This championship proves that pro-style scoring doesn't work in 3 round amateur bouts.
There were complaints about decision at the Olympics but they;re been so many fights where the home favourite or seeded boxer has won a ridiculous decision.
Bring back the computers.

Ramirez will have to adapt his style. At the Olympics he would spend the first round working out his opponent and then dominating the other rounds. He could lose the first round there but outscore his opponent overall. On the 10 must system you really cant lose the first round and thats what happened here.He lost the first, clearly won the second and IMO the third.
The judges disagreed on the third and gave it to Eraliyev.
Ramirez must start faster in future.
What upset Woodhall was that the judges seemed to value aggression in that fight but not in the Petrauskas bout.He was gobsmacked by the Savon decision and I agree.Savon has had no luck-I felt he did enough to beat Joshua at the Olympics.

The Savon robbery was so disgraceful it makes me so angry. He won all three rounds without any doubt. Mammadov didn´t do anything of note in the first two rounds and in the last when he did connect some he got punished against the ropes hard several times. I have seen it twice and I cannot understand how the English judge could give Mammadov the first two rounds when he barely threw any punsch. And how the other judge could give the last round to Mammadov when he almost got his head knocked off is just crazy.

The Cubans must definetly be appealling the Savon fight, it wasnt even close. The two judges who scored it to Mammadov should be struck off. The aggression thing gets me too sometimes it seems to be all there looking for and other times its totally ignored. Wouldnt be surprised is Kazakhtan win 6 gold at this rate

I agree completely. To me Ramirez did too little too late. He won the last round but gave away the first and the kazakh boxed well in the second. He did the same thing when he lost to Misha Aloyan at the last Worlds. With the new system you cannot take any chances. That´s why I don´t understand some cuban boxers are content to move and occasionally score. It´s obvious not all judges favor that type of boxing. In the evening session the cuban boxers were more active and won.

I have been in boxing since the 60's to date and it seems every ten years this situation gets worse for amateur boxing.
The streets are winning the battle for these kids. SAD SAD
How do you explain Usa having 6 boxers in Pros the best on planet in their weight class? Hopkins,Ward,Mayweather,Bradley, Danny Garcia and Mikey Garcia are all the very best on the planet and only 1 of them was the best in the very suspect international Amatuer game.
Ireland have a good amateur programme and reward their am fighters well. They, like India too, seem to groom their fighters for the amateur system it must be said. The US seems to have a different approach. They seem to have an eye on the longer game, its clear as day that the US produce better pro's than ams. I mean, how many Irish and Inidan world titlists do you ever see? Barely even see challengers from these nations let alone dominant champions.
Ireland have plenty of good pros but a very small amount of pro shows, its true the Americans have much better pros but that to be expected with the size difference. Irelands amateur system is the envy of many nations no doubt but we have some decent pros like Carl Frampton, Jamie Kavanagh, Ryan Burnett, Andy Lee just to name a handful.

Don't know the Usa men's team but know the Jr team well. Usa Jr team had at least 6 boxers make it to final 16 at World Championships, with 2 boxers only 15 and one only 14 , and was victim of extreme bias judging in final 16 costing Team more medals.Us women's Jr and Youth won 4 Golds at World Championships and sum other medals. Don't know what the case is with men team Usa but do know that Usa is not the most liked country on planet.
The trick is keeping these kids in the gym and boxing as amateurs. Too many turn pro too early or quit the game for many different reasons.

The home nation syndrome is always in play for all high level tournaments. Go back and look at results of past Olympics and world championships for starters....the home country always gets more medals than they normally do. I think it has something to do with the judging in that the officials usually get treated well at tournaments and they feel bad to go against the home country plus the home country will always have more fans and the judges don't want to piss them off.

What a fight between Alexander Besputin, Russia and Gabriel Maestre, Venezuela! The russian has been one of the most impressive in the tournament and was also in this fight, until he got hit with a great left hook at the end of the first and took some time to recover. Maestre gave the russian two standing eights in the second round before Besputin came back. In the last he was chasing Maestre but got nailed again at the end. Great win for Maestre.

There had to be something going on because no one in there right mind would have taught Mammadov won the fight. You wonder what Savon must be thinking he outboxes Joshua at the olympics and gets robbed now he gets robbed at the worlds, if he was from any other country rather than Cuba he would probebly go pro now in disgust

Agree with you to an extent but it's a hell of a lot easier to make sure you get the "right" winner if it's one move of a judge's pen that decides.
I remember Olympics from the 70s and 80s where the decisions were a million times worse than ones with computer scoring.
It looks we're going back 30 years to those days.

Great fights tonight but what a robbery of the home fighter Kairat Eraliyev, KAZ against Javid Chalabiyev AZE!!!!! After two rounds I thought the kazakh has to be the best boxer of the tournament. The final round was closer though he was still outboxing his opponent at times. When the split decision was announced nobody could believe it. What is it with these azerbaijani fighters getting so many wrong decisions??? The other day Teymur Mammadov won a highway robbery over Erislandy Savon and now this...
I belive AIBA wants Clemente Russo to win (WSB boxer) the 91 kg, then Savon had to lose because he would beat Russo. So to not upset the azerbaijans because both Mammadov and Medzhydov might lose, then another azerbaijan boxer had to win (even if it was against the kazakh). I can´t find an honest explanation to this and it makes me so disgusted.

De La Cruz really outmoved Ward altough i think if Ward would have just applied relentless pressure and tried to rough him up and outmuscle him he could have won, he tried to beat him at his own game and De La Cruz is impossible to beat if you try to outbox him, tactics were all wrong but his only 19 and will definetly learn from this fight ,although i dont know if he will ever have the beatings of Cruz over 3 rounds. Doesnt look huge for the weight and doesnt look like he hits that hard but his speed is ridiculous he moves like a flyweight. His a great amatuer but i think he wouldnt make a great pro. Will be interesting to see if they meet in the wsb over 5 rounds. I'd put my house on Cruz winning gold. The Cuban welterweight Despaigne is probebly been my favorite boxer of the tournament stylewise, he slips punches brilliantly and is very fun to watch great body and head movement

I saw Medzhidov's last two fights, Cammarelle and Dychko. He has some good skills and obviously has power. Being only 27, I can see him being a sought after pro following this tournament (maybe by K2 Promotions - both Vitaly and Wlad were in attendance). He supposedly has signed up for APB but they had said the same thing about Lomachenko and Falcao. I cannot see how APB will be able to pay him more than a non-AIBA promoter at heavyweight.

The Azeri's have been good at keeping their best fighters amateur (no doubt with massive secret payouts) so he certainly could stay with AIBA.

Lets see what happens with APB. First they announced it would begin in the fall of 2013. Then the exhibition bouts that were supposed to have happened have not come off which is a bad sign (not to mention embarrassing). They have so far failed to secure a single gold medallist from London, with 7 out of 10 turning pro outside of AIBA. Will they have the star power to secure TV revenue?

Can anyone tell me what type of scoring went on as far as I see 10 point system was thrown out the window. Is there a newer system and was this tournament without headgears?

Each round is scored on the 10 point system and the scores are summed at the end.

Example:

Round 1: 10-9
Round 2: 10-9
Round 3: 10-9
Total: 30-27

Assuming each judge scored the fight as such, you'd get 30-27 + 30-27 + 30-27 for a total of 90-81. While 5 judges score each bout, a computer randomly selects 3 of those judges and only their scores count.
