There are multiple reasons why Ward tore Dawson a new one, whereas Hopkins got clearly schooled by him. Ward would have dominated Jean Pascal as well. If anyone in this thread tries to claim that Ward has a worse chance against Kovalev than Hopkins did, then they don't know sh*t about boxing. You might as well claim that Mayweather is not as good as Erislandy Lara and/or doesn't have as good of defense, or would have less of a chance of beating Alvarez.
Ward is
a little bit over-rated. Note the bold print. Froch is second best in his division yet has no great boxing skill just incredible heart and even more incredible stamina. Froch is a genuine hard man but not a great boxer.
The Ring can rate whoever, whatever they like they are not god and they don't have a domination on being correct.
Ward is very, very good BUT he's far from unbeatable.
Ward would not beat Kovalev or Golovkin. Unfortunately i can't see these fights ever happening.

You're kidding right? You think Ward is scared of a smaller man? You must be high.
Kovalev? Well, that remains to be seen. He is a monster.
No, no. Sometimes it's not just about size it's about levels. Manny Pacquiao is stones lighter than me but i guarantee he'd kick my arse from London to Sydney. Let's just wait and see. It's not really worth my while arguing the point the actions will speak louder.

Dude, Andre Ward is not only bigger than the guys GGG has fought, he's also about 27 levels better in literally every way, shape or form. GGG is a great fighter but it's absurd that some people cant appreciate how skilled Ward is. He is univerally #2 p4p and thats with barely fighting the last 2-3 yrs. Why do you think he's rated with Mayweather? Because he's that good, and unlike GGG, has actually fought and dominated top shelf opposition.

No he's not mate, he really isn't but if you want to believe that then fine bud, that's your prerogative.

Oh he's not worlds better than Marco Rubio or Curtis Stevens and Danny Geale? You really must be high. These guys would have gotten the living sh*t beaten out of them by Carl Froch or Mikkel Kessler....guys Ward dismantled.

No' Ward really is many levels better than anyone GGG has stepped into the ring with as a pro. He's also bigger and stronger. If you think Ward is overrated with the opposition he's beaten to this point, I don't even know what to call you having your head up GGGs ass for beating C-level opponents.

Like I say everyone is entitled to an opinion. Not everyone though is a good judge of a boxer. If Ward beats GGG I'll give up watching boxing. Just ain't gonna happen regardless of reasons / excuses.

As you've clearly proven you're a terrible judge of a boxer if you truly believe that GGG has fought anyone nearly as skilled, talented and strong as Ward.

I think he'd try and maul and fight on the inside so Sergey couldnt get off with his punches. One other thing i would say aswell though is that Ward is definietly faster on his feet and has quicker hand than Hopkins at this point. He can box as a southpaw aswell something Hopkins doesnt do. It would still be a very hard fight for Ward though.
I don't see Ward successfully mauling Kovalev at all, at least not enough to upset his rhythm. Sergey showed a lot of patience last night. He was content to throw his shots, reset, cut off the ring, feint, and repeat. He has moves in there.
Whatever advantages Ward has over Kovalev are rendered ineffective by the fact that Kovalev WILL land his punches, and when he does it'll be the end for Ward. Ward's billygoat show wouldn't bother Kovalev, nor will he be able to employ his holding, pinning and plowing technique. Sergey can shorten his punches well, the way he turns over that left hand into a hook is a joy. He would be catching Ward on the side of his head if Andre wanted to make it a phonebooth affair.
I can't even think of what type of beast it will take to beat Sergey, probably a Roy Jones could have beaten him.
After he beats up a few more schmucks at 175 and maybe 190 I'd like to see him try heavyweight on for size more than I want to see him splatter Ward.

Let's not get this carried away ... Kovalev did what Dawson did, only with power.
Sergei did prove that he is more than just power. What really impressed me was the speed of his counter right hand. It's also very short too. However, I'd still like to see him in with someone who is very strong too.
Unfortunately, it seems like only Adonis Stevenson (and maybe the guy who crushed Cloud too) can match Kovalev's strength, and I don't see that fight happening until at least this time next year.
