Seeing it's been up and running now for a couple of hours, without being taken down, I'll assume the people running this site think this is a suitable topic for Boxrec?

Disgusting.
I don't run BoxRec, but I certainly think it's suitable.

But, more to the point...can you reveal if the funeral will be on B allegedly?
Would it still be suitable if we where talking about Michael Norgrove?
Using the emotive card of the death of Michael Norgrove to defend Thatcher - I have heard it all now.

Don't be a cretin all your life.

What are you talking about? I'm not trying to defend Thatcher for anything. I'm simply querying why such a sick poll, regarding someones death, is allowed on a boxing forum. I'm highlighting if something similar was posted on the site regarding the passing of a boxer I bet it would be removed fairly promptly.

You might not agree with my post but you don't have to call me a cretin.

Well, using the death of Michael Norgrove to make a point. That was pretty low.

This is why we have free speech in Britain. Everyone is discussing her death so surely all of the UK can't be sick?

I find it embarrassing that people are happy. Especially younger people who never formed their own opinion.

I'm neither. Too young.

I know me thing, Brixton is generally full of fvcking morons.

Nothing wrong with freedom of speech. I just never thought I'd see the day when British citizens are prepared to party in the street following the death of someone.

She wasn't a dictator or a murderer she was a Prime Minister and a bloody good one at that.

More commuinities and people have been fucked by labour and the mess is still ongoing.

Show some respect and remove such a vile poll.
She wasn't a murderer? Interesting perspective.

In answer to the poll. Neither.

I find the almost gleeful abuse spewed forth after the death of some old ex prime minister pretty vile and pathetic though.

She's divisive to the point that I don't know what to make of her effect on the UK.

People talk about the effect she had on manufacturing - British factories were producing far more at the end of the 80s than they were in '79...with fewer people. (The only industrialised country to make it through without losing a shitload of people in this era was....Japan, and I find it hard to believe that any union would've allowed the UK workforce to put in those kind of hours in those conditions). GDP rose by an average 2.5% a year over the course of the decade. The right to buy massively increased the quality (and, sadly, price) of housing stock in the country. But the North and Scotland unquestionably took a battering as the state took away subsidies for industries whose main function was to keep people in work rather than produce anything, and the privatisation of a number of industries seemed to run more along ideological than economic lines (water? really? where's the competition aspect in that? where's the incentive to improve service?)

Undoubtedly she made the country more competitive internationally. We were coming out of an era when we were being eaten alive and out-competed by emerging economies and our only answer up to that point had been to borrow more money to pay off the unions and keep whole industries alive when they were failing as businesses. We had had to be rescued by the IMF only half a decade before, such was our inability to run the economy. Some people blame her for exposing the country's industries to 'market forces', as if there is any way on Earth to avoid that happening (how'd that great Communist experiment of politics over economics do, by the way?). But there is no question to me that it could have been done far more intelligently. I don't know; perhaps the combativeness of the era made her approach the only one that could have achieved results. Or perhaps a more patient leader could have found a way to make mining economically possible without destroying it almost entirely.

On section 28, Pinochet, covert operations in Cambodia, the attempted suppression of Spycatcher, stationing of US cruise missiles on our territory and support for apartheid, I can offer nothing in her support and so shall not. In general I would support the re-taking of the Falklands for the simple reason that accepting that a dictatorship should be allowed to march in and invade British territory would have a) negated the whole point of maintaining a defence force and b) made us even more of a laughing stock than we already were following the 1970s.

This lady took her economic mantle from Enoch Powell, who was the ultimate free market capitalist.

She knew that economically he was her guide.

On Europe and Immigration, she did not follow Powell's path although it was clear she knew he was right, and because of this, did not pay the price he paid.

That is why we have UKIP now.

A lad was saying earlier, that he pulled into the garage part of his local Tesco this afternoon and the cashier girl said "That Maggie Thatcher has died today, don't know what all the fuss is about"

He said "Where this giant Tesco used to be, was a coal pit where my dad, my uncle and my grandad all worked. They earned wages to put food on the table, to pay their way in life, to take their kids on holiday and put presents under the xmas tree. And despite there being over 30 years left of coal to mine, she shut the place down. And subsequently, they all sold their cars, start catching buses. The holidays to the seaside stopped for years and his grandad never worked the last 6 years of his working life because he could find no other job. And that as a whole family, they lost about 14 years wages between, from a profitable pit."

- And that's the attitude of all the younger people today at this news - they don't get it. They think this mess has always been here. Well just imagine if every village (let alone every city) had a business that paid well and screaming for more people to come and work for them. A car park full of new cars, paid for with good wages that went straight back into their local community.

Then shut them down, make proud men skint, to give them dole money and take their livelihoods all away. Now they're kids and their grandkids, all litter these areas and have nothing in life except the benefit system. A legacy of poverty and Jeremy Kyle on television.

While the capital sees these bastards get richer and richer, with bonuses bigger than the wages of an entire annual shopping centre of staff.

Once upon a time, these villages and little towns all worked, all earned money in our industries and have self respect.

Probably before you were born.

The rest of the country was financially propping the mines up. Perhaps if we hadn't had both sides butting heads trying to smash the other whatever the consequences (Scargill refusing to hold a ballot and sending his flying pickets around the country; Thatcher sending in the police and stocking up on coal for a strike she knew was coming, before shutting down every single unprofitable mine) a compromise could've been reached and most of the jobs would still be in existence. But the idea that if it weren't for Thatcher everything would have carried on hunky-dory is as unrealistic as the idea that she brought prosperity to the whole country.

We certainly did. The difference is that had we not done so, the financial system would have collapsed within days (and then nobody would be getting paid, whatever industry you worked in); such is the insidious influence of the financial system (way out of proportion to its actual importance) on everything else. And Labour spent 13 years in power not reversing this but extending it!
