My thoughts exactly.

And at least there'll be a bit of thought given to who he actually fights.

These Latvians were cannon fodder for David Price.... one of them could have been seriously hurt.

Kinda ironic that Maloney is calling for the sacking of a Board member, when most of the gross mismatches that were on Sky in recent times featured his prospects putting poor blokes to the sword.

I've never boxed in my life, but I'm pretty confident that I could have held my own with some of those turds.

I would have thought Freddie would have completed a very strict trial bout (in front of the central area council if that's where he resides) against a decent heavy. I also think the Board would have been mindful that FF is a high profile figure attracting much attention so they would have been very critical and thorough in their assessment.

That or a nice envelope stuffed with used 20's changed hands ;)

It is farcical. All this does is perpetuate the myth amongst some people that if you think you are a bit handy you should have a go at pro boxing because all it takes is throwing punches.

Its not the case and the casual fan also sees that Freddie FLintoff tried his hand so it cant be that hard or skilled its just if you are prepared to throw and take a punch which is not the reality of professional boxing. Many "top" unlicensed boxers have had a go in the pro game and found themselves wanting by journeymen on their debut.

It devalues the achievements of genuine boxers and the skill and commitment it really takes to get into the ring and hold your own. Would they do the same programme for cricket? "Ricky Hatton trains as a fast bowler and batsmen for 10 weeks having previously no experience. Watch him make his Lancashire debut this weekend" It just wouldnt happen it would be farcical.

I'm with Mr Dooley on this one.

It always astounds me when this forum becomes a hive of morality and 'doing the right thing'. On the one hand (and I think its very sad) you have a man being defended for allegedly being involved in drug dealing but its ok cos he's 'one of us' you know that select group of boxers, fans etc who are in the gang yet on the other had a man who has undertaken to train himself, discipline himself and fulfill all the requirements he needs to be granted a license gets a royal slagging off!!!

I think some poeples views on right and wrong are slightly skewedm

Listen, this is a murky, shitty. Immoral, seedy Sport at times. Stop painting it as a paragon of virtue. And just enjoy the fight (or not) when it happens. If you don't like it watch whatever wank is on BBC on a Friday night these days

This is a sport which in "the good old days" was ran by the Mafia, it's always been seedy and full of dishonorable characters and thugs.

If a prospective pro has no amateur experience (and sometimes even if he does, depending on its extent) the applicant will have a trial bout in a gym to assess his competence.

Curtis did this, I believe. He probably got into a tear up ;-)

No idea if Big Freddie has.

 yeah I bet he did. It would be interesting to know if Flintoff did.

Robert Smith should be sacked for bringing boxing into disrepute. If this circus act is going to proceed I only hope that Flintoff is knocked out quickly. He appears even more stupid than I thought he was and he could end up being seriously hurt.

Maloney is spot on.

Yea I had a trial bout down in london against some big lump! I did 4x2 minute rounds, I was well out of my depth but showed I was willing, I then had a interview where I was asked some questions about my motives to become a pro, the week later I was granted a license, I've not seen anything of freddie and have no idea if he's any goog but if he's fit and willing why shouldn't he be given a chance? And frank saying he has no chance of winning a title doesn't wash with me, there's loads of pros up and down the country that will never win any titles but so what, its not all about the glory sometimes a mans got to do what a mans got to do and if he wants to do it I say good luck to him, hands up chin down bombs away!!

<tongue firmly in cheek>

I have 100% faith in the school teacher, traffic warden and hairdresser who performed Freddies trial bout.

Why is it any different than Maloney putting bums (probably worse than Freddie) in with Price to get their face torn off? So hypocritical. And thanks Curtis. No actual boxing experience and went on to a 10-0 run and eventually become British champion :bag: :bag: :bag:

People getting a pro license without any amaterur experince probably happens more than we know. Rememebr a local lad being in the paper - Michael Matthewsian who walked into Jack Bishops gym and wanted to be a boxer, he started training, sparred a few rounds against Roman Greenberg in front of the BBBoC and got his license.

Think he drew and lost his two fights and went off to be an amateur.

Well that can't have happened... as you can't be a pro then become an amatuer

If Flintoff turns pro and wins a British or World title in a year (not gonna happen) then it may show the sport in a bad light. If Freddie turns pro and has some close fights with journeymen or gets beat by them then it further proves what a tough sport boxing is

It's all about freedom of choice, if Freddie wants to try and be a pro HW who are you ar anyone else (other than the BBBC) to say he can't have a go at it?? Matt Skelton turned pro later than Freddie has and look how well he done, were you giving him the same criticsm
