Yet again boxrec posters jump on the very people who bring boxing to our screens. Whilst the emergence of allegedly is good, do people want Sky to pack it in so Frank W arren has the monopoly he had in the past.

King Geedorah wrote:Agree on Froch. He was getting into really talking about what Kenny Anderson had shown in him sparring only for Nelson to interject with some generic comments. Should have left Carl to finish what he had to say as he's sparring the guy, fights in the same division and has walked the same path.

I do like Nelson but there's a touch of the Jamie Redknapp about him these days, seems to be want to assert himself over the new faces.
. I really rate Johnny, I think he's a great summariser offering genuine insight. Also, Terry, he would absolutely SMASH redknapp!

Give Ed a run at commentating. Few bruises along the way, but he listens. Commentators, Dark included, have lost the art of silence. Even Motson shuts up occassionally.

King Geedorah wrote:Aye, Dan, this isn’t a ‘Get rid of the Johnny campaign’ as I do rate him (and am a fierce advocate of safe sex), but he needs to allow other pundits space to work. The Froch one was a case in point as he had insight into Anderson that Nelson lacks.

Granted it could be down to a producer shouting, “Tell Carl to stop wasting time with interesting insights,” in which case you have to ask who is the producer and why is he cutting off decent analysis from the most established (in fighting terms) member of the punditry team? Just seemed a bit daft as Carl’s a legitimate champion, in the same division and has sparred hundreds of rounds with Anderson.

As I say, Redknapp is a good pundit and was the main man but then Sky got in multi-medal winner/former England regular Gary Neville in a senior position and Jamie has struggled to adjust to the fact that Neville’s sustained success at a higher level and ability to convey it verbally marks him out as the new top man. Froch is the most accomplished fighter and pundit so should at least be given the time and space to finish making his points as he’s been there and done it the highest level, not that this automatically makes you a good pundit, mind, but he is awfully lucid and insightful.

Froch & Moore would be a good partnership with Nelson at ringside. I’d actually give Johnny a bash at commentary as he can read a fight.

McGuigan has had some stick but when Audley fought in the US a few years ago Barry did a great job of analysing Audley’s career and did so without the usual rancour and acerbity. Rather than just the usual, ‘Audley is crap’, Barry outlined a lot of the reasons for Big Aud’s failings.

Ian Darke should be lead commentator, Smith is OK but still goes OTT and there’s the general problem of the lack of silences during exchanges or one of the guys making a long winded point about the fight to the point where they miss what is going on in the ring. Fight can be very exciting but the person commentating on them shouldn’t get too caught up in the drama to the extent that they sound like they’re completely lost in the action. Rawling even made this error, babbling, before a fight recently, chatting non-stop during Manny’s ring walk, repeatedly telling us that the crowd were creating a great atmosphere when he should have kept schtum and allowed us to soak it up.

This said, it is a tough job, one that everyone thinks they can do but that few could manager, as shown by various people over the years.
I agree with what you say mate - Froch is very good. I think Johnny's excitement at just how well Kell boxed probably got the better of him. I can just see how much of a buzz he is getting from seeing Kell and Dominic succeed.

COMPLETELY DISAGREE - thought the general production values and aesthetic of allegedly were very amateur and just underlined to me how exceptionally proficient and professional the Sky production is. (I'm sure this will improve, to a degree, over time but unless they really invest and match Sky for budget it will always look cheap).

I think Sky Sports boxing is absolutely outstanding, i have to say. The production has always been there and this season we're getting some cracking fights too. I genuinely think it's good value for money and it sticks in the craw to say it as i am the son of a journo who went on strike to stop Murdoch and still can't bring himself to mention the Aussie tw@t's name!

Agree with all of the above. There's also seems to be more emphasis on selling the fight to the viewer as a good fight than analysing the action.

At some point you just have to serve up the product and it is what it is.

If you ordered a meal in the restaurant and while you were eating it the waiter was in your ear the whole time with "Mmmmm yum, yum, yum, yum, yum that really is a cracking bit of brisket wouldn't you say Glenn?" I reckon it would detract from the enjoyment of the meal.

Presume you haven't looked at their schedule then? Seems like they are missing out on Cotto-Margarito and Pacquiao-Marquez, to add to Floyd-Ortiz, Khan fights and most of Warrens.

I come to boxrec now only when I have something big in mind that I want to see what other fans think, happens once every couple weeks. Today I have been fuming with the stoppage and that Sky backed it.

But this thread is bang on, I do not care less whether Adam Smith is now the big cheese at Sky, he is a nice chap clearly but a rubbish commentator, his tone is annoying and he is an excitable child who does not talk about much relevance in the fight, just babbles on with rubbish

Nelson I can tolerate but my all time worse is McGuigain, I would like to smash that little paddy right in the mouth to be honest. He tries to act like he is super intelligent with the longest words ever, he sounds like he has swallowed a thesaurus and makes him sound a twat. I also hear that he knows little and is prodded with the facts to keep on track
You'd like to smash McGuigan in the mouth would you? What a hard man. Chances are that unless you were a professional fighter yourself you'd end up eating those words in a bad way if you ever attempted such a thing in the real world. It's not difficult to be a keyboard warrior.

Ha yes, very true :TU: Especially if the waiter had a voice like Adam Smith.

And don't tell me Johnny Nelson just acts as a shill when it's a Sheffield fighter - if it's a Sky fighter, he's like that everytime, 100%

But if they have to keep him, put him in as a ringside commentator, just don't keep him on the panel. Froch, Moore, Macklin - just miles better.

I take the point made but for me, Nelson is always far too obvious in praise for his mates. I certainly don't dislike Johnny, on the contrary I have a lot of respect for his achievements. However, I remember when complete underdog Sean Hughes had the night of his life beating Esham Pickering but rather than give him due credit for a great win over the then champ, Nelson just spoke about how unlucky Esham was, and how hard he works, and how he must be tired. Hughes had started work in the factory at 5am that morning, but Nelson didn't bother to look past his friend for the sake of fair analysis. It must be difficult to detach yourself, but you have to, it's the job.

With regard to the post which said he takes the sky party line rather than specifically for his gym, I would disagree. Nelson and Jamie Moore were bang on during the recent Cox fight.

Could not agree more. While the production is still suspect at times and needs imrpoving, the commentary and punditry on allegedly made me take note of how poor some of the guys at sky are! the other weekend, Enzo Macc actually did what a commentator is supposed to do....commentate on the action! Not sit there banging on about a fighter's star power and how he is this and that. Please Adam, let us fans be the judge of that and do you f-ing job and commentate!!

Its not quite as cringeworthy as i had thought. Nelson is just behaving like an over excited kid and Froch, although interupted, is not offended IMO, he's actually in a round-about sort of way agreeing with Nelson's drivel.

No offence to Kell, he's a good talent and comes across well, but he's clearly a victim of hype and not as good as he's being made out to be. Listening to Nelson you'd think Ortiz is next and that Brook will breeze past him. Thats nonsense, if that fight was next Ortiz would be a clear favourite with the bookies and would make easy work of Brook. Ok, so they need flagship fighters to sell to the public, but no need to go so overboard. We'll all need sick bags soon if they keep up this standard.

Froch clearly needs to be a part of the broadcast team, he's cool, calm, collected and responds to questions with valuable insigt and intelligence.

The bit at 4mins 30secs is very funny, Nelson touches Frochs knee and Carl reacts by wiping it as though it's dirty.

That sums it up perfectly.

I also agree Ed Robinson has really hit his stride he is dead relaxed asking questions on ringside and his commentary has been excellent. He knows when to just let the action speak for itself althogh he hasn't had many good fights to show his stuff yet.

If you were so "hurt" by the comment why has it taken you nearly 4 months to realise ?
