Holmes and Foreman were ancient. In between Holmes and Tyson there's losses to Riddick Bowe (who ducked Lewis) and Michael Moorer (lol)SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Evander also beat Bowe, a better Tyson, Dokes, Foreman & Holmes. Lennox wasn't dominant enough to avoid Mccall & Rahman. I think they are pretty closely grouped. Evander has the better resume and Lennox beat him head to head and everyone that would fight him. The easily part is what I was laughing at.hhaehre wrote:Lewis was a dominant heavyweight champion, Holyfield wasn't.SaadOffTheDeck wrote: Lewis record easily surpasses Holyfield's?

That ancient Holmes absolutely schooled the same Ray Mercer that gave Lennox hell. They could both still fight better than just about anyone LL ever beat. So was Moorer for that matter.
There is certainly nothing wrong with having Lewis above Evander. Acting like it isn't debatable is embarrassing.

I agree that Holyfield knocks Lewis out if it's a slugfest - Lewis is more powerful but Holyfield's chin is much better. It was just frustrating seeing the bigger, stronger, more powerful man content to out-finesse his smaller, older opponent and seemingly intent to go the distance, even when he had Holyfield hurt in the first fight. In this case I think Lewis was too cautious - he shouldn't have gone in looking for a KO, but he should have made more of the opportunities he had.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Goodnight, Irene wrote:A great, close fight, prime-for-prime --- as I see it. Very close, IMO.
Absolutely, unless Lewis followed the plan of being more aggressive that Jezz alluded to. Evander would kick his ass if he did that. Sticking to his plan and knowing which fighters to attack and which ones to lay off of was perhaps his greatest strength.

I think his best win was against Razor Ruddock. But his most defining win was with the great Mike Tyson

His best win was Ruddock for me.
Nobody expected him to flatten a man who went 19 rounds with Mike Tyson, even though, in hindsight, Tyson of 1991 is overrated & was past his best.
I also think his victory over Gary Mason is very underrated.
In Mason, he beat a very competent fighter who was much more experience than he was & he'd only had 14 fights or so.

Lennox Lewis was a good heavyweight but nothing to be awe about. He did not had a great chin. If he would have fought a prime Evander Holyfield back in the early 90s, he would have get knocked out.
I don't know why Riddick Bowe did not fight him. I think Bowe would have beaten him if they would have fought back in 1993.
Lewis to me is not an all-time top 10 heavyweight. He probably ranks between the 15th to 20th position at best. To me, he is not even in the top 100 greatest fighters pound per pound of all-time

Bowe was terrified of Lennox Lewis; that fear alone would have been enough to ensure that he couldn't have beaten Lewis, even if he did have the actual talent to beat the reckless Lewis of 1993.elmersalsa wrote:Lennox Lewis was a good heavyweight but nothing to be awe about. A better tactic would be to ask him to name them but there are so many lists on the internet.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:As if you even have a list.elmersalsa wrote:To me, he is not even in the top 100 greatest fighters pound per pound of all-time

I have several times, he just ignores it and keeps naming guys that don't make it.

Lennox Lewis doesn't make it in my book. It might make it in your book. Not mines. There are too many extraordinary fighters and legendary champions that I see that deserve to be in the top 100 greats, pound per pound all-time, than Lewis. I think Lewis came at the right time, beating an old Evander Holyfield and a washed up Mike Tyson.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I have several times, he just ignores it and keeps naming guys that don't make it.

I think Lewis is a little bit overrated. He was not even the best hw of the 90s decade.

Nobody cares what you think. You don't even have a top 100. Nothing but hot air.

Re: what do you class as lennox lewis greatest win??
Lewis was a great fighter but just short of the top 10 . . to me he blew his chance at elite-level greatness in his fights with a 37 year old Holyfield. The first fight, a complete stinker, he deserved but it was closer than people remember. Then I had him losing a razor-thin rematch in a fight that he should've stamped his mark in. After that, has lots of Ws over guys who were good (Ruddock, Golota, Mercer, Bruno, Morrison, Tua) but far from great heavyweights, and I thought he lost to Mercer. Then add the two big upset knockout losses. I think a rating of around #15 all-time about fits the bill.
Best W? His best performance was vs Morrison . . a very complete performance vs a guy who had some serious limitations but was still a big dangerman and Lennox creamed him. His most notable victory in terms of strength of opponent was the first Holyfield fight.
