Jesus Christ this was the mans debut and he did well. How anyone can draw conclusions from that is beyond me!

I liked the way he punched in combinations. Sick of European one-punch-and-clinch guys at the top. I hope they keep him active, have him fight a range of styles to develop a boxing IQ, and, most importantly, keep him punching in threes & fours, Riddick Bowe-style.

He stopped him in the first so his power can't be that bad. Let's get real here, it was a good performance.

well he doesn't seem to have huge one punch power but he still stopped an unbeaten fighter after 2 minutes. let's not act like the struggled today. he had a good debut that ended like a debut should (1st round KO).
He was fighting a undefeated guy who hadn't fought outside of Italy and was several levels below him.. I was impressed with what he done but both him And Luke Campbell should be fighting at domestic level. Both excellent amateur pedigree don't need those fights.. Campbell should be test someone the Scotty Cardle or Maxi Hughes.. Joshua should be in with Towers or Rogan
lewis, tyson, ali and klitschko were excellent amateurs too.

their first opponent:

Ali: tunney hunsaken (15-9) followed by a 1-1 fighter
lewis: al malcom (11-12) followed by a 5-10 guy
tyson:hector mercedes (0-3!) followed by a 1-3 guy
wladimir: fabian meza (4-1) followed by a guy with 30 losses

of course klit, ali and tyson where a little younger but lennox was the same age. that kind of build up is perfectly normal, even for olympic champions that go on to become all time greats. why should joshuas team leave this proven path of building up guys? all of those 4 greats fought at least 10 bums before they stepped up a little (however they fought basically every month so they had their 10 bums within one year which is how it should be no need for long camps if you fight bums).

it's ok if he fights 5-6 more bums and then slightly steps up.

I also don't see how people can already conclude that his power is a weakness based on a lone fight that he won by first round stoppage. Were there signs in the amateurs that he lacked power?
yes there were signs he lacked power in the ams and he was up against a fighter who's record was 8-0 and most recent win was a points win against a fighter with 3 wins and 31 losses last night.

We all watch boxing we know weather a fighter has power or not, we all could see David Price and Tom Dallas had power from the get go and that Eubank Jr lacks it. Its not a science he hit his opponent clean god knows how many times and it was an accumulative effect that took its toll, he is either still in his amature mode of not throwing full blooded snapping shots or he doesnt have it in his arsenal.

Sorry but fighting someone at the level he was fighting last night, with his amateur pedigree, a quick win isnt as impressive as it could have been. As i said before agogo outboxed then nearly took his opponents head off with a beautiful overhand right in his debut, in comparison Joshua bludgened a pub fighter into submission and showed a lack of power and defensive skills. Maybe thats down to nerves and over eagerness but that doesnt exempt such a prospect having is performance dissected when he is being hyped in the manner he is.

Looks like I'm in the minority but I thought he looked good. Looked nice and relaxed, lovely jab, crisp straight shots didn't rush when he had him hurt. Let's see how he does over the next 12 months but I think we could have someone special

there were plenty of positives but the problem is he is being hyped as the next big thing, i which case people will look at the negatives and there were negatives.

Your not in the minority. He did look good!! As for other comments about these other fighters such as Tyson, Lewis and Wlad.. Yes as people put it they thought bums.. It doesn't make it right!! The boy last night could of got seriously hurt.. I don't mind going in with journeymen but ones that know how to deal with those kind of shots

i agree there are plenty of "professional" journeymen who make a living out of being stepping stones who know how to protect themselves and ask a few questions of their opponent, plenty of british ones to be fair.

I will forgive last night's opponent but if we don't see Joshua in with Arreola or Stiverne next we can safely conclude the whole thing is a joke.

On a more serious note the guy I feel sorry for is David Price, he has suddenly ended up in British boxing's no-mans land. At the top of the domestic tree we have Haye, Fury and a rejuvenated Chisora. At ground level we have Joshua, with Hughie Fury a few months ahead of him in progress and already getting national TV coverage.

Poor old Price is something of yesterday's news despite still being British champ. He's not a prospect, he's not a top level fighter, and he's written off in some quarters as fit for the knackers yard.

I think he'll come good, and I half expect him to be a bit more vicious in future. There must be a lot of frustration building up in him and he has learned the hard way about not finishing off an opponent. I wouldn't want to be his next opponent. Good luck David.

Good start from Joshua. Looked comfortable with the occasion, threw nice loose combo's, showed a degree of patience, looks the effing part physically. Oh and he caught Ian John Lewis with a nice left to top it off.

Defence obviously needs some work but in no way does he look like your typical British heavyweight tuning pro.

Onwards! :bag:

Would love to see a Tim Witherspoon, Riddick Bowe, or Tony Tubbs type brought in to co-train Joshua, working on his technical game.

Lets face it there is no way the Hearns would let Joshua near Dillian Whyte he would get destroyed.

And whats with the introduction "Future Peoples Champion"

Great start to the pro ranks, I actually like Joshua and think hes got a great future in the sport. Time will tell. I think they are hyping him up like a young Frank Bruno, similar body and stature. He beat a 8-0 so the Italian had experience of the ring, not necessarily of the craft. But you cannot put Josh in with a decent pro for his first fight. Heavyweight boxing in the UK is looking up in my opinion and around 6 or 7 more fights he could well be matched up with a decent name in the British rankings.

Its too soon to be clear how good the lad is going to be but I hope he isnt another Fraudley and falls by the way side in 10 fights time. Lets judge the lad in 6 months time when hes had 3 or 4 fights and see how he's progressing. The state of heavyweight boxing today we could well have a world champ in the next few years.

Brilliant start, you can only knock over who's in front of you.

You might be in the minority, mate, but it doesn't mean you're wrong. There have been a boat load of shite posts in this topic - yours is definitely not one of them. That was a very solid début performance. I like the way he stalks rather than kangaroos, I like his 1-2, I like his composure. He's raw but he's got a lot of potential. Good match, good start.

Edit: I'd bin the 'People's Champion' tag. That's a bad idea. Don't force that idea on people, they'll resent it.

He needs developing slowly, he has very little experience as an amateur. after his debut i'd like him in learning fights taking him rounds on undercards, so he can work on his techniques.

he has so much raw abillity its unreal, but he can't be rushed.

if he hits British level between 20-30 fights I'll be happy.

Agree with all but the 20-30 fights. British Title contender in 10-15 fights would be better, imo.

No wonder depression is so rife in boxing, the majority of it probably stems from this forum

I agree guys. Looked like he has a lot of potential to me - time will tell.
The British heavyweight scene is quite bright at the moment with Haye, Tyson Fury and Chisora. Hughie and Joshua look like good prospects and hopefully David Price will come good.

I just had to rub my eyes and read some posts again !

There is no way some of these posts have been written with a straight face, about a guy who's had 1 fight.

The questioning is BECAUSE of how many of those accurate rights he had to deliver to get the guy down...
