Frank Maloney

I genuinely never understood why Henry Cooper was knighted. With respect, he was a decent but not genuinely world class fighter and he never held a world title. Yes, he knocked down Ali but surely for a knighthood which is the ultimate accolade you have to do something pretty extraordinary.
Lennox Lewis should definitely have received one given he unified the division and was widely recognised as the best heavyweight in the world for about 4 or 5 years at a time when the division was still decent.

Cant we campaign to get Kevin "The Look" Lueshing knighted for flooring a peak Felix Trinidad? And he worked tirelessly for the NSPCC. Never made a shit/good aftershave advert, though.

Because it's the biggest load of nonsense ever that means nothing in the real world, just some wee fantasy land of lord's and lady's. It's the 21st century ffs, a person isn't defined by some moronic 'title', crowns and all that rubbish. Talk about living in the dark ages

The other factor is that awards like knighthoods are given to people whose faces better fit within "the establishment".
By this, I don't mean given just to white upper middle class sportsmen and women but rather to those who are a lot more boring and straightlaced despite the fact that often the contempories of the people to obtain such awards may have achieved as least as much.
Just a few examples of people who have not been given the awards they deserve but who clearly should have been based on sporting achievement and prowess are:
Daley Thompson (2 time Olympic champion at the hardest event and not knighted when Kelly Holmes was damed for winning 2 races in the same Olympics)
George Best (remarkably never even given an MBE. I appreciate his off field activities were not ideal but he was the best footballer Britain ever produced)
Ronnie O'Sullivan (again never been given an MBE. Off table antics not ideal but the guy is a 4 time world champion. Jimmy White and John Parrott were each given an MBE and only have 1 world title between them)
Henry Cooper/Lennox Lewis is covered above

George Best admitted that he beat his wife up on numerous occasions.
Quite rightly he never got an honour.

I'm not condoning his behaviour for one second but that came much later in his life. Why wasn't he given an award when he was still playing after all he achieved. Also Geoff Boycott beat his wife up but was his award withdrawn?

The Boycott conviction was a joke, it is quite unbelievable that he was found guilty. I do take your point however.
Best wasted his talent and was a washed up drunk at 27. I think he is the last person in sport that should be honoured. Im a United fan, but i cannot stand this Best worship.

Oh and Sir Henry Cooper?
What a joke that is.
Tommy Cooper was more deserving.

But it then comes back to a debate about what the honours are given for. If they are given for achievement and ability in the persons chosen sport then it is a joke to suggest that someone like Best should not have been honoured. I believe they should be given for achievement and ability but all to often they are given because somebody is an all round good egg whose face fits within certain circles.

It is an interesting debate, however I think there is a difference between being a "good egg" and punching your wife in the face. There was a very dark side to George Best that is hard to ignore.
Like everything in life, you have to look at the whole picture.
Anyway, the honours system is a total joke. Its like arguing about the best way to wipe your arse*
*Maybe not, actually.

Again - Lennox Lewis will never be knighted as long as he holds Canadian citizenship. Lennox Lewis and his knighthood is one big non-starter.

A knighthood means extra earning power.

It's more to do with royal bumlicking to be knighted, Mick Jagger received a knighthood and he lived a life of debauchery but he knew a lot of the royals on a "friendly" basis and i think he shagged the queens sister.

They never bow down to no bitches or assholes. Plus rumour has it, every so called king has an ancestor they exiled who knocked their asses to sweet dreams.

Those people (the Windsors) wouldn't even piss on us common people. And for good measure we part finance their privileged lifestyles.

Could be worse, the Lou Marsh award - named after a boxing referee and judge and the top
sports award in Canada, has never been won by a boxer! Can you imagine a 'Sir Henry Cooper
sports award' and a boxer never ever wins it?

And do you really believe a "serving" Royal would have the same risk placed upon them as the everyman? somehow, i think not.
