Jane, I never, ever went to see the UK Subs so you are lying again — like you do about all those girl world titles you claimed you won! However, I did lose my virginity to the girlfriend of the UK Subs bass player (and she was almost as scary as you), but that's another story.

Deffo the first issue of BM had Tyson on the cover, and whoever allowed that dozy Leonard pic to be a cover should be shot — oh yes, I remember, it was the bloke who drew it, who was also the editor at the time (for a Fleischer-like reign of one issue, I believe), Ian Probert.

Yes one of the best covers (the Tyson shot ) was followed by one of the worst, the Leonard horror show cover.

Just read this months and it's excellent, I must get a sub sorted now. Some excellent writing from Borges too.

Steve Lillis was wildly off the mark comparing Wlad/Chisora to Lewis/Vitali though ( as in a no hoper who went on to surprise everyone ). The Vitali/Lewis matchup must have been the best ever fight put together at 2 weeks notice. And I think everyone in boxing viewed Vitali as a very dangerous matchup for Lewis at the time. Whereas Chisora/Wlad is rightly seen as a complete mismatch.

Exshaw is probably a genius Datsue, if he says he likes something then it almost certainly is worth buying — he really does have encyclopedic knowledge of boxing books and films and he's not easily impressed, as you may have gathered. A great reviewer and a very funny man, to boot. He's been with us for yonks and hopefully will be for yonks more, the man's a legend. One day I'll put together a selection of my favourite Exshaw put-downs — and we'll probably never be sent anything for review again.

Glyn, get over it. I was 25-years-of-age and had just been been basically thrown into the job of editing BM because Steve Holdsworth had departed acrimoniously. I'd been a journalist for less than a year. I did the cover not for any type of personal gain but because I simply wanted to do something different. So it was crap – big deal.

And, as you well know, it was not I who allowed the picture to be the cover, it was Edward Crawshaw. I didn't have that amount of power. So if it's still irking you two decades later that you're prepared to start slagging me off on internet forums then you'd better have me shot. I'm sure that you've never made any mistakes during your glorious reign as BM editor.

And as for your sarcastic 'Fleischer-like' quote: perhaps you've forgotten that I agreed to take on that role for for one issue only while they found a permanent editor. I never had any ambition to edit a trade magazine and never will.

Apologies Ian, it's not as though I have ever had any problem with you either, nor do I now. And I've got nothing to get over, the subject of 'that' cover was raised on this thread and I responded to it. It's not as though I raised it or had even thought about it for years — I try not to, for God's sake! (That last comment was made in humour, by the way, it seems I should point such things out.) Didn't dream it was something you'd be so sensitive about, sorry that it's obviously caused you such great offence. But we have less than glorious moments in our pasts, myself included, and frankly I think it's best to laugh them off - as you imply, we were all young and less experienced once and there's really no harm in accepting as much. Best to hold your hands up and say 'yep, I did that' and laugh them off I think. Life would be very hard if you couldn't laugh at yourself.

As regards, you being shot, you know full well that's a metaphorical statement Ian, as does everyone who read it. It's a commonly used term that bares no relation to wishing physical harm to anyone, let alone shooting them — but to make myself perfectly clear, I definitely wish no physical harm to you nor do I think people should actually have shot you! OK? Turn of phrase Ian, and you know it. But apologies if it offended you.

Fleischer-like reign? What of it? It's sarcastic but true, and sarcasm, while the lowest form of wit according to some, is indeed a form of humour - which I, for my sins, enjoy greatly, whether it's directed at me or otherwise. But the fact is everyone in that era of the magazine's history was in and out of the job with rapidity, the editor's seat was like a revolving door. A ridiculously unstable situation and through no fault of any of the editors involved, from what I remember. You all had Fleischer-like reigns, and some of you laugh at that description (this I know because I've seen it).

My comments on this subject were made in humour, but you appear to have taken them literally Ian. No malice was intended, nor do I feel any towards you now - despite, I'm told, you apparently having referred to me as something like 'inherently cheap' in your book! I'm not the sort to worry about such things. Life's too short. I laughed when it was mentioned to me. I find it easy to laugh at myself and I think that's healthy.
