Fall match with Pavlik ;)
An alcoholic middleweight who has seen better days was not the step up I was hoping for!!!

Shame really because he could be involved in some exciting fights, unless of course there is a reason for not facing the top guys...Golovkin switched him off good and proper in the ams. I want to see Bute under fire, see how he reacts.

What other top opponent do you have in mind for 2011? Froch and Ward have their match , Kessler turned the match down . Abraham is past ... who do you want ? Glen Johnson ?

Did anyone notice they literally pressed pause on the tape when Buffer got drowned out ?

Lucian executed a perfect exhibition, but JP Mendy had no right to challenge for a title. He was utterly demolished by Bika in a round and unfortunately Bika continued to chuck leather once he'd hit the deck and got DQ'd.

I grew tired of waiting for an opponent for Bute in 2007. Here we are 4+ years later asking the same question.
Do you think he is not as good as the undoubted number one Andre Ward, mate?

Oh dear, I was gona put a bet on Bute in rounds 1-6 at about 13/8 odds. Couldn't be mithered sorting it out putting money in my Bet365 account.

As I said earlier in the thread, if Mendy only got here because of a DQ when Bika had chinned him in 1 round, then it didn't exactly bode well for Bute. A massively overmatched opponent with no world ranking and nothing on his record above and beyond average fighters, French level opponents, lower euro level at absolute best and that's being kind. It really is time for Bute to stop coining it in with crap defences and step up to the plate and fight some of the real contenders - Froch, Ward, Dirrell, Kessler, even Abraham, Johnson and Green would be a step up from what he's faced.

Johnson would be a much tougher fight yes, as would Abraham. What about Dirrell, who I would back heavily to beat Bute...see, there are 3 names he could face.

It's disappointing because he has talent but he seems to be wasting it for some reason.

As mentioned above, the same questions about him being asked 3-4 years ago are still being asked. Is there a reason why it is taking so long to fight the best? I pointed out the Golovkin fight. Could it be they don't have complete faith in his chin?

Well for now there's nothing else to do . The fight with Pavlik is set on Nov 05.

Mmm let me see if his record tells us anything.

Jean Paul Mendy - At native Home
Brian Magee - At Home
Jesse Brinkley - At Home
Edison Miranda - At Home
Librado Andrade - At Home
Fulgencio Zuniga - At Home
Librado Andrade - At Home
William Joppy - At Home
Alejandro Berrio - At Home

Yep, he's fought nobody of note - and all of which he has been the massive favourite on home soil.

There's a reason why he looks a million dollars, but his opponents are a million peso.

Another predictable mismatch for Bute

I wonder why his team didn't try and petition the IBF about the credentials of Mendy as a mandatory challenger?

Would have loved to have heard what Froch had to say had he been extended eight or ten rounds

Fair enough. Boxrec have it listed as in the USA too. I'll wait for the official announcement but looks positive. Even with the problems he has had Pavlik will be Bute's toughest opponent.

Pavlik has been dire for a long while James.

Did you see his last fight? he was woeful.

He was almost as bad as his own body art.... almost.

Yeh Pavlik is starting to look like a man who has shot his bolt at the top level, given his best and now on the steady decline sadly. Motivation seems to be his major obstacle now, I don't think he will ever recover the form and momentum of his earlier career of a few years ago.

But wouldnt anyone continue to fight at home if they were popular in their home country? He even gets t.v deals... Also, i thought Magee was one of your favourites.

sad thing is mickey i genuinely think Bute has the talent to do well at elite level

though as some have said on here before, he looks like he is draining a fair bit to get to 168....

I do agree with you, but here's a nice comparison....

Whose record over the same period following his capture of a World title reads as follows....?

Chris Eubank - Neutral (as much as Sheffield is neutral for fighters from South Wales and London)
Branko Sobot - At Home
Juan Carlos Ferreyra - At Home
Robin Reid - Neutral
Rick Thornberry - At Home
David Starie - At Home
Omar Sheika - At Home
Richie Woodhall - Neutral
Mario Veit - At Home

Calzaghe then went on to fight McIntyre, Brewer, Jiminez, Pudwill, Mitchell, Mgkertchian, Salem, Veit (again) and Ashira before facing another world titlist despite there being up to 3 around all the while. Bute has a way to go before he reaches the Calzaghe level of competitive avoidance.

Fair enough at the moan of his previous opponents, and while Kelly Pavlik isn't that great - there isn't much else in terms of the available talent. 42 year old Glen Johnson?, Arthur Abraham (0-3 in his last 3), Dirrell has been out of action for 18 months, Ward and Froch are unavailable.... Kessler seems to be going for Steiglitz.

Pavlik is perfectly acceptable.... had Froch been facing Pavlik and not Johnson there would be no criticisms.

Joe is Welsh, so there could be an argument that all fights in England against Englishmen were not neutral. And he boxed Starie in Manchester!

I suppose the one thing with Bute is that he actually appears to be building toward a major fight.... taking on opponents with different styles and skillsets etc.

Calzaghe's career really went nowhere from 1997-2005, just endless, meaningless defences. It's the one major criticism of Allegedly, that he produces champions but very few stars. Look at Burns, dethrones a solid (if slightly overrated) champion and since then has been on the milk run.

Hatton was the same, from beating Thaxton to Tszyu there's only a couple of meaningful fights in there, against Phillips and Tackie.

The problem with a Pavlik fight is that its legitimacy as a test for Bute is based on Pavliks past achievements, at a lower weight, rather than on current form. If Kelly has his head together, is properly prepared and has his 2006-8 game head on then it is a real test for Lucien. If, however, Pavliks many problems outside the ring still impact his performance, Bute could blow him away with a few rounds and it'll be dismissed as another easy fight for Bute. It's one that will really only be known in hindsight, unless Pavlik can prove his current level in a decent performance before going in with Bute.

Put another way, assuming Bute wins and fights the winner of Froch-Ward, the respective paths (Fights over the same period) to that match up would have been...

Ward - Kessler, Bika, Green, Abraham, Froch

Froch - Dirrell, Kessler, Abraham, Johnson, Ward

Bute - Andrade, Miranda, Brinkley, Magee, Mendy, Pavlik

Anyone genuinely think Glen Johnson is an easier assignement than Kelly Pavlik right now?

I would much prefer to see that. Also, as I said above, not only would I like to see Dirrell against Bute, but I would put a fair amount on Andre to prevail in such a fight.

Both better options than Pavlik but as it seems set in stone all we can do is wait for it to be over then hope Bute looks up as opposed to looking below him.

Bute looked decent but no money in fight there for cobra.

The fundamental problem I have with Primetime is the lack of a HD feed. 99% of my TV viewing is on HD channels now. I have an expensive TV and sound system with the full Sky+ HD package in order to enjoy the best quality viewing experience. Having to pay £15 for a grainy (relative to HD) picture and uncertain sound (if the Khan v Judah sound is anything like the Bute fight, I'd choose to watch in silence) simply doesn't float my boat.

Reading the interview in Boxing Monthly, the Prime Time chap states that they operate a business model where the production costs are kept low - this would suggest there is no intention to go down the HD route anytime in the near future. Surely a risky strategy?

There wouldn't be any criticsms simply because Pavlik is now in WBC mandatory position.

And given the run of opponents Froch has had, he'd be due an easy fight. Pavlik is now considered easy compared to the previous fights Carl has had.

Yet this is being considered the first big fight for Bute - so why the double standards I say.

A pish fight for Froch, yet a big american fight for Bute ? nah.
