we can't include Mr Lewis?
22-0 when he fought Tucker

but I sort of get your point
I have asked about Deontay Wilder at 20+ and 0. If he were British, I am sure the drums would be beating. Stateside cousins are more realistic though and know he has lots to prove.
In the pecking order though is Fury (who has a superior record to the likes of Wilder) He is below Pulev, Haye and Povetkin, but not far off a bonafide shot, in this wasteland of a division.
Of course, he has to dispose of Cunningham first. Impressively too, whether that be by stoppage (difficult) or by an impressive UD. No mean task.

Technically...technically mind, Lewis grew up in Canada and learned much of his trade here as well. So, not exactly British.

Although I'd agree Haye fought far to conservatively , obviously in fear of being overpowered by size and gassing out. He did make Valuev do a funny dance in the last round after he'd broken his hand on Valuev's mahoosive skull.
If he fought Valuev again I'm sure he'd feel far more confident in his power and would go for more damage.

Just in from Twitter...

@boxingbooth: FYI....@mrdavidhaye is NOT fighting on July 6th...yet again immature & childish reporting by a middle England hack!

So that would appear to be that then.

Mmmm ,, I think a lot of you may be jumping the gun here , On paper and in a sensible mans head , Haye should win easy , but i think it all depends on how Hayes Toe has pulled up

I'm guessing Jeff Powell as it was he that broke the Haye returns story in the Daily Hate, I mean Mail earlier in the week.

i thought smith was supposed to fight kenny anderson for the british title but anderson vacated it and then
he was supposed to fight tony dodson and for the vacant title and i never saw it scheduled. also was
wondering if to win the lonsdale outright you had to defend it 3 times successfully or if you just had to
win 3 british title fights. he has won 2 british title fights but only has one defense. if he won the belt back
he would have to defend it twice more to keep it, right? not sure how that works

Fairly certain you have to defend it 3 times in a row. I dont think he is retired.

This site cracks me up , Fury has improved ten fold and hes got to be one the most improved fighters in the uk,not to mention his body condition transformation ...yet still people this site find something to hate on him.
According to most posters on here, Every fight he enters hes gonna get KOed
I have never said i thought Fury would beat a Klit ,but am i only one that thinks he gives Haye a fu*king hard nights work ? this might be a closer fight than most on here would care to even wanna dream about

Whilst i agree with you about the rest i dont think he is on hayes level yet. I cant see them ever meeting in the ring, fury will take hayes mantle of UK number 1 when he retires.

I think win lose or draw Fury will give anyone a fight ,i know people scoff when its said but its true,Fury is bred from long line of fighters and its in his DNA,most just dont get that about his heritage ,they must understand that boxing/fist fighting is a national sport to gypsy culture , a bit just like kicking a football is to most people in houses :D

Not sure what that's got to do with it!

If that's the case then surely every title in the sport would be held by a man from traveller stock. Considering how much fighting and boxing etc is part of the culture, travellers don't really produce many top pros.

I really like Tyson and think he gets bad press from some here but he ain't no more of a fighting man than Haye.

Thats a very sweeping comment and not thought out ,i cant believe you think that , i mean a study has shown that in the UK there are approx. 200,000 romany gypsies/irish travellers living in the country.

So if you consider that out of that small number we have had countless ABA champs,British champions, commonwealth champions,Euro Champions ,world Title challengers and now a fighter (john Maguire) now signed by the Ultimate Fighting championship i am no mathematician but I would say for a very small minority we punch above our weight in fighting sports :box:

On a side note in canada there are less than 100,000 gypsies living there that migrated from the uk during the 1960s, in that country there has been multiple world gypsy champions from the Hilton family .

As you know, i have very strong links to the Traveller community, but the guy is right. Although in the minority in the general population, i would go as far as to say they are in the majority in Amateur Boxing, at least in my region. Every show i go to, which is is quite a lot, it is mainly Traveller and Asian kids on the bill, nearly always juniors. The numbers just seem to drop off as they get to the seniors and then even further when they get to the pro's. The amount of talent in the juniors and amount of junior champions suggest there should have been a Traveller world champ by now. And you cant keep going on about DNA. That would make Fury a dead cert for a journeyman looking at his Father. My Nephew boxed a Traveller and beat him, a Traveller beat someone from our club. Luke Campbell, one of the cleanest cut, nicest kids you could meet, dropped and beat a member of the famous Nevin clan to win Olympic Gold! Its about the individual. Nobody was more upset than me when Wharton lost his World Title challenges buthe would tell you himself he got beat by the better man. Keep an eye out for him on Ringside...

It's not about genes, it's about culture. Fighting is part of the way of life for travellers, and plenty go into boxing, which ensures that plenty go into boxing. Not so many years ago we saw more black kids than anything else coming into the game, now Asians, presumably in the wake of Khan and so on. If you go to white working class areas around the country now, many people won't know where their local gym is, nor no anyone who boxes. Football is now far the preferred route in those areas. (I live in one)

I live in possibly the Whitest, least multicultural city in England, York, and Boxing is booming. Everyone knows where the gyms are and they are full of white and traveller kids, because we dont have any black or asain kids to choose from! Everywhere we go it is a mixture of asian and traveller, but our lads could not care less. Its not about the culture, its about the individual, the talent, the training and the mental strength. And Naz started the ball rolling up here for the asians..

Froch v Dirrell aside :D Micky very rarely i disagree with you ,but on this time we will have to agree to disagree .

Like I said i am no mathematician but work it out if you consider that out of less than a 200,000 ethnic minority we have had countless ABA champs,Olympians, British champions, commonwealth champions,Euro Champions ,world Title challengers and now (john Maguire) now signed by the UFC , in comparison to other minorities that dwarf gypsies by millions are gypsies really under achieving boxing/combat sports ?
Now i agree there is a lot of wasted talent out there but you get that in all walks of life.

You were originally implying that his traveller background is what sets him apart and gives him an advantage though. It doesn't. Travellers are no different in the gym training or in the ring fighting, than people from any other background. They aren't faster, tougher, stronger because of their heritage. It's down to the individual. Plenty of traveller lads are good boxers, plenty are effing crap too!

The traveller community does provide a lot of good fighters considering the size of it, but that's to do with exposure and it being so popular amongst the community meaning a much higher percentage of lads take the sport up to begin with compared to other ethnicities. :TU:

Anyway, as I say, I like the man and will cheer him on when he fights. Just hope for his sake he don't fight Haye! Would be the wrong move.
