I remember watching the first fight which your Pat won on a cut - he was a very tough guy himself - for the Commonwealth lightweight title if I remember rightly - it was on TV.

From sheffield and first fight live I saw was bramall la when Herol turned lindell Holmes over, millsy got his jaw wiliest and I think it was that show that Brian Anderson got starched in a round by prince Rodney? Ironically enough tho it was bombers arch rival at the time Sibbo who got me hooked, I had a casual interest and then local news started beating the drum for Herol n Sibbo and they showed Tonys job on salvemeni, minter and a few others...wow! I was hooked. 1st TV fight I remember mi mam,who had never watched a fight before sitting down with me on a Saturday afternoon to see what all this "boxing silliness" was about. It took me another 3 week before she'd let me near the gym again after we sat through 11 rounds of domestic savagery that was Kelly v Petrou

Barry McGuigan, I was a lad in Belfast when he started out. The impact he had was unbelievable and the excitement around his fights was something else. I used to think all the top fighters were like him and banged almost everybody out, I had a lot to learn in those days. I still remember looking at Terry Marsh's knockout ratio and thinking - hmmm, interesting...

Seriously Palooka I was driving home one day and it was on my car radio that John Candy had died. I had to pull over. Again I think the news of Diana's death was a Sunday morning. I walked to work and the streets were silent, it was so eerie that morning.

I was curious, so did another search. There is a full version in colour, from Italian TV, that surfaced after the bw copy that did the rounds.

They didn't show the fight on tv because of the advertising on Minter's shorts? Thats a shithouse trick.

I remember back in 1987, staying up half the night to watch Tom Collins fight Alex Blanchard for the EBU title - Blanchard was well rated at the time as a contender for the world title and could Collins do it? So, after all the football, ice skating, snooker and everything else, Nick Owen goes 'and finally, as for the Tom Collins fight against Alex Blanchard, well, Blanchard came into the ring with a load of advertising on his shorts so we can't show the fight but here is a picture of Tom knocking out Blanchard in the second round to win the European title'

Probably Hatton in terms of British fighter but Bernard Dunne would be the real answer given I started properly following boxing around the time of his European title reign and he got serious coverage in Ireland also.
