Burns is not a credit to boxing if he refuses this fight. After an 8 week training camp he'll be in fighting shape. 8 weeks is surely plenty of time to get attuned to a big fight. If its not maybe he's not cut out for the top level.

Broner flatly does not need Burns and frankly Burns should be very grateful for a second opportunity for a career high payday. Broner can fight anyone he wants, Burns can't and many stay at home British alphabet champions have struggled for such an opportunity. The assumption Broner will still be there in April is a dangerous one. Ricky and his team have talked a good game and its now time to step up to the plate. Burns is a key meal ticket for Morrisson, allegedly et al but he needs to assert hinself and make clear they work for him, not the other way around.

Moreover, I've paid alot of money to attend Burns fights and as a fan this is a real let down. I wont be spending any more cash to watch joke fights like Joseph Laryea if I know for a fact he wets his pants every a big fight comes up. The lovely humble boy schtick is wearing thin and he's developing a not unjustified reputation as a ducker.

All this talk about holding out for a better deal or fighting when the time is right is absolute bollocks.

It may be prevalent in this beautiful sport but it doesn't mean it's acceptable.

A fighter will carve a better reputation for themselves amongst the boxing fraternity if they take the big fights when the opportunities arrive, fighting the best out there, regardless of whether they lose or not.

Frochy will go down a legend. No one's arsed that he's been beaten, or that Calzaghe would probably have beaten him - he's the man who's fought the best and optimises how boxer's should conduct themselves. Proper throwback.

I'd look more favourable on Burns if he fought Broner and got beat rather than winning against the likes of Walsh or Rees.

This is a massive fight against a HUGE prospect. fornicate trying to dictate terms, be appreciative of the position you're in and take this amazing chance while you can!

Then Walsh and Layrea appear instead...are those two really 'unification' material...please...

Boxers and their teams are entitled to make money from their champions but please be honest and admit that, instead of trying to insult the boxing fraternity's intelligence by talking about 'unification' when in reality you constantly dodge anybody who seems to have a genuine pulse.

The real 'greats' like Lewis,Tyson, Hagler, Leonard, Duran and Hearns used to fight anyone and everybody who claimed they had a right to title recognition. These days there is too much manouvering and manipulation of people making money out of 'papers champions' who are hell bent on denying the public out of seeing genuine contenders contesting titles in order to maintain their little nest eggs in the bank.
Tyson didn't fight everyone who was available. Other than that I take your point.

Clinton refused because he had "loads" of other options, that payday floated down the river and he didn’t get anything close again. If Broner doesnt fight Burns he continues to headline HBO in America and build his name. A damend sight more americans have heard of Broner than Burns, who on the googlebox there is already having his career to date drawing comparisons with ODH and Mayweather. Beating Broner elevates Burns to potential million dollar fights and makes him a name over the pond. Losing to Broner pretty much leaves him where he is. Im sure fights with Walsh and that phillipino can be made again to manoeuvre back into mandatory by which time Broner will be long gone.
Didn't Clinton once sign for the fight and Joe declined?

I'm sure the WBO wouldn't be too tough in enforcing the mandatory if they were asked nicely enough

Burns needs a big fight. But he doesn't need to be paid like a flunky.

$400k is good money compared to what the £100k-£150 he's been getting.

But that isn't the relevant point. What is the going rate for a unification fight, I'm not sure $400k is quite there do you? Particularly, when he's travelling to the others back yard.

Which bit is wrong Billy?
1. Had he not side stepped broner twice?
2. Is he not turning down broner to fight a lesser opponent in jan?
3. Has he not had more fights than broner?
4. more championship fights than Broner?
5. would this be a career high pay pay?
6. Would he not be getting at least 1/3 less in this "defence" in scotland

Do you really think it's a good idea to go into this fight with a short training camp?

Also, is Broner a prospect? The lads already a two weight world champion.
I mean't he's a prospect in terms of what it looks like he's going to achieve. He's still short into a career with a lot of potential at the top.

Is it a short training camp? 9 weeks weren't it?

WBO Mandatory will likely be the Hungarian Lionel Blair.

But I'm being facetious

Burns is a very good belt holder, not seen enough of Broner to judge, but I suspect there is another version of Jeff Lacy going on here.

"He's black, he's American, he looks bigger than Ricky, ergo, he must be brilliant."

Burns is a very competent guy.

I think 2013 will be very interesting for him.

Interesting that Shaeffer should make this offer so publicly the same week he's trying to recruit British fighters, if media reports are accurate.

What do you mean 9 weeks weren't it?

He's just come out of a camp that ended with no fight, it's likely he'll want a couple of weeks off over christmas and new year, that'll leave a short training camp. Why sign to fight Broner unless it's under perfect terms for you? Burns isn't some challenger for his belt, he's a legit wc that's looking at a unification.

I'd want him to sign to fight because I want to see the best scraps happen. In a perfect world they would, but in reality fighters squabble over little details, negotiations don't amount to anything and then something will kill the fight off. Pacman/Mayweather for example.

Boxers should grasp their opportunities. They're fighters at the end of the day.

there was a time a few years ago when miguel cotto was a work in progress (didnt hold a title) but was a legitimate opponent for ricky hatton at the time (i think hatton was newly world champ) - my opinion was that team hatton should have sought to get cotto in the ring before he fulfilled his potential and became a more dangerous opponent. i was wrong.
hatton might have beaten cotto at 140lbs at that time but it was wiser to leave him alone and build the career in another way. burns and his camp are not daft - the boy will make more dough by taking a wise route through this tough sport.

Big fuckoff difference is their respective fanbases. Hatton couldn't build up his name any more than it already was with a fight against Cotto whereas Burns would find himself in a much stronger position, especially stateside should he beat Broner.

Of course it's a gamble but where are Burns' other big options? He is hardly building himself towards a Mayweather style megafight like Hatton was. The best he can probably hope for is a move up and a Khan fight and I can't see that happening

Some people really are stupid... When a fighter trains hard for a fight then there is no fight they are very disappointed. It's not great psychologically now for Ricky to jump straight in against Broner would be crazy... He needs to get the last non fight out his system then fight after that... It's easy for everyone to say on here but I would rather see the fight with both fighters being able to prepare properly.. So many negative Brits... Try getting behind our World Champions rather than putting them down.. You won't see many Americans giving Broner this kind of abuse.. Is it because Burns is not English?? If he was he would be the saviour... Ricky should fight Broner in May if they both get past there mandatory fights

It's not like it would be the end of the world if Burns lost. As well as the big payday he could come back and win another version of the title.

I'm sorry but there's some absolute utter bollocks spoken on here.

Burns a 'bottler'? - do me a twatting favour.

He fought Martinez, Katsidis when everyone on here said he would get twatted.

He's fought Mitchell who is a good opponent.

Why should he take Broner on if he feels he can have the fight at a later date when all the terms will be favourable.

If he takes this offer, he's fighting Broner on a GBP card, in a location which will suit Broner, a ref and judges selected by GBP and basically he'll get buttfucked.

Some people on here talk crap - if he takes the fight all the best to him, if not its bordering on outrageous to call him a 'bottler'

Absolutely right,

8 week training camp for the fight to breakdown...thats 8 weeks of blood sweat and tears for nothing! Now i'm sure all you haters have been there before so you all know what thats like yeh????....yeh??? course you do.....idiots.

Let him have a couple of weeks for Christmas and then arrange the fight for later on when both are ready and in the right frame of mind.

100% Burns v 100% Broner is a fight i'd love to see for sure but i absolutely cannot understand some peoples view on this......

It is up to him to take the fight of course, as a 'world' 'champion' he could take the
fight and see it as a big opportunity to break the states and get more fights depending
if he wins or loses - if he loses badly - what does he go back to? A EBU title maybe where
the competition is far tougher than the WBO title he holds now? A British or Commonwealth
title?

If he takes the fight and gets a shellacking then those biggish paydays are gone for good.
However - if can get a 100000 grand for defending against one of the Walsh boys then he
has made the money from getting beaten off Broner (yup, that is what will happen) if he
defends his title off three more of that type of opponent. I don't blame him to be honest
but it isn't an attitude that a potential all time great would indulge in. But do any of you
think of Burns as a legitimate world champion because I don't! Thus, he can do what he
likes - he isn't a bottler as far as I am concerned. Let him make his money and get out.

Too much over-analysis of what is a very straight forward situation. The fight has been offered to Burns on a plate and he is turning it down. Whether boxing fans want to call it a "bottle job" or regard it as strategic planning, the bottom line is that there is a date, venue, purse and tv coverage all in place, and Burns is not accepting the offer. It is what it is.

I've nothing but respect for his trainer's loyalty and passion, he is hardly going to come out and say "my fighter has bottled it".

I imagine the way its happened is that Team Burns have collectively whistled past the graveyard on this one, and convinced themselves that they're not really running away from Broner. The manager has been the manager of a world champ for a long time now, ditto for the trainer, and with any luck the gravy train still has a few stops before the end of the line.

I'm a big fan of Ricky's and love what he has achieved but this is embarrassing.

I agree, I don't think he is scared of Broner but he is on a bloody good thing at the moment
and why end that if he doesn't have to - it is not like in the good old days where it was
one title and he would have had to defend in the states or fight in front of his home crowd
at 2am. He has it pretty easy but then he hold's one quarter of the 'world title' so who cares
right? I would be really surprised if anyone here sees him in the same light as Alexis Arguello
or Beau Jack.

I am quite aware of that, thank you. As the question asked pertained to a matchmaking issue, I assumed that you'd stick your oar in to shout him down with some bullshit & challenge his credentials to "take care of" a fighter's interests & matchmaking, as you have done to me in the past, despite the fact that you don't manage him either. I can provide a link to where you said exactly this to me if you wish.

If you read my post here carefully, at no point did I imply that you manage Ricky. I was pretending to be you doing your normal hair-trigger one-note shouty toe-the-party-line bollocks, & I assumed that you would use exactly the same tactic you used on me when I asked a similar reasonable question in another thread.

But thank you so much once again for your time.
