Not seen that much of Smith before, but tonight he reminded me a bit of the Macklin that fought Sturm: heart, work rate, determination, switching between body and head, but not all that crisp. I felt that hurt Macklin in the end at the very top. Still a really good career though, EBU champ, multiple title challenger, etc.handsofstone wrote:I think he's got good technique, especially the body shots and uppercutsJ-C wrote:Right now looks as though Liam Smith might turn out to be a Macklin sort of fighter. He's tough and fit, hard to beat, but his punch technique isn't brilliant.

i have no clue whats gone on here with this fight...abril is no longer wba champ??..he's in recess ??.

I'm expecting lots of blood tonight in the main event
Re: Matthews vs Luis Discussion Thread
Abril made 2 defences in 2 years, pulled out of at least 4, the last 2 within 2 weeks of the fight. He's now been made champion in recess by the WBA if he returns in the next 6 months he gets a fight against Perez, who has been made full champion, if he doesn't then he's at the back of the queue again. Derry is now fighting for the vacant title.doug.ie wrote:i have no clue whats gone on here with this fight...abril is no longer wba champ??..he's in recess ??.

I like Tony Luis a lot listening to him. He called a spade a spade.

Yeah, both in the last 24 months as well, strangely he seemed to curse opponents as rescheduled dates with both were cancelled when they got injured and then of course Crolla suffered his nasty incident. Watch Derry break his leg after 2 rounds in some freak incident...doug.ie wrote:and they were both voluntaries ?Boxing Prospect wrote:

Re: Matthews vs Luis Discussion Thread
dirty derry is like a cat...on about the 4th of his 9 lives
Re: Matthews vs Luis Discussion Thread
Luis seems to be punching short a lot.
Re: Matthews vs Luis Discussion Thread
Uppercut working well for Derry as Luis is coming in.

So far so good after the 3rd, Luis seemed to come into it a bit more towards the end of the round, but Derry up so far. Needs to keep to his long range boxing though not get dragged in

Think Luis just shaded the 4th, bit more workrate and more spoiling from Derry. But very close

Much better by Derry in the 5th, boxed , moved and picked his punches well, stayed off the ropes.
Luis is tough and just keeps coming forward, the final 3rd of this fight is going to be great , if it gets that far

Bodyshots look key for Luis
Re: Matthews vs Luis Discussion Thread
The Luis from his last fight turned up there.
This is getting more interesting as it goes on.

Derry just takes the 6th with better accuracy , landed some good uppercuts early on. Luis come back near the end of the round lands a couple of cracking body shots as Derry is against the ropes
