Thanks for the answer Darcy; I know it were on a lower level but was Shaun Gray the same; ie naturally heavy handed or was it a technique that was learnt in the gym?

palooka i am mostly a subscriber to the view that punchers are born not made. other than the odd example like say Hearns becoming a power-puncher by changing his technique and sitting down on his punches more as a pro, you don't see too many fighters who noticeably 'become' punchers, as it were. my guess is (and i'd lov to see if anyone could confirm this) Evatt's natural power would have been evident if not from the moment he stepped in the gym then very shortly after

Sounds like his life went terribly downhill. Remember watching him give Junior Jones a very hard night's work on a Naseem undercard. Good tough 90s fighter. Love the thought of a 9 stone guy putting bouncers to sleep, most doormen seem to be sick, evil bully boys who like throwing their weight around. This Evatt must have been quite a character. RIP.

he was a funny man and some of the stories of the things that he got up to would make you laugh out loud, also i first met him at the matchroom gym and from the start he could wack mate just ask his old sparring partners

I went to Richards funeral yesterday and he had a blinding turn out of friends and family, there were some old faces from the boxing world, the service was very good with standing room only David Kehoe, Paul Silky Jones, Marc Callaghan, Georgie Smith were pall-bearer's and Dean Pithie carried Richards IBO Belt into the service, it was lovely how in such a shot life Richard had affected so many people (in a good way) everyone i spoke to had a funny story on him,
Marc Callaghan spoke about when he first joined the matchroom and on his first sparring session he had to sparr the tiger he thanked him for the introduction to professional boxing then David Kehoe spoke about the two fights they had in the Am's and how they had became friends from then on and it was only down to Richard that the matchroom signed him up,Dean Powell was there and spoke of when he was asked to help in getting Richard ready for the jones fight and even though he was a handfull (Dean turned the job down first of all) Evatt done everything that was asked of him and when you think about it Richard didn't do to bad on 3 weeks training
afther the service everyone went to a local social club for a few drinks where they had all Richards news cuttings,photo's, shorts and gloves on show which was nice to remember all the good times
all in all it was a good day a good turnout and a good send of for the man that was known as the TIGER

The Tiger was taken too young, as a fan it's easy to forget that the boxers on TV are real life people with lives, problems, friends and family. I'm pleased so many turned ou for him and you've described it well Darcy, respect
