No.
NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:Wishing his next fight would "backfire on him".....just for having the temerity to chance his arm at 32 grand for a night's work. Very harsh is that mate.
I want him to lose for his team's choice of Truscott for his next opponent.
I don't see why it is harsh to want to see a boxer lose a fight, someone has got to lose. Why shouldn't I hope Truscott wins?
NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:He has every right to go for that Prize and as British champ it made good sense to do so. Going up against the like of Choi, Matthews, Buckland.....hell, virtually anybody that boxed that night, knowing he'd box 9 rounds max for a good chance at 32k and you have a go at the lad for "discrediting the British title" of all things. What does he get for defending that?? 10 grand? 15 grand on a good night?
I don't blame him for entering PrizeFighter but, because he was knocked out by Buckland, he should have made the next defence of his title against him. Instead it looks like he is taking a weak voluntary against Truscott.
Until Sykes beats Buckland, he lacks credibility as champion.
total nonsense. Buckland knew the title wasn't on the line and so did Sykes. They boxed for a tin pot and 32 grand over a (scheduled) frenetic 3x3 minute rounds. That ain't even
close to the Championship distance. Sure, I'm not saying a fight between the 2 of them wouldn't be interesting but let's keep PF regarded as what it is. It has fck all to do with the British title and to say that entering it
discredits the British title is basically discrediting Gary Sykes becoming the Champion of Great Britain in the first place.

For his own credibility as British champion he should want to avenge his 1st round knockout by Buckland. If he doesn't want to then that is up to him, but I won't have much respect for him as British champion unless he does rematch Buckland.

Entering PrizeFighter might not discredit the British title, but the British champion getting knocked out in a round does.

Sykes has to fight Buckland and until he does his position as British champ is shaky, and i say that despite liking the way Sykes does his business. He provides decent action fights and seem a nice fella when i've heard him interviewed. But he needs to face Buckland again asap.

Some nonsense on here, Northeast you are spot on with your objective points.
First of all, PF was at 9 6, so not even at SF so the detractors points are totally irrelevant. If Manchester United lost a 5-A-side competition (as they have done in the past) do we strip them of the championship, have they discredited themselves?
Carl is on Gary's radar, may happen as soon as March the 5th according to Wake up. So is Buckland, should he make SF again. Horse 'hopes' Gary loses for choosing Truscott so in effect every champion in every fight should face the best opponent out there with no in-betweens? Makes great sense that, within 6 months there would be no fights anyone would want to see, we'd have seen them all!
Gary Sykes won the belt in March 2010 and the Board did not mandate a challenger until February 2011! What is Sykes supposed to do, I'd really love your views on this? He has to earn a living, so he opted for PF and now Truscott until the Board give a deadline for Carl or other. Gary Sykes for 11 months and his team have waited for a mandatory challenger, so he has ducked no one, no one.
In terms of Gary Buckland, he has yet to make his intentions clear, there was talk of him fighting Foster at one point. Until he targets Sykes and makes a run at the SF title, give Sykes a break.
Carl Johanneson has had 3 years to make a challenge to get "his belt" back, but instead has prefered to play at being a figher and not been below 9 12lbs. So now he decides he is ready, Sykes has to drop all his existing plans and fight Carl straight away? How does that work?
I understand Carl now wants Sykes and he'll get him, April or May (unless the Board say March 5th) but at the end of the day you are condeming Gary Sykes when everything is beyond his control.
He is a fighter, will fight the best. In 12 months if he hasn't faced these guys then come on here and say what you are saying, but until then he has done everything the Board have asked of him.
He can do no more.

I don't see how my points are totally irrelevant.

I didn't say he had to fight the best available contender as a voluntary, did I?

He should have made a voluntary defence.

Has Sykes' team attempted to make a Buckland fight?

Why shouldn't Sykes fight Johanneson on March 5th if Johanneson can make that date?

& as boxing fans we all know that every fighter faces the best every time they box & no champions have ever made easy defences? Bollocks!
When Buckland wins a few within the SF weight limit then IMO he deserves a shot at Gary.

That maybe the case, but he holds that stunning first round KO win over the current British champ and he's certainly well worthy of a shot at Gary's title. He's not some journeyman or mere novice who just landed a bolt from the blue but had never done anything previously to justify a crack at the British title. Buckland gave a very credible showing against John Murray at 135, so prior to flattening Sykes he'd previously demonstrated his worth.
If he can make super-feather then he's a perfectly legit opponent for Gary Sykes, and i would think Sykes himself would burn for the chance at revenge.

Do Carl's side know that Chris? Because they say it is. I'll call you and Gary tomorrow to find out the score.
