I Started at 26. Walked in the gym with no real idea. Other than the fact I wanted to get fit and learn to box at the same time. I ended up the fittest I've ever been. I never had any am or pro fights and probably only sparred may 25-30 rounds but trained with a local pro everyday and went to all his pro fights, I made some great friends and had a great trainer who is now my brothers father in law.

Boxing and training at that gym is one of a very small list of things I miss about living in the UK.

Boxing will give you back as much as you put in. Treat it with respect and it will get under your skin course through your vain's and leave you hanging for the next time you can walk through the door and smell the stale damp air that only a boxing gym seems to have.

This is my 33-year-old, never boxed a round in my life opinion. But plenty of people haven't turned pro until their late 20s. I'm sure we can all name pros that have done that.

Obviously, they don't have the longest careers, but some people who have started at that age have gone on to be say British Champions. You're younger than some when they've started, so why not give it a go.

One thing I do remember Freddie Roach saying a little while back was that age isnt as much a factor in boxing as the wear and tear of fights, etc. He was saying how guys who have had a lot of amateur bouts can already be on the way to being shot at a pretty young age. Obviously that doesnt factor in learning the fundamentals and so on of course though.

I'm 5'10" and 10st 2 lb (64-65kgs)

I'm now in Sydney. This place has very little boxing but at least I have ifltv and worldboxingvideoarchive to keep me sane.

I found myself chatting to a couple of Darlington fans the other day who mentioned Hall's walk-on with his belt at the football. I found myself wondering afterwards what would have happened in a match-up between Hall, and another nort-east man not that many years ago, Micky Hunter. Not sure if Hall's a super-bantam or a feather. I think Hunter would have had too much for him imho.
That said - I do think it's a terrific story what Stuart has done. It's inspirational really, as it seems he could have easily gone the other way. It's like he had some kind of epiphany to get his life back together. That by itself is something to be proud of.

There is only a tiny percentage who started late and had a credible pro career, but that is no reason to no have a go and see where it takes you.
Boxing benefits you in so many ways regardless of your level.
I would advise anyone to go down there local amateur gym to see what it is like.
Often the white collar stuff is a gym about making a profit where you can punch the bags/pads, be told you are great etc without experiencing the real blood, sweat and tears of the sport.

Ive never had any involvement with the whole white collar scene but do believe it has a place somewhere if done properly. Just also heard too many stories of people been pasted as-well

I had 32 Amateurs last one being in 2004 then f ucked the game off then after having two unlicensed bouts cancelled on days of bouts decided to take an offer from a north-east manager of signing pro I turned over at 29.People said I was to old I said I'm not I had 3 yrs as a pro and loved every minute of it.Never to old mate!!!

Did you win anything farmer ? Or fight for any titles ?

I started training at an ABC aged 42. Obviously can't compete, but love the training and the intensity. Also have private lessons and sparring, so starting boxing in your early twenties is no issue at all.

Finished with a record 7-10-1,boxed for British Masters in last fight then retired at aged 32.Very happy with my career,never looked back.

Finally got myself down Long Eaton ABC. Bout bleedin time!

At your age you could have a 10 year amateur career ahead of you.

There is an ex pro taking classes near the inlaws and I might join-in to get fit etc. I don't want a "boxercise" type of class full of birds, but I am also not looking to spar etc.

Cheers mate. Really enjoyed it to be fair. One of the old boys took me on the pads to advise on my technique for jabs and straight rights. He made me throw the left jab n said there's nothing wrong with that so moved on straight away! Then when he got me doing combos he said he was really impressed with my power and when I get used to the defensive aspect I could do OK. It was good coz even though it was my first session, if I threw a 1-2 and my right hand came back slowly, he'd slap me round the jaw pretty hard so I wouldn't do it again, same to the body if my elbows weren't tucked in. Good stuff.

My mate just started boxing last year at 29,he's had 3 fights now,2 losses on points and a KO win sandwitched in between

That KO must've felt gd! Is he enjoying it?

Yeah he loves it mate,he's been bitten by the bug,he's getting right into the sport and the boxers etc

I'm the same. Started training aged 41, a couple months ago. Loving it. No intention of fighting, but feeling fitter and met great people. and, they can hold their own in a conversation about boxing, without just quoting what they read in the sports pages of the sun.
