One fighter I thought was going places was Pat Leglise.

I saw his great fight with Jeff Malcolm (on tape) and was looking forward to see who they would put him in with next.

They chose the dangerous American Charlie "Choo Choo" Brown who looked to be on the slide and a win against him would look good on Pat's record.

Unfortunately, Brown destroyed him. It looked like man against boy stuff.

DB, Thanks for the info the other day mate, i have done that, it works wonders, now while i cannot see or read the gooses posts, i assume he is again trying to hijack this thread and cause a blue, typical and it was only a matter of time, as i said, he cannot help himself and i am seriously concerned at his mental state, all the grog, fags & drugs have no doubt taken their toll.

As i've said in here previously, the bloke is just no good, he is not happy to simply contribute to a thread with good constructive comments, his replies are always denigrating, sour, bitter or negative towards something or someone, but don't be fooled, this is a concious decision by this grubby troublemaker.

My simple advice to you, is what you gave me, just list him as a foe, that way you don't have to see or read his drivel and baited replies, this thread was going well and was getting really interesting with good contributions from solid supporters of our sport and people who saw some of our best fighter's live in the flesh, or were around in the early days and fortunate enough to see some of our past greats, they also appreciate others who know a bit about boxing.

Now, because he's not being included, and is left out again, his jealousy overcomes him, because he knows very little other than the gossip and inuendo he hears secondhand, because he has nothing constructive to contribute, he then feels it's time to destroy a thread and turn it into a sh*t fight by baiting someone to cause an argument, it's not just with me, but anyone who dares support me or even joins me in a thread.

Hey guys, some free advice, if your'e sick of this trouble maker and his petty little issues, Just go into user control panel, select his name, click foe and never be bothered by this idiot again, that was the best advice i got, and the best advice i can give anyone.

Cheers,
Brad Vocale

Saw Lionel Rose destroy Rocky Gattellari live at the Stadium and can always remember his younger brother: Lucky screaming as the ko'd Rock was carried back to his corner "morto, morto" . Lionel a true champion!

Also saw Paul Ferrari and Tony Mundine at the "Rocky Arvo" imbroglio. Paul was tough and courageous and Tony, still carried a terrific punch even into the final rounds (just ask Bunny Sterling). Remember no local ever beat Tony.

Yet there was one fighter I saw live, who could have gone all the way and I reckon could have taken Tony (although he was a division lighter) was Charkey Ramon. Charkey had the upper body of a middle-weight and a devestating punch. His early retirement due to injury was a cruel fate.

Beltane, I was in Townsville in November to referee some fights at Lavarack barracks, when i walked in, guess who was there as a guest, yes Charky Ramon, aka David Ballard, he is a terrific bloke and i have known him a long time, and get along really well, His Missus's mum lives up that way, so he was up there for a break.

Gees, he still looks fit as well, funny, the the last time i saw him was at Taylor v Mundine in Wollongong, I see him roughly once or twice a year, he often get's to the fights, he is still very approachable and loves to chat about the old days, he would have given a lot of blokes problems in his day, with his mental strength, his power and never say die attitude, Also, he wasa pretty fit bloke.

I hope i'm not speaking out of school here, but you may recall he had some problem's with the law in his job as a union rep in the building industry i think it was, Charky told me in Townsville he's beaten them and won the case, he apparently was always in the right, and now will recieve some huge compensation.

I stand to be corrected on this, it's just from what i can remember and was told.

Hey, i just checked his record, gee i never realised it was this impressive, 33-1-1 with 21 Ko's I remember he defeated a mate of mine from Melbourne, a rugged Southpaw named Les Paynter, when you look at his record, he was a good fighter,
just click on the link for a gig and see what you think: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

whaqt about the photo taken with five of the Commonwealth Champions, can you recall who they were?

Tony Mundine, Charkey Ramon, Bobby Dunne, Paul Ferrari and Henry Nissen,

Henry Nissen was another highly underated fighter, we fought Golden Gloves together along with his brother Leon, I sparred heaps of rounds with him at Peter Read's gym in Amess street North Carlton, I actually sparred him for the weeks prior to him fighting my cousin Harry Hayes, he beat Harry for the Australian flyweight title.

another bit of useless trivia to read, ha-ha.

Cheers,
Brad

Ditto, I also thought for a while that Leglise would go far on the international stage. Yeah, Choo Choo pole-axed him and that was the end of that. "ouch" just thinking about that nasty KO

Lester Ellis....he KO'd Leglise (after Brown did) and also KO'd another fella who I put in same league as Leglise. That was Dale Artango. Shane Knox was another one that looked good although he simply disappeared off the face of the boxing earth. He was undefeated in about 20 fights at the time :?? Mark Janssen...same as Knox :??

Quite often down here there seems to be too large a gap between Oz title holder level for example, and world class. Maybe our fighters should start looking at Commonwealth titles again

You don't have to win a Commonwealth title to prove you can fight against world class fighters because some of the Commonwealth champs these days aren't World class.
You have to fight good fighters ,then some average imports and then the better fighters to get the experience to take on the World champs.

Speaking of Commonwealth Champions, does anybody else remember the job Big Jim West did on Henry Nissen when he beat him for the Commonwealth Flyweight Title? Jim was a nice little bloke. Shame nobody taught him to read and write.

Last I heard he was living in a Department of Housing flat in Miller.

Patron, Yes i knew Norm always went to the Newcastle reunions, he was always a smiling and jolly bloke, he was a terrific matchmaker as well, also considering at that time, he had plenty of fighter's to work with, but there was also lots of politics between Dick Lean Jnr and the Australian Boxing Federation (ABF) i think it was, then a little later Channel ten come on board and got quite a few of the Stadiums boys on their cards, they had the support of the recently retired Ben Brizzi, even Harry hayes fought for channel 10 as well, yes there was some pretty good stoushes outside the ring as well in those days.

Mate the Bobby Murdoch youre referring to was a Light Heavyweight then, He was from Geelong, a rugged and hard southpaw, bobby fought TV Ringside around the same time as i just started, but he had been fighting a lot earlier than i did, I'm not sure whether it's the same Murdoch who went to the 56 Olympics, I knew there was another Murdoch, who went to the Olympics, but i'd never met or even seen him, I may ring Bobby and find out, now that you've got me interested.

Bobby Murdoch's son Paul was a decent fighter in recent times, I called a couple of his fights in Melbourne for Fox, he was a former PABA Champion and was managed by Frank Martinez in NZ, he also challenged for the Australian Cruiser title but lost to Daniel Rowsell, Paul lost his last fight to Danny Green in Melbourne when Greeny bowled him over in the second round, He retired after that. I have not spoken with Bobby Senior for a year or so, he's a good bloke and a real straight shooter.

I am glad you agree with me about George Barnes, I know that most people who met him liked him and he really was a good man, I'll try and find when he passed away, for the love of me, i cannot remember what year it was.

All the best mate

Brad

Although not Aussie born Fammo was the best I have seen fight in Australia, his defensive skills and his left hand were unbelievable.Did not see Lionel Rose live but what a great fighter he was. Tony Mundine is right up there. Once saw Barry Micheal give Steve Aczel a boxing lesson in a spar at Reg Laytons gym. Big weight differance but Barry gave him quite a touch up.I have had a lot of involvement with World title fights and yet to see anyone with the skills that Fammo HAD.

WOMEN BOXERS? GO AWAY, GIRLS!
So said the old Fighter Mag 32 years ago. In those days, men were men and some still thought a pansy was a flower!

Despite a battle with authorities over the years, women's professional boxing fought on to be accepted in the industry, media and by promoters. We even have lady wrestlers in the Commonwealth Games these days and lady weight-lifters have been around for years.

Kylamy, cant thank you enough for sharing your experiences mate, truely amazing. People dont seem to discuss the era as much as they should, people harp on about the "golden era" of NYC, while refusing to accept we had a golden era of our own.

"ref" hope you keep posting mate, interested in hearing what you've seen

patron, always been a big fan of your posts mate, very much interested in your opinions on the old days (esp on the Newcastle boys), hope you start a thread one day.

Ref,

I knew Rod (Big Red) he actually started refereeing in 1994, same time as i did, but then he just disappeared and we never saw him again, good bloke and a funny man, Is he still around in Brisbane? if so, what's he doing these days?

If you happen to see him, pass on my best to him, he was another straight shooter who disliked the "old boys club" who run "the ANBF Qld" probably more the reason he did not go on with officiating, cos he wasn't too bad at it either.

Tinnie, It's always good to share golden olden times with other supporters of our sport, As you know, we are few on the ground these days.

Yes i am blessed to have met some of the people i have, while not in the big league and never was, i have had some truly memorable experiences and met some fantastic people in our sport, not just in Aus, but the world over.

Ditto boys,

I love them and when a youngster, could not wait for the day when the latest fighter was in the newsagents, i used to read the print off the page, do you remember the one, Dec 69 or Jan 1970, where my cousin Harry Hayes was on the front cover, and it read "into the socking 70s"

Also, the very first edition of Fighter mag, the cover had a photo (head shot) of Lionel and said something along the lines of "Rose takes on the world" and you see Slim holding a globe, note on one of his fingers, thumb i think had a band aid, hows that for a memory, that's how much i was into Fighter magazine.

I remember meeting the Editor, Mike C Ryan for the first time at the Channel 9 studios in Bendigo st Richmond while there to fight on Golden Gloves, He went to his car and gave me a few copies, gees i cherished them like anything.

Call me strange and weird, i don't mind, but they were the best times, i was all of about 12 or 13 years old.

Cheers,

Brad

Brad, the last time I saw Big Red he was driving a taxi. Cant recall him ever refeering, he used to attend the State branch meetings, but I never saw him referee.

The best amateurs that I ever saw and refereed were Doug Sam and Norm Stevens. Doug was so technically correct, would have made a great trainer. Normy was not as effective in the professional ranks as he was as an amateur. He did have a lot of trouble with cut eyes though. He was a World class amateur.

Katsidis, when he went to London and smashed up Graham Earl.

He came with a big reputation and more than lived it up to. He made a fan of me that night and I continue to be.
