The ref was actually in the act of raising his hands to stop the fight when the fight turning/winning punch was landed.

That was brutal i remember Hamed refused to knock him out because Brendan Ingle told him to finish the fight

Credit where credit's due, that was Glyn Leach (the editor of Boxing Monthly) who used the phrase in his fight report. But it's stayed with me, vividly so, down the years.

Great writing can do that. I can still quote the opening three or four lines of Lolita, off the top of my head, though I haven't read the book in years. Sound & The Fury, Slaughterhouse Five, too.

Oh, & Neuromancer, by William Gibson, too. But I shouldn't say that one out loud. If you love writing & love boxing, then the memorable ones stay with you forever.

Pryor-Arguello and Chavez-Taylor have been mentioned, and those fights weren't one-sided.

Chiquita-Sorjaturong. Both of them looked like they'd lost a fight with a machine (Chiquita's cuts and Saman's swelling). Another classic put on by the little giants. Saman took a vicious beating, especially to the body, before coming back.

Indeed there may be examples of two sided terrible beatings. I've oftend pondered a hypothetical fight between Holyfield and Frazier where neither comes out a winner even if someones hand was raised.

I'm sure there must be examples in boxing where you just wouldn't want to be either man at the final bell.

vitali vs shannon briggs - appalling on every level..this shit should have been stopped by 10..i was horrified watching this..no gave a fornicate about shannon that night..refs, doctors, briggs corner, and esp vitali

pac vs margarito - came a month after the above fight...i thought pac would win by decision like he did against clottey..didn't expect him to beat margarito half blind and nearly to death

salido-lopez 2 - they both beat the crap out of each other..i honestly think lopez might be ruined but we'll see once he gets off suspension

vic darchinyan-rodrigo guerrero - thank god rodrigo has a chin because he took some serious punishment against vic and kept coming..i mean vic teed off him and landing flush i was having flashbacks of his fight with burgos watching it...thank good guerrero left in one piece

Are you saying Vitali should've cared about Briggs? I understand the ref, the doctor, and Briggs's corner.
If that's not your argument, let me know.
I do not want compassionate fighters in the ring.
I want ruthless killers who will inflict as much damage as they can (within the rules of the sport; I'm opposed to rabbit punches, intentional butting, etc.).
I do not want fighters to show kindness to their opponents. The opponent is there to be destroyed within the rules of the sport.
Again, if this wasn't your argument (that Vitali should've eased up on Briggs), let me know; I don't want to refute an argument that wasn't made.

i thought vitali should have eased up on briggs like how pac did with margarito if the fight is no longer competitive..i like brutal fights not brutal and severe one sided beatdowns..my opinion though

I thought that what Pac did v. Margachito and DLH was pathetic. It isn't a fighter's job to be nice to the opponent. It's the ref's job, the corner's, the doctor's, the commission's job to be worried about the opponent, not a fighter's. If the ref, the doctor, the commission, etc. hasn't stopped the fight, pound away, I say.

there was nothing wrong about the dlh stoppage..oscar got his ass whooped and his corner stopped it while dlh was sitting on the stool deflated and badly beaten not saying a word..now if they didnt stop it pacquaio would have prolly ended it in the next 2 rounds

No, I'm saying it was pathetic that Pac eased up on Oscar in the last round. He was quoted as saying he felt pity for Oscar.
