Bad stoppage or not maybe it was a blessing as it was always pretty clear that McCloskey wasn't at world level and had he won tonight we heard that they were thinking of sticking him in against JMM...

I think gorgeous Eddie needs to match him carefully from now on and forget about aiming too high with him.

IJL had a very tough call to make there, and in retrospect he probably feels it was a little too soon.

looks like im pretty much on my own on this one but i thought the stoppage was brilliant, he was gone and a sitting duck,2 more seconds and he was getting put to sleep and maybe hurt bad, great stoppage imo

Prescott was cheated against McKloskey.

The doctor cheated him against Khan. He might have been 6 rounds down, but he had 6 more rounds to turn the fight around and he wasn't given that chance because the fight was stopped too early.

Prescott vs McCloskey was a close fight and could have gone either way.

Yeah I have to agree, one more shot and could have been seriously hurt. Was trying to get it together but I think IJL had little option. As it was, all three judges had McCloskey ahead at that stage

I don't think he would have been stopped at all, let alone after another 2 seconds.

I agree; Corley was the sharper and quicker hitter through the bout. The nose looked to be broken and Chop Chop had not even started to breath hard. McCloskey was very brave, he was injured and hampered with his nose for most of the bout and can regroup and box again at a good level. Corley was a league above and it was a good stoppage by the ref who's in there to keep the boxers safe. It doesn't take a massive hitter to do lasting damage. Ian John Lewis did McCloskey a favour there.

It looked a bad stoppage on tele at the time but IJL was looking into eyes and even Hearn said afterwards he didnt have problem with the stoppage.

im with curtis on this one, one more big hook and duddy would have been in big big trouble, we could argue the stoppage was slightly premature, but shit, the crolla stoppage was far far far worse.

duddy is decent domestic class, he overachieved winning the euro title, has earnt more money than his talent deserved, harsh but true, ive nothing against ccloskey but ive never rated him.

I agree with woody and mcguigan (spelling?) on this one. The ref's first job is to make the fight as safe as possible, remember this the sport of boxing, not fighting. Who knows, maybe the ref just prolonged a career instead of it finishing early. Someone said earlier that careers are at stake. Well they're quickly shortened by ref's letting peoples pride take over.

IJL has been responsible for some ridiculous decisions (letting the Briggs-Klitschko fight go past 9 was the worst for me, along with scoring Lynes-Purdy a draw) but I actually thought he got this right. McCloskey looked f**ked for me.

As for the Crolla stoppage been far worse Rhino that's bullshit imo, they were both safety first stoppages after both were had come worse off and were taking punishment.

When McCloskey said afterwards that he didn't know what went wrong I felt like shouting at the TV, "You boxed with your hands by your waist and your chin in the air offering Corley free shots all night long!"

What went wrong? Nothing. People thought you were better than you actually are.

Robbed against Khan is laughable. Khan is two levels above him. Corley is done yet gave him all he could handle. Poor stoppage arguably but McClosky is way off the elite.

you are having a giraffe, crolla was in much better nick than mcclosky was in, crolla had been bossing aspects of the fight and could possibly have won by stoppage himself, mcclosky was not even at the races, it was a shite performance in front of nearly 5k of his own supporters, hats off to chop chop, nice to see an over the hill foreign import actually come to win!

I can't disagree regarding McCloskey's performance but neither stoppage was a complete travesty in my book .

Good stoppage IMO if Corley had followed up Paul Mc would have ended up on a stretcher.IJL did him a favour letting him finish on his feet.In the position both fighters are at ,in their respective careers the situation should have never occurred. Corley is well past his best and IJL new Paul Mc shouldn't have been in the position of getting hurt.

He's punched above his weight as he is fairly dull to watch and didn't have selling point prior to the Khan fight.

What I thought happened last night was IJL got in between fighters to warn a fighter (I think it was Corley for a boderline low blow) - although as he was doing this, Corley caught Paul and staggered him. This left IJL in a bit of an awkward position, between both fighters when Paul was doing a funny dance..... does he move to the side to allow Corley to attack (which would have been left with criticisms), or does he stop the fight.

I personally think that had he not decided to get between them to give them a talking too, then the fight wouldn't have been stopped. I think IJL hesitancy in stopping the fight made it look like he had no choice (cause of his positioning at the time) but to stop it.

Whether you like the stoppage or not, what I don't like is the lack of consistency from IJL. John Keane, always stops fights early.... IJL allowed Shannon Briggs take a sustained beating vs Vitali..... Briggs was in a worst state in some of those rounds than McCloskey was.... and he was a mile down on points and a right mess.

Personally, I think both the Crolla and McCLoskey fights were early stopped.

Edit - on review, sorry I got it wrong.... it was previously in the round where McCloskey was a little wobbled that IJL didn't look at Paul but focused on warning Corley. I really don't know what he is doing in the stoppage. He gets between them, without stopping it. Why doesn't he immediately stop the fight...... was he waiting to see if Paul could return.

Whether you agree with the stoppage or not, the hesistancy is just not acceptable. What would have happened had Paul recovered. It seems like he gives Paul a chance to get his legs back before stopping it.

Not very often. Because referees tend to stop them at the right time.
