How big's the field and are we at opposite ends of it? And is it a field we all have permission to actually be on in the first place? Indeed, context counts.
Funny you should mention a field. John Fury said he would have killed Henry Akinwande had they fought in a field. Unfortunately for the convicted eye-gouger, it was in a ring and he was iced in three rounds.
Whether the men exchanged the 'p' and 'n' words, sadly, isn't known.

After he got pasted, John paced around the ring, leaned over the top rope and yelled 'I'm a gypsy man! I'm a gypsy man!' at the crowd over and over again. At no stage did he refer to himself as a 'pikey', therefore the term may be perjorative.

There is some stereotypical bs going on in this thread
Lads Let me clarify I am a true Romany gypsy ...and using the words Pikey or gyppo toward one of our kind, be it Irish or Romany traveler it is very offensive and can be likened to calling a black guy ni66er, most people that use it do so knowing full well how offensive it is ...if you know full well and been told how offensive a word it is, then why carry on using it ? Like i said i think its more a reflection on the people that use it ..rather than me or my ethnic culture ;;-)

Mr P, help us out: As a Romany do you consider yourself different to an Irish traveller, or is a gypsy a gypsy, end of. There is a fair deal of racism among black people, Africans towards West Indians and vice versa, and I'm wondering if there's anything similar in the gypsy world.

Well a Romany just described himself as such Freddy so I presume not. Or is it like black people being allowed to use the N word while whites are not? Mr P?

I've a traveller acquaintance and he calls me a Gorger. Is a 'Gorger' descriptive of my status or is in insulting of my upbringing and culture?

Hang on...is 'gyppo' in the mix now? I thought we were just on about 'the p word'. Is 'gyppo' just as bad?

i will refrain from use of the 'p' word from now on.

I come from a town with a large 'settled traveller community'. 'Gorger' is a widely used term for a non-traveller. I must admit, the travellers who employ the term don't really seem too concerned whether non-travellers are offended by it. I suspect if someone was, and it was pointed out to said traveller, they would immediately rectify their behaviour and never use it again.

surely a 'settled travellers community' should be referred to as 'settlers'??

We were told at the paper to say "thought showers" or "blue sky thinking"
I just walked out at that point...
PS Mr Pedigree - We're told to use "traveller" rather than gypsy or pikey (obviously) but why are they called travellers when the furthest they travel is a stroll across the site they've been parked on for the last 25 years? Or Appleby horse fair :)

Yes; I'm sure they'd consider how insulting and hurtful they had been, consider their ways and decide to change their behaviour and words with more consideration.
