't know. He looks at your physhical make up and helps you to develop your style round it. His enthusiasm is great, he works hard with the guys and he makes sure you get at least ten minutes of his attention even if your not from his gym. Don't get me wrong I have disagreed with some of his comments to fighters in the corner but nobody is perfect.
I forgot to mention he works full time as well, painter & decorator I think.

Aye right mate, he took Kevin Anderson on and turned him into a slow, one punch machine, totally ruined the guy. Military trainng doesnt work for pro athletes, anyone who thnks differently does not know what they are talking about, simple

Define Military Training someone... I think they left that off my course.

Plenty of great trainers around gotta give Oliver his due, he has improved fighters and brought the best out in them like with Jamie Moore , Arnie, Ste Foster, Martin Murray etc great with studying and game plans, dont think anyone can say he is the best trainer due to there being so many good 1s and also its styles to, differents styles to different coaches!!

I agree with you there Mat, I think a fighter and a trainer that are on the same wave length will do better for each other. I think a coaches personality and knowing how to get the best out each figher is key. Patience is important to, you are good trainer pal I think you should get your pro trainers licence and do a bit.

jimmy tibbs is the best - also many unheralded guys like martin bowers, mark roe, mark tibbs deserve amention as well

I noticed a huge style change in Matthew Hatton, from watching his defeat to Craig Watson at the homecoming, to his first fight following that against Scott Woolford. Matthew seemed to add more parts to his game, turning his opponent, using a different approach.

I personally think he's regressed under Shannon. He fought the wrong fight against Nuzhnenko and when I saw him in the changing room on 'The Body Bag' i thought good grief.

Iv worked with a few diffrent guys and been round diffrent gyms and one guy who never gets mentioned because he is semi retired is a midlands guy called Ronnie Brown just watching this guy observe and comment what to do is an education .

Bob Shannon came in for the last couple of weeks of training with Matthew Hatton when he fought Khutsishvili, up until that time he had been training with Beard. The Branco fight was only taken with around 2 weeks notice. So the reality is that Matthew Hatton could not have learned a great deal in that time and was relying on his previous experience and more recently the work with Beard. His first full camp with Bob was for the fight with Yuriy Nuzhnenko a fight which a lot of people said Matthew looked bad in and it was a fight where he first tasted the canvas.

I aint trying to sell or undersell any of the trainers mentioned, just like people on forums to be clear on the facts.

One thing i truly believe tho is if Ricky Hatton does come out of retirement and uses Shannon he will get bashed good and proper
