I like Smith and am generally favorable of the SKY team.

I find Adam's delivery a bit strained at times but he seems to love the sport andthat's what counts.
whenever he is asked his opinion on the outcome of a fight or the the future of a prospect he always turns to Johnny. "What do You! Think!" a bit scared of getting it wrong .
I'm being overly critical if he keeps working to get fights shown and pushing Sky's position to the right fights getting made he's doing a good job.

Dont care if the guy has a privaleged background or not, or contacts etc.

He is still a sh!t commentator with a terrible commentary and interview (post fight ringside, especially) voice.

BUT he is a boxing fan and does enjoy the characters, the bow tie and suit nights of championship fights. Good to have him onboard although, Piper and McGuigan need to go.

I think more of it has to do with Barney being a boxing fan, as he really does call the shots, so maybe we should be thanking him, in all honesty?

Still nobody has accused him of being a good commentator, a job he has had 20 years to get right!

Overall I think he's doing a decent job, BUT I could punch him sometimes when he starts talking over or interupting guests on Ringside or when he asks ridiculous questions.... such as asking John Murray "which punches hurt the most, the ones you take in the ring or the ones your brother takes?"

McGuigan is the best on there. Him talking about Foster this week was one of the most insightful, honest TV pundit bits I have seen

Without sidetracking the thread too much, I have to say I disagree.

I can't stand McGuigan. The guy states the blatantly obvious and thinks nothing of back tracking when he is wrong.

I know people will disagree but Jim Watt is 10x better at calling the fights and spotting changes as the fight progresses. Just a better all round pundit, imo.

Watt's main drawback is he appears a bit drab, in comparision.

I guess its down to personal preferance, though

Ed Robinson has really grown on me recently and I think he is a real boxing man who can relate to the fighters. I think Ringside would be much better without Adams insensitive comments and poor insights.

c'mon pal it was foster snr who seemed to be in a truculent mood. You cant blame smith for that who was nice enough. Foster admitted at the end he had an axe to grind with skys coverage of his son. If anything it was nelson who was stupidity and crassness personified when he asked foster snr if he put any input into his sons career and foster snapped "yeah i manage him, i chose his opponent" and than 2 seconds later nelson goes "so steve u ever thought of getting back in the gym giving guidance to boxers of today"......foster is like "yeah i train my son in the gym"! Lol

i think smith is doing a bang up job, to be fair, a far better job than his predecessors. I get the impression the whole sky team are real boxing fans who want the sport to do well on tv. I cant see where the gripes are coming from. Wheres the praise?

For the first time in a long while it feels like boxing is on a come back in the UK.

There has been a fair bit of praise in other threads, especially for Ringside and for the "new" regime's enthusiasm for the sport. It's just looks like productions are going a bit OTT, which many are going to wonder if that is at the expense of buying fights in. Doniare - Montiel and Hatton-Alvarez not being covered is not good.

Yep,Foster snr was blatantly rude.Perhaps he does not like Nelson after the way he treated his close pal Thompson?

Smith is a good guy. The sport needs more guys like him.

We can all moan about the privileged classes but these are the people boxing needs to bring back to the sport. After all it was originally a sport where the wealthy paid to watch the underclass fight. Broadsheet coverage is all but gone and when you do get it the writers almost apologise for their lack of insight. The sport needs to attract more white collar fans and youngsters.

McGuigan is excellent at assessing a fighter’s strengths and weaknesses.

Watt is the master of recognising momentum shifts in a fight.

i give a "fuckster" mate, i love boxing, been brought up with it, i am also a working class lad from up north who worked his balls off to go to uni, get a degree and find out that trying to have a career in journalism was nigh on impossible unless you had connections. you dont benefit from having connections when you're from a council estate in sheffield..so i want to know if the bloke who has such a prominent position regarding the coverage of the sport I love, is an ok dude or just a posh little toff with a bad attitude and a ponchant for nepotism...problem is journalism, TV etc is rife for nepotism, possibly the most inbred industry aside from the medical arena...I admit that my first impressions of Smith were that he was a toff who needed a slap, its a symptom of where I am from, my background, we are supposed to resent posho's born with a silver spoon in their mouths, therefore I need to learn more about him would make me feel better if he is a true boxing fan who has a passion for the sport..

fornicate Adam Smith! He's not a true boxing man! He is a man who got into it to get a foothold in his media career. I'll tell you a story, I had a mate of mine who was going to box in Ireland - this was about 1996. he was promised that he was going to be shown on sky so we all tuned in. My pal is a tough guy but unfortunatley - his fight was being commented by Adam Smith the fornicating tube! And he was really disrespectful - this posh, stuck up twat wouldn't last a round with my mate but there he was being really nasty whilst we were all listening back home to Adam Smiths uneducated shite and my mate had no right of reply because you know and I know and Adam Smith knows he has no fornicating idea what the fornicate he is on about but he is paid to broadcast his very meagre boxing opinion across the land so it is OK. So I am using my public voice to say he is a pudendum on here and I know 25 million times more about boxing than he ever will so if I want to say it I will! And I'll tell you another thing as well - when Deserter voiced his knowledge about him at uni - it all made sense. So there you go - shoot me!

I am hearing the usual defenses of him being a nice guy who loves the sport, but still no one has accused him of doing a good job!
It was his dad who got him the job despite him having no experience or love of the game at that point. Furthermore after 20 years in the job his progress has been limited.
I will still say though he is so much better in the studio than as a commentator, but there are precious few jobs which give people so much longitude for so little.

The guy knows his stuff well enough for me and presents well. I've been impressed with the way he handles interviews - eg thought he did very well with Paul Ingle. I like him and do not care that he is not an ex pro or otherwise from the streets. I want to see what he does with his new remit.
