it aint hard to go your local pro gym offer to help & then get a seconds license & start helping corners handing up etc.you see how it's done. you need swab's adrenalin,vas,iron press, it is pretty much common sense applying pressure & adrenalin etc then brush over the vas in a way the ref wont realised it is lumped on.
you get house seconds who look after journeymen who only have the trainer etc. so you soon pick it up

Lefty you have beaten me too it! I would like to put myself out there for anybody involved in the business thats prepared to listen.
I have done some of the journalistic side of things but would like a different sort of involvement in the sport not afraid to get my hands dirty and would offer my services free of charge

I am in Nottingham/Liverpool at the moment but would be prepared to travel to Manchester/Sheffield like Lefty not especially looking for anything paid but would like a foot in the door to get an insight into things work behind the scenes. Help out at shows in a gym at the weekends anything really.

Write to the BBBoC and offer your services to them, you will be invited to an interview with your area Council and asked a few questions. Tell them your passion of the sport and that you would like to be considered as an official. You can become a full inspector in a year and a ref in about 2 depending on how many shows you can attend and how quick you pick things up.

Whether you are a fighter, promoter, manager, trainer or Tea Boy boxing is a mad mad world.

The "apprenticeship" is sometimes a long one - I started off by going to the Army Boxing gym where I knew Julius Francis was training for the Mike Tyson fight - vritually went to every session he was at the gym - Frank Maloney then asked if I wanted to come up and have a minor part in the team - what an experience that was - then Frank asked me to do driving jobs here and there, at literally loads of shows including Lennox Lewis v Francois Botha. Then Frank went to work for Mr W arren and I did a couple of driving jobs for him there including working on the Full Monty 2 show - then went across to Hennessy Sports and did similar things there.

I then started to work for Fight Academy - thats where I was allowed to poke my big fat nose into a little bit more by making sure things Inner Ringside ran smoothly like dealing with The Press, TV and the VIP guests - been to Vegas, Monte Carlo and all over the UK - also did one show for Hayemaker Boxing its been a truly fantastic priveledge which has been a boxing fans dream.

I doubt very much you will get a job in the sport which will earn you a living - but you may get a chance to get a wonderful insight into the sport which will make your hair curl. I have been fortunate to do this but I am tired now and my job no longer allows me to do what I used to get up to - but wow what a time.

People often poke fun at my "Tea Boy" duties - if it were merely that I doubt I would have got to Vegas twice, Monte Carlo a couple of times as well as numerous world title shows - I consider my involvement which is coming to a slow end as something I will remember for the rest of my life.

Good luck to you Lefty - its a truly fantastic sport and the more you can poke your nose into it the more it draws you in.

And Spud got to nearly kill Yuri Baranov.....that was an experience .....

What a lovely post and I can't think of any reason for anyone to poke fun at 'tea boy' duties as anything other than sour grapes and jealousy.

It makes me happy that a proper fan has been able to have the chances to do it, it must have taken some knackers, hope lefty gets the same breaks.
