Not sure he was considered washed up? Quarry was actually counted out but was wining the fight however it was a highly contentious stoppage, Quarry was furious claiming he couldn't hear the count and thought he got up at 9 with only seconds to spare in the round.

“Nobody knocks me out,” Quarry insisted. “I was looking at the clock and I couldn’t hear the count because the crowd was yelling so much. I got gypped. I got ruined. That destroyed me. I could have gotten up. I couldn’t tell the count by his (Clayton’s) fingers.”

Hey quit confusing ol Ducher and attempting to slow his progress...eh or digress whatever.....

.....he steamrolls right past logic, facts, good info, documents, credible eyewitness, consensus and sensibility. To him each of those is considered potential future road kill under his heavy (likely due to the over use of lead though he claims gold) unstoppable steam rollin' machine!

I shall accept your help then. Thanks for the heads up!

By the way "who" considered him washed up? As I was not one of them...and you did not consult me on this.

Ok...assuming that quote is real.......we got that one guy Oh...and let's not forget Jake down at Ace Hardware.....however, honestly....I think most people agreed with Jerry's self assessment.

He did not look like he was quitting.....did he to you? What was your take on what you viewed?

Ok...well maybe you are well advised to listen to Teddy....otherwise you are left with just your lyin' eyes.

And I'm not sure they have served you well....however, another option is to go with the greater consensus.

Wisdom on occasion can be achieved mathematically.

The man lived it, close and up front. Not on Memorex.

If he said Jerry was 'worn out', then he was.
I thought he said he "may" be washed up?

So washed up that 3 years later he stopped Shavers in one round and beat the unbeaten Lyle?

His Chuvalo moment was a robbery.....but Jerry had it coming even by his own admission, as he made a mistake.....mistake or no...he owned it. But he was winning the fight....and probably would have won had he paid better attention...or not had that moment of bad luck.

The Frazier fight was a classic.....no shame in getting beaten by that walking land mine. And as you all have pointed out, Quarry came back and offered up some great stuff after that.

So as is typical....El DoChew is running his comedy act again. Hell, he might be worth a cover charge at a stand up comedy club. He's worked up some funny material. It's why I stay tuned. I wasn't mad at his geometry thread, just thought those tidbits could be worked into his ongoing threads rather than take up further real estate. I hope he picks up on that...I think it had the makings of a good sports comedy sketch.

FFS, when will this rubbish end? Now Quarry was "washed up" when Ali beat him.

Simple question Il Duce:

Is there anyone who you consider Ali beat in their prime? ie. they weren't handicapped, too old, too slow, too fat, too small, too young, one armed, retarded, blind in one eye etc etc.

Anyone who you consider lost to Ali because well, Ali was simply the better fighter?

You don't "say" anything, because you don't have the balls to just directly state your opinion. All you do is make up quotes and insinuate all kinds of nonsense.

Il Duce wrote:Grevan, you filthy word-twister

I never said Jerry Quarry was 'washed up' when he fought Muhammad Ali n October 1970.

The phrase was 'washed up and worn out' in December 1969 after getting KO'd by George Chuvalo.

Words used by Teddy Brenner of Madison Square Garden.

And, most boxing pundits felt that Jerry had been 'run-through-the-mill' in 1970.

Yet, Ring Magazine did have Jerry rated at #1 in October 1970, and he was #3 WBA.

Jerry got it together in 1970, and was 'ready' to Rock-n-Roll in October.
That'll do me.

Being called a "word-twister" by someone who sits at his keyboard all day typing out ludicrous, imaginary quotes is well, in the words of Andy Dufresne*, obtuse. If you don't think he was "washed up" and you can in some way diminish yet another Ali victory then what, dare I ask, is the point of the thread?

And by the way, you haven't answered the question...

* for those that don't know, the main character in The Shawshank Redemption. It seems fitting to quote a fictional character in one of Il Duce's threads.

But with the benefit of hindsight we all know he was far from washed up in 1970 regardless of what Brenner or anyone else said at the time. Quarry was a very tough opponent for Ali in his comeback fight, how can that even be debatable?

So actually quite a tough comeback opponent for someone out the ring for 3.5 years don't you think?

Jerry was 'worn-out', by having too many tough bouts.

Would lead anyone with boxing knowledge to come to the conclusion that Jerry Quarry had been,

* Run-through-the-mill
* Worn-out from too many tough bouts
* Looked washed-up
* Dropped from the #1 Contender to #6
* Not tending to staying in condition
Except you have already contradicted yourself by first saying you agreed he was worn out. Plus you agreed with Brenner assessment that he was "washed up". Then you say he was still highly ranked and was in good shape and ready in 1970. So what is it?

Jack Quarry,

"Jerry will be back. It was just a 'bad' night with Chuvalo. Jerry was having things his own way,
and then he got confused after the knockdown."

"Jerry may have been a bit 'worn-out' from too many bouts, and may have lost focus."

"We want Joe Frazier again, or if Muhammad Ali can get his license back we'll take him on in Miami Beach.
We're supposed to fight Ali's sparring partner {Rufus Brassell} in Miami Beach the first week of March.
He's an 'Ali-imitator', so we'll see how things cook down in Florida."
So you accept Quarry was washed up and lost focus from quotes from third parties but when Tyson says he didn't train properly for Douglas he is lying? Isn't that double standards, you know conveniently cherry picking what you want to believe?

At the time, Mike Tyson was presumed invincible.

Jerry was coming off a brutal loss to Joe Frazier in June 1969.

Jerry was a 'solid' 3-1 Betting-Favorite over George Chuvalo, but it was expected to be a good brawl.
Ok, so in your opinion was Quarry washed up when he fought Ali?
