Nobody ever said Chavez did anything wrong, you went off on that tangent on your own.

Re: Some Thoughts On Chavez v Taylor I
The first time I watched this fight I was going along with the commentators, every time since then, I see a very different fight. . Taylor lands more punches and looks on top, but Chavez builds and builds on the more effective punching and breaks down Taylor.
The 2 second stoppage does come across as heartbreaking and the ref could've gone either way IMO. Only 2 seconds left but Steele knew Chavez had his man and just 1 or 2 more punches could have stayed with Richard Steele forever. My guess, on different days, the same refs would make different decisions. Tough call and either way, many will be upset. Every once in a while rounds are timed too long or short, ref needs to look out for the fighters first and he had Meldrick Taylor in front of him so he had a better look than any of us.
Great talking point though! We're getting years out of this one!

I think the clock absolutely plays a part in a referees mind.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Im saying if you would stop a fight in the middle of round six based on how bad a condition you think a man is, but would let it go on if there were, say, ten seconds left in round twelve, then you have cheated the attacking fighter out of a TKO he has fairly earned.
The clock has no part in a fair referees mind, IMO. None.
Let's step back from this fight and say...
Fighter A drops Fighter B hard in the 6th round of an even fight with 2:40 on the clock. As opposed to Fighter A dropping Fighter B with 15 seconds on the clock. There's no way to prove it, but wouldn't you think the referee would stop the fight in the first instance and let it play on in the second instance?

Most probably would...and theyd be wrong to.
Re: Some Thoughts On Chavez v Taylor I
Once again, of course Steele made the right call. He saw Taylor take a long, horrible and sustained beating that left him hospitalized and brutally affected for the rest of his life. Taylor displayed all the signs of a fighter that was knocked out on his feet within the scheduled rounds and left tragically damaged. It happens. Chavez proved to be the greater fighter.

At least not through 11 and a half rounds.

Too bad this was one of those unusual fights not scheduled for eleven and a half rounds.

It wasn't. Funny how some people take the result a referee/judge gives as some sort of letter of the law and final ruling.
I guess Ramirez beat Whitaker, because ya know, the judges said so.

Also to expand on that final Hail Mary comparison that keeps getting brought up, if you're down that much in a football game you can convert the Hail Mary and still lose, football isn't a game where the final result can be changed on the final play if you trail by enough.

So if youre behind a certain amount of points, you shouldnt be allowed to score a TKO?
I am not saying Steele was 100% right or wrong to stop it, but this idea he has NO RIGHT to stop it within the scheduled distance (which is what he did) is purely emotional hyperbole with no logical (or fair) basis at all.
If you would stop it in the middle of round six, you should be stopping it at ANY TIME. THATS unbiased officiating.

You certainly should be able to score a TKO at any time. Flush shot and opponent is convulsing on the ground. Don't bother a count.Goodnight, Irene wrote:So if youre behind a certain amount of points, you shouldnt be allowed to score a TKO?

Standing up and willing to fight, well that's another story.

He couldnt even answer Steele.
Honest question, non-rhetorical --- how many bouts can you name where a boxer continued after failing to answer a ref!?

Irene's analogies on this topic get more horrid every time he repeats them. Even when I explained to him that Football games are never stopped, he still keeps coming with it. Far below his intellect and posting abilities.

Many, sadly it's as sore of a topic with me as it is with you. Honestly, I'll never get over it.Goodnight, Irene wrote:How many times have you washed your hands of this topic, Saad?

Re: Some Thoughts On Chavez v Taylor I
Honestly, I can't recall an example. It's also akin to the people that asked when a judge scored a round with three knockdowns 10-7, it never turns into an issue until something big like this goes on. I will say that a referee will usually grab the fighters gloves and repeat the question instead of just waving it off. None of that matters to me, he got up and he won.Goodnight, Irene wrote:He couldnt even answer Steele.

Steele did repeat the question.
He may've also grabbed the gloves. Id have to check, but I think he did.

He didn't, he got up tight and got taylor's attention and then immediately stopped it.

I thought the rematch was stopped prematurely, if that makes you feel any better.

That fight was meaningless, Taylor will always have his win here.

This one was great, a fighter getting robbed doesn't take away from the quality of the bout. Same thing happened in Castillo/Corrales 1. Chavez performed admirably in defeat, that was an amazing rally that just fell short.
The only reason they had the rematch and the third Randall fight is because Chavez knew he was the benefactor of shady shit against both of them and wanted revenge on his record.
