I reckon the boxer ought to be in a union and get legal advice through the union paid for through his subs; there are lots of advisers etc who do not have a clients interests at heart (think financial advisers etc) and think mostly/only of what is best for them. Having a contract looked over by an expert doesn't mean that there won't be costly legal battles later on, a legal expert will argue whichever side they are getting paid from.

The very ones that are inexperienced and fornicate up in the first place.

As for your cynical view of a legal expert there's no point in reasoning.
Its down to personal choice. I would always say get a good lawyer.
If you don't then you leave the door open.
Wish it wasnt the case but seen some real howlers over the years - and seen some excellent work as well.
You only get what you pay for.

I don't want to be contrary for the sake of it and understand you have a different view of what legal advisers do. I'd have imagined that a boxer and manager contract was pretty straightforward and that every boxer under a particular manager would have a very similar contract.

It's my understanding that unions have decent lawyers working for them and many of them are contract and employment law specialists, because they are salaried and not on a fee basis doesn't mean they on peanuts and many of them do the job, not because they are rubbish but because there are more important things in life than money (to them ).

It may be that you can afford a good lawyer and good luck to you for that, I can imagine that my view could be seen as cynical but in every legal dispute, no matter how tenuous, there is somewhere there harping on and dragging out the process because they are being paid to do so and get paid more the longer it drags on. I know of people who have been actively encouraged to litigate by solicitors when there has been very little chance of a successful outcome and where the ONLY winner has been the solicitors firm.

Where fees are concerned, you don't get what you pay for, you get what the person is able to do and for the amount they have the nerve to charge.

Getting advice from someone is not the same as having a cast iron guarantee of quality, no matter how much you pay for it, also, the person who can afford higher fees can intimidate the other, who may face ruin if a Judgement goes against them, people in the moral right but with little money get run over by individuals and firms charging hundreds an hour and £50 per letter. The legal game is a game and it is run for the players.

But of the British P4P list compiled by Horse and well thought out; only Amir Khan, James DeGale and Frankie Gavin were Olympic competitors and only Froch and Haye can be said to have been elite amateurs, if it were left to elite amateurs to get to the top as pro boxers the television schedules would be few and far between.
