I'm not a Cuban worshiper at all. I think they're often overrated simply because they're Cuban, and I think Lara in particular has been overrated for years. If I wanted someone to win the fight last night it was Alvarez, and there is a good case that he did win, but I saw it the other way by a few rounds.

Horse does have a penchant for hyperbole. He also places Rigondeaux at #5 p4p. So words and actions don't always align.

Idk how the main 3 Cubans everyone talks about are overrated & idk that anyone besides them get all that much hype to even be considered overrated. And Erislandy easily could have gotten the nod last nite. Idk how overrated a guy can be who barely loses to the #1 guy in his division.

For years I've heard from many people that Lara would thrash everyone in the division, including Canelo, when more often than not he'd give lackluster performances that didn't correspond with those predictions. The same people also seemed to forget that he was held to a draw by and arguably deserved to lose to Carlos Molina, who gets rated highly by very few.

Rigo is overrated in my opinion because he regularly appears in the upper-half of P4P lists (like Horse's) even though Donaire is his only standout win and he had problems with Marroquin and Cordoba. To me, he hasn't done enough to show that he's as good as many people say he is, whether in terms of resume or ability.

As for other Cubans, from what I've gleaned from posts on various forums they get more highly praised and more attention is given to them than to non-Cuban fighters with comparable records and performances. I think much of that has to do with the veneration for the Cuban boxing program, which leads many to conclude that if someone was raised in that program they must be particularly good and have the potential to be a top pro.

According to CompuBox he threw only 29 fewer punches than Canelo. When Lara was 'running' Alvarez wasn't doing much punching himself, and he typically threw single shots.

The 'running' is being blown out of proportion. It's not like he was moving the entire time and never bothered to punch.

The idea that Lara is over rated I really don't understand. Even if you scored that fight for Canelo then Lara still had a very close fight with a guy who The Ring magazine have in their top 10 p4p and many people talk about like he's the future of boxing.... If anyone is over rated its obviously Canelo.

He might not be overrated after last night (or even after the Angulo fight). My post was about the last few years in general.

Lara is legit no doubt about that.

Imo Lara beats any other jmw he just lost a close one last that's it.

After a tight first 4 rounds, Canelo simply imposed his strength on Lara.
Much bigger, much stronger. It looked like a middleweight vs. a welterweight.

The Mexican won going away. But someone should tell the kid that it´s okay to move your head. Saw no ability to slip a punch to the head.
Didn`t matter against the light punching Lara. It might matter when Canelo moves up to middleweight and he faces some stronger bangers who won´t be pushed around by him.

Lara won the fight if that was an Olympic fight, professional boxing is about landing meaniful punches

and Lara landed the more meaningful punches

Fair enough on the Erislandy & Guillermo assessments. I think if they weren't Cuban it'd be the same difference, but we're not gonna Agree about them I suppose.

As for the allure of the Cuban amateur system I definitely understand & somewhat agree with your overall thoughts there, but for me that background represents a higher level of trial by fire than the average boxer has been though & it does get some extra respect because of that fact. I remember how I used to see a guy in those old gold Kronk trunks & how that represented something more then some guy from Idaho in his camo trunks represented. For me it's the same deal with these Cuban amateur system guys.

I thought Lara edged it, 115-113 either way. Canelo's body shots were the only thing he did effectively all night. That being said, no way Lara was getting a nod in a fight that tight. I was shocked he caught one of the cards.

I am not a Floyd hater, and I am not the only one who sees one reason in most of Brut's posts. Being a fan of Floyd, BHop, Andre, Bradley and other fighters who are known for their defensive skills (and low work rate for some of them), he refuses to give Lara the same treatment. If any of the fighters I named were in Lara's place, they would be declared winners by judges and Brut.

I picked Canelo. The landed punches were very close, as was the fight. But I edged it in Canelo's favor because he was trying hard to make the fight. If he could have effectively cut off the ring, it would have been a decisive win for Alvarez.

Lara outboxed him. It was close, but Lara was the clear winner.
