But yeah, stoppages are forced through brute force and brute force alone. #topboxingexpertise

Leonard could do it all, above all that he was one of the smarter fighters in history and he isn't going to slug it out with someone like Trinidad when he doesn't have to. I'm not downplaying Ray, you're acting like the other guys are just cannon fodder and leonard was George Foreman.

It's got nothing to do with slugging it out or even power itself. Top technicians like Leonard know how to pace themselves and know how to break opponents down. You don't need to load up on every single shot before the other guy can no longer absorb the shots; a simple jab can do the job, in addition to a good, concentrated body attack. Having great punch placement, real variety in your offence and a general unpredictability in your attack always helps a great deal, too.

Trinidad was strong and durable, but his balance wasn't the best, not much in the way of head movement and he could be hurt - and as they say: it's the punches you don't see that hurt the most, and Leonard was an outstanding finisher.
I think stating that leonard was flat footed fighter is as inaccurate as the press calling him a dancing ali clone.
as i said earlier, i got into this era late, but i have literally just watched every significant fight he was in, including a few amateur bouts including the full olympic run in montreal and i think it would be unfair to pidgeon hole leonard as either.
he was capable of fighting either way. but he was a slick fighter and technician and even in his more aggressive, flat footed come forward performances he never ever stood toe to toe in a slugfest the way he did with duran in the first fight.
i never really took that second round into my assessment of the fight, but i thought leonard came out the way he did from the first second of the first round and remained that way for the entirety of the fight. i really think it was a tactical choice and it was a mistake to do so.

i may be wrong, but i'll get another chance to judge it soon. i've got a 20 dvd collection of duran fights to work my way through over the next month, so around disk 14, i'll get to enjoy this cracker again.

i'll get back to y'all, let you know what i think after i see it again.
