you heard of Hagler Hearns youngster? By your own admision you don't know much about boxing.

Hatton took rounds 1,2 & 5. He also won the 6th but got deducted a point for punching a rope. 7,8,9 & 10 was a masterclass but it was a close fight through 6.

I thought the HBO card was well off. I don't see how Hatton was ahead after 5.

That is pretty much my memory of the fight as well. If they allowed Ricky's out-muscle sytle as much as they allowed Floyd's forearm I think he would have won.

I've just been watching it and indeed the HBO guys are giving Hatton a lot of credit and rounds over Floyd. after 3 rounds they have it 2-1 Hatton, and it's also true that they had Hatton winning the round before the point deduction and then they think he'd evened it up. Re watching it after so many years I couldn't help but think Floyd ws taking some of these 'Hatton rounds' but they were close fought and Hatton was landing good shots on Floyd. You can hear them. It's bullshit to say he couldn't land a glove on him. He was in his grill up until the half way mark and then Floyd starts pulling away. I was a big Hatton fan back in those days and didn't know much about boxing otherwise in general, didn't even have the internet to check Floyd out. I thought Hatton was going to be competitive and to give him his due credit he was. He gave him his hardest fight until Cotto I think. It is certainly an entertaining one. Hatton, even when obviously frustrated, did not give up and continued to believe he could make a fight out of it and refused to just 'survive' like, say, Mosely who just stopped fighting or Guerrero. He didn't and he got KO'd. I mean, Floyd fans got their moneys worth. Hatton fans got a big dose of truth.

I was never one of the brigade who blamed Hatton losing on Cortez, and I wasn't well versed enough at the time of originally watching it to pick up on Floyd's elbow, but jeez Cortez is fussy when it comes to the infighting, especially the first few rounds where he breaks them instantly and is constantly on the lookout for anything dirty, at one point crouching down to look up inside a clinch, but Floyd's elbow is in Hatton's face ALL NIGHT, dude. Cortez is a crummy ref. He reffed Khan-Maidana badly too, pushing Maidana around and docking a stupid point in a similar way to Hatton. Maidana and Hatton should have a pint.

Back to the subject, Hatton was a very good fighter and was dominant in his division. I remember watching Bradley fight Witter and thinking Bradley looked very ordinary in winning and that Hatton at the time wouldn't have a lot of trouble beating him. In the same way a lot of people hate on good fighters because of their annoying fans, I think people who were inclined to dislike Hatton because he was British and had a stupid following were also the ones rubbing their little hands with glee when he got KO'd by Floyd and absolutely starched by Pacman. But look, go back and see if you can see any of the current crop of light welters, APART from Matthyse who looks like he punches ridiculously hard, give Floyd that much trouble? I don't think they can.

Cortez was very biased in favour of Floyd - to the extent he starting counting Ortiz even when he didn't see the punches Floyd landed. For all he knew, Floyd could have kicked him in the nuts.
