Hasn't got a good word to say about the Calzaghe's. He got Enzo little cash jobs singing in restaurants back in those days when Cal snr didn't have two pennies to rub together, but that was soon forgotten when Mark lost his license.
Feels he was unprepared getting chucked into an 8 rounder vs Woods, and feels he was good enough to get title fights at light fly.
Always complained he was ignored in the gym as everything was geared towards Joe.
He also thinks that the local talent were just used as unpaid sparring partners and have been blindly loyal to Enzo, leaving themselves skint while the Cals counted the cash, he accused Enzo of being a terrible tightwad.
Clev has almost said as much

There was a the miniumweight guy about 7 a half stone who retired after about 50 fights unbeaten but don't remember a light welter???

Sorry to pick you up on your mistake but somebody would have done it anyway. Why did Ricardo Lopez retire anyway? Did he just get bored?

I think he just picked the right time, he'd already shown signs of decline, was knocking on and was short of big fights. Plus he went out on a win etc.

Kallum De’Ath (Manchester). Good amatuer, a few fights in the pros and gone. I think Arnie might have trained him ?

Rosendo Alvarez, he was pretty good but a big old lump for straw and just kept coming forward with hurtful punches. From memory Lopez was cut over both eyes and a bit bust up and it went to the cards. They had a rematch and without checking, it was another close run thing and Rosendo had weight issues (can't remember the exact details but think Alvarez was way over the straw limit) and both moved up in weight right after.
Both were quality fights, both very good fighters, Lopez the more technical.

I just looked up his incredible record 52 fights unbeaten with just that one draw, 26 title fights, over 3 weights. but your right he'd seemed to of had enough at the end only 5 fights in over 4 years. What a great record though - a Boxrec users wet dream

Yeah, definitely...he was the real deal though, great to watch but just hampered in getting big big fights and money by being tiny.
He benefitted from being on some huge DK cards and got some much deserved exposure in the US.

the american light welter? i met him at the olympics in Sydney, was really nice to chat to, said he was going pro after the games , won a silver. He got paid a big signing on bonus when going pro, blew it . Then decided to deal in coke, by sending it via Fed-ex!!
How surprising this idea got him 3 years inside. had a few comeback fights, but not heard anything in a while

He trained for a bit with some ufc fighters but really lost his way as a pro boxer after being massively hyped after turning pro.
He had a great style and heavy hands but couldn't dedicate himself and I think the pressure got to him.

There was a documentary about Benny May when he was still amateur. I think he was better suited to the amateur game; he seemed a very nice kid in the program.
Jemal Hinton retired for religious reasons when he was nearing a World Title shot.

Andrew Mclean.
He won the ABA title and then turned pro winning 4 bouts and then I heard it turned back to the amateur game.

There was a kid who showed tremendous promise in the amas and was very popular, can't for the life of me remember his name but he was latched onto very quickly by Manny Steward and groomed for big things but he liked a drink too much, even at an early age and drifted away from the sport and eventually died.

Martin Harley was a very good amateur; I don't think he ever turned professional. He pushed 'Blue Boy' Gallagher close but got his nose busted badly. The ref said he'd never seen a nose bleed like it. Harley didn't complain at all; he must've been a very tough lad.
Guy Wild was a top class amateur who didn't box professionally; he would've done well.

Mickey Driscoll was in one of my favourite fights (v Ross Hale); he had just about everything and I was disappointed that he didn't box again. The top men at light welter were passing the title around between them at that time. Driscoll would have at the very least held his own against Andy Holligan and 'Scrap Iron' Ryan (another of my favourites). I'm not sure he'd have won them all but he would have given it a proper go; Mickey Driscoll had bottle to burn.
