I'd put Froch, Groves, DeGale, Fielding and his own brother in front of him, if Brian Magee intends on returning that would make him #7 in the country in my eyes, if he doesn't then he's #6, although it could be argued he's as high as 4.

To call him undeserving of a world title shot is hyperbole. I would argue that he is more deserving than most of todays challengers, considering the proliferation of belts
Plenty of people thought Rees won that fight, Crolla was far from a clear winner. It's not hyperbole at all, claiming he is worthy of a shot is hyperbole, he's done nothing to earn one, regardless of whether others that have got that opportunity have. If he can beat Marsili or someone at a similar level, then we can start talking world title fights, until then, he's nothing more than a domestic level fighter on a decent run of form at that level.
Rees was a European champion just months before CROLLA BEAT HIM, and had only lost to Broner in the meantime.

With all due respect, this is a case of you thinking Crolla is domestic class, so anyone he beats is domestic class, because he couldn't beat them otherwise. Sod the fact that Rees was a long running Euro champ who only vacated months before...he was a domestic operator, because was able to Crolla beat him.

I'm amazed you can't see the shaky standing of that argument

Rees had just been beaten up by Broner and by that point, yes, he was domestic level. Even his European title wins came against some average opposition, Murray, Mathews and Mezaache are all pretty average and the beating he took from Broner almost certainly took something out of him, physically and mentally. Are you seriously trying to suggest a man that twice couldn't beat Derry Mathews should be mixing it with the likes of Crawford, Vazquez, Gamboa, Abril and Burns? If Crolla can beat someone like Marsili, or even Kevin Mitchell, then he might deserve a world title fight.

And go easy on the fvcking capitals, I can read you know.

If I had the energy, I would trawl through these guys respective opponents and find all the quality operators who had to jump through numerous hoops to earn their world title shots. I don't....but off the top of my head, i wonder how elite level Burns managed to get his shot? Seems he got it by getting thumped by Arthur and Johanneson, and beating Gomez and Kevin O Hara.

Yet in your world Crolla beats Rees, Murray...then IF he beats Marsili or Kevin Mitchell, he MIGHT deserve a title shot...fornicate me, that's some stiff criteria in today's climate, and smacks of a pig headedness

Burns didn't deserve the title shot either, fair play to him he took it with both hands and proved himself to be world clas, but in no situation did he deserve the shot. It's not stiff criteria, if a fighter wants to earn a title shot, they have to beat fighters of that sort of calibre, it's possible to get one without doing that, but it doesn't mean that they deserve it in any way.

I actually hate the proliferation of titles. There are so many avenues for guys to take, that very rarely do you have a guy 'earning it'.

We have final eliminators with guys fighting average guys from South America, who are shipped in to lose. In that current climate, Crolla beating a recent, long running European champion, and the likes of Murray is actually earning it more than the majority.

I would love to go back to the days of the number two and three fighting for the right to fight number one, but it ain't there. Not yet anyway

I don't particularly mind having 4 belts, the IBO, WBU, WBF etc. can fvck off, but it does make it a bit easy to get a title shot, at the same time it gives fighters the opportunity to earn better money and I don't begrudge them that, I'd just like to see more unification fights, stop the talk, lets see who's really the best in the division.

Big time....Those champs really should fight each other. Crolla wouldn't be the fave in any opf those fights.

My issue in general is the continual degredation of what he is doing. If Eddie gets him a shot, then we will have threads asking how the hell he has got a shot. But people will be lazy and not look at the numerous guys less deserving fighting for world titles.

I remember when he beat Rees in an eliminator (seems it was only an eliminator for Burns' title if Rees won) We had posts giving the six guys Crolla needed to beat to win the world title shot. He had to beat all these guys mind...nothing like making him prove more than any fighter since the 1970's.

Just peed me off...the layering of titles winds me up and all. Four champs in each organisation...jesus.

Ricky Burns has allegedly to thank for his world title shot.

Paul Smith has allegedly to thank for his world title shot, without Warren's 'in' with the WBO Smith wouldn't be in the rankings

Would be funny if Warren used his connections with the WBO to get one over on Paul and see suddenly dropped right down the rankings haha

Paul's a soft defence for top kids! Can't stand the lads arrogance!! Petrified of losing, so he don't blow his chance with Abraham! The fights in autumn or the date is, which could be against another name .
Callum smith should of been fighting for his bro's title tonight IMO

"You dont get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate"

Smith is like an all time great compared to some of the fighters that we've had over here to "challenge" for titles against our "champions" since the year 2000.

How many world champions would the UK have had since 1990 if there was only 1 belt per division? Thats a question worthy of a new thread

I can see this fight being competition regardless of whether Smith deserves it or not.

Abraham is not the beast he was and certainly no puncher at the higher weight. He should still have enough to win though and it would surely spell the end for Smith.

Smith is still a good fighter and hits hard; I don't think he'll win the title but think he'll go in there to win, not to make the numbers up. I thought he was a touch brittle when he posted on here but he's a decent commentator. I don't understand the hate.

The thing is crolla didn't beat him it was close but Rees should have got the majority decision easily watch the fight again and you will agree

Yeah, he can be a bit surly, but he does catch a bit of unecessary heat.

It's a WBO title fight, can't really understand why people are so confused. There's a long, long list of unworthy WBO title challengers, and smith is far from the worst. He has a nice looking record (number wise) so he fits the bill.

We haven't seen Callum fight anyone nearly good enough to suggest he could hang with Abraham right now.
I agree. Which is why I say chance, much bigger chance than his brother

Tobias Webb would be a 50/50 with Paul. Callum is performing how you would expect someone in Paul's position to be. Paul's opponent was pathetic, but then he's no greater then domestic level. I thought quigley won v smith & Dodson 2 was against a shot dodson who'd been ironed out at l.heavy & boiled down & it was close till halfway point where Dodson died

Smith is ranked and is seen as beatable, he is typical for a voluntary defense

I noticed Will McIntyre is still fighting. He could be a candidate for worst contender for this very title.

That is opinion...it isn't an opinion shared by the majority, In fact it is mostly held by guys who are on Gav Rees's Facebook. :OhYes:

But that is the beauty of scoring. In my world Curtis Woodhouse isn't British champion as Hamilton should have got it, but when he goes home that doesn't matter as Woodhouse sees the Lonsdale belt on his wall. And he gets ranking points and the kudos attached

I agree that I think Crolla probably did deserve the win against. We do have to wonder how much Rees has slipped though in all honesty. I dont think the likes of Mitchell and co would struggle with Buckland to the same extent IMO.

It might be my opinion but try watching it again on mute coz all glen mcCrory did was cream over crolla when Rees was out working him and out boxing crolla. And I ain't on Facebook
