I can probably make another comparison, which suits British fans, and that was in the "semi-pro" leagues during the 1970s. It was the "make it or break it" contest for Cliff Fields. Anyone who recalls Cliff will say he was probably the best of the so-called hardmen on the unlicensed circuit. He defeated Lenny McLean and others by first round kayos. Then, his management arranged him to take on the respectable (though far from world class) Richard Dunne. People today remember Dunne best as being the last man Muhammad Ali ever knocked out.

Needless to say, though Cliff was a good fighter in his own right (amateurs, military boxing leagues, short pro career) the disparity between him and a former European champion (when that title still meant something) like Dunne, was not only obvious it was embarassing. Dunne, calm and collective, picked apart Cliff whenever he felt like it. After the fact Dunne said "I knew he was not in my class," and that was the end (essentially) for Fields.
