You mentioned that you'd typically score the round 10-8 whereas I'd score it 10-9, and hence it seems like in some respect we're thinking differently about the round and how it should be scored.
Yeah, I do think 10-8 would be correct the majority of the time. But like I said, there are certainly instances in which 10-9 would be the better score.

i am sure what i am writing is not in the rules, but
reflects reality.
the first knockdown in a round basically accounts
for 2 points. the other guy really has to clearly
win the rest of the round to turn it into a 9:10
score instead of 8:10. further knock downs count
for 1 point.
having said that, the two points you get practically
immediately with scoring a knock down, seem
somewhat special. you get them even if you don't
dominate the round, but you don't get a third one
easily, even if you do dominate. from what i have
seen this seems to be the reality of scoring.
so in the case here, the first knock down turns the
round into 1o:8 and the other ones cancel each other
out. reality is, if this was a decisive round and scored
differently by different judges there would be ...
controversy.

See
http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=186170 for a fairly full debate on the exact same question a while back in the British and Irish section, if it helps. Under British rules, there is no such thing as an "automatic 10-8 round" (regardless of what commentators etc may say), and the principles of how you score a round are contained in the BBBofC Referee's Guide, not the BBBofC Regulations themselves. I've never seen anything for other jurisdictions that specifies an automatic 10-8 round either, but would be interested if someone has a link to rules referring to that. Plus where anyone is referring to "the rules", it's worth specifying the rules you are referring to, as there are so many different sets of rules in different states and different countries across the world.
Hope that is of some use.

I think it is quite simple. KD itself is worth only one point, but it also very strongly indicates (almost defines) who is the winner of the fight. IMO too strongly, but anyway.
So that is why the first KD is in practice worth 2 points - first for making it 10:9 round (no matter what happened before/after) and second as KD... good example is Tyson flooring Douglas in the final seconds of the round, and still getting it 10:8 on all three scorecards - despite being close to punching bag during the first 2'30''.
